Types of Damage Mitigation

deleted220103-006055
Can anyone confirm that offensive abilities that take Stamina to cast and whose overall damage is calculated from Weapon damage + Max Stamina are mitigated by the enemy's Physical Resistance, and

abilities that take Magicka to cast and are calculated from Spell damage + Max Magicka are mitigated by the enemy's Spell Resistance?

This is regardless of the type of damage (Physical, Flame, Magic, ...). Thanks.

I just did a few tests and it seems as if you are correct. The only skill I found that scales off stamina+weapon damage and is mitigated by spell resist is relentless focus.

What this means is that Physical damage and Physical Resistance have nothing to do with each other. The former is just a type of damage, increased for example by the Ritual > Mighty star. The latter, Physical Resistance, does not mitigate Physical damage but rather all damage coming from Weapon / Stamina.

If a Physical damage comes from Weapon, it is lowered by Physical Resistance; if it comes from Spell, it is lowered by Spell Resistance.

So, "Physical" is equivocal and has two entirely separate meanings.

For example, there are 2 taunts in the game: Pierce Armor (Puncture morph) and Inner Beast (Inner Fire morph).

Pierce Armor does Melee Physical damage.

Inner Beast does Ranged Magic damage. (There may be no difference in kind between melee and ranged, merely difference in degree in the "Range" of abilities.)

Yet since both scale off Weapon damage and Max Stamina, both are presumably mitigated by the enemy's Physical Resistance.

The morph Inner beast does physical damage not magic damage. Inner Rage does Magic but also scales of magic just like the unmorphed version Inner Fire.

Ok, yes, they must have changed it not so long ago; I was looking at

    http://elderscrollsonline.wiki.fextralife.com/Guild+Skills

which must have outdated info. Still, even if the example is no longer as interesting, the point remains.

We can use DK's Burning Breath for illustration which does Ranged Flame damage.

Or, conversely, Burning Talons and Stone Fist do Magicka-based Physical damage which according to our theory must be mitigated by Spell Resistance.
