But seriously, researching would make sense if not proper decon to get the mats back. A good chef or (al)chemist should be able to figure out some ingredients and learn from that

Well, I did suggest the other day that they add a (rare) new buff called either Witchcraft or Transmutation, which would allow any potion to grant ultimate when consumed. Would that work?

Because blacksmithing, clothing, and woodworking consist of both chemical and physical changes (thus some but not total reclaim of material when you decon), whereas provisioning and alchemy are purely chemical changes.

Suuuuuure. Unscramble the eggs from that omlet back into... eggs? Extracting that groud paste from that potion back into a flower? Yeah, right.
Even figuring out ingredients would be nigh impossible in alchemy. How -would- you want to figure out what flower was an ingredient in some potion? Especialyl after it was crushed, dried, steamed in water, distilled or whatever...

The only one that might make sense is figuring out some ingredients from a dish. Though that generally wouldn't take deconstructing it, but... eating it. And isn't gonna tell you the whole recipe... or do you know someone who can figure out in what order the ingredients need to be put together and how long they need to be cooked for an decent result?

So, basically... it makes perfect sense for me.

What does make less sense for me...
...is why there is no "eye of newt and hair of dog" among the alchemy ingredients... and why I can't bake a healing potion (or a damage health potion) into a cupcake... why my cooking herbs have no alchemical use whatsoever... why the potions I make aren't green or blue (for the three-ingredient kind) quality to tell them apart from looted ones... why there aren't different solvents for different potion types... why there aren't "alchemical grenades" that break on thrown (from quickslot) and create an AoE cloud... why I can't have both a food and a drink buff (they have been promising we would, someday...) why I can't buy some green recipes from some recipe vendor, or find them to learn in library books... why my bosmer can't get cooking ingredients from the sentient enemies she kills (meat mandate, anyone?)... why I can't give leftover meat to the roaming doggies or my characters vanity pets as treats...
    ...stuff like thart... ;)

You can't uncook food, unmix drinks, and seperate already mixed potions.
So no decon please, dosen't make sense, really xD
but maybe- deconstruction as a way to learn recipes?
a little taste test and, presto! I think I can make that myself now!

Also, about the Ult Pots- NO.
This is already a NB passive. Sure, it would be great to drink a pot and get some ult on a DK to pop that ult, get the nice resource regen + damage boost, don't get me wrong.
But having a NB who can just Incapacitating strike you (50 ult cost, + stun and 20% dmg boost) nuke you with SA spam while you're stunned, pop a potion, and do it AGAIN, immediately after your cc immunity wears off?
I can hear the cries of people in cyro trying to get zos to swing the nerf bat around already.
Ult pots already exist. just only for NB

Since we get decent Inspiration from making things in Alchemy and Provisioning, I never worried about it.

Cooking is not something you can reverse engineer, best you can do is taste the finished product that someone else made, and try to determine the ingredients that are in it. But until you make it several times your not going to determine how its made, what quantities the ingredients, what order the ingredients are cooked in or much else about the recipe other than a general idea of what to try.

As soon as someone can show me how to get corn out of my bottle of whiskey, then I will wonder why we can't break those down in the game.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

I've never wondered this, actually. It makes total sense that while we can deconstruct armor and weapons, we can't "deconstruct" food, drinks, or potions.

If I deconstruct a pair of blue jeans, I get denim, and maybe a zipper and a button, that I can use to make a backpack or something.

If I deconstruct Spaghetti, I still have spaghetti, though maybe in neat piles of ingredients rather than together as a whole dish.

That was something I mentioned back in comment #3. In any case it's fun to see people taking the suggestion seriously (and not so seriously).

You could unmixed drinks. It's called distillation. Potions or medicine as we call it can be reverse engineered. In all honesty we live in a game with horses made of fire, teleportation, shooting fire from our mouths and hands, summoning evil monsters and no one thinks this can't be done? It's like discrediting minute parts of star wars yet being a fan. This forum us getting stranger by the day.

I have to disagree. You can sometimes sort of tell what's in a recipe by tasting it, but not really. Flavors and aromas are complex and our senses cannot always tell them apart especially if they are combined. A good chef might be able to determine a unique flavor in a familiar dish and even guess as to what it might be, but they could also be way off the mark. I do think however that recipes should allow for experimentation; maybe similar to how alchemy works to make them better or alter their attributes. For more information about how our sense of taste works:
