Lets talk about chests...........the ones in game...........that you open.............to get loot and gear out of........... FOCUS people!

I spend half my time PVPing and the other half farming mats, cause' gear costs a bunch to upgrade. I have a nice area in Wrothgar which I farm and that area has some nice, ahem....chests in it.

Now, depending on when the chest spawns, it may be a simple lock, intermediate, advanced or master. I would assume that the level of lock would determine the quality of gear inside. As an aside, I think ive opened maybe 3 master chests since I started playing in beta. So it goes without saying that the master chests are found in limited quantity.

Why then, when I opened a master chest yesterday, I got two blue level "ancestor robe of the deconstruct" items and 116 gold out of it?

Is it bad RNG? Can anyone make me feel better and tell me about the epic level v16 set item they found so I don't get my hopes crushed...

no doesn't really matter which kind of lock there is on the chest. loot is still awefull.

Well,chests are pretty just the only way you can learn to pick locks if you dont want to get caught by the guards. What's in them isnt worth anything,unless you are running a brand new character.Then you get low level weapons and sometimes you get armor bits.You can get Malachite shards quite a bit too.Thing is,this way you can hone your skills with the lockpick.Oh,and you get XP for it in the Legerdemain line.

If you are new the game or new to a server, with no crafter, champion points, gold, etc, chests can be helpful at low levels. In Cyrodiil they may contain some useful items, especially if they are from dolmens. Otherwise, they are largely good for the chest unlocking achievements and increasing your legerdemain skill line.

I have a "route" that I take when I farm mats, because I have a thing about chests. I MUST find and open them! So I open on average about 30-ish chests in maybe a half hour?(as long as it's not to busy and they all are there when I get there)

I have noticed that it doesn't matter what level the chest is. The only difference is the timer. I have opened a Master that had a green level item and gold only, then right after I found a Simple that had a blue item and also a treasure map. I honestly can not remember opening a Master chest that had anything exciting it in.

To be honest, I have found Briarheart rings, maps, and other set pcs, more often in Simple & Intermediate than in advanced & master.
I'd say I find a Master once a day, Advanced, 3 or 4 a day, the rest are split between simple & inter.

It always bugged me when I get the master open only to find disappointment.

Have been playing since Beta and I didn't even know there were Master chests. I thought it stopped at Advanced.

You know, something like that
Treasure Map = Garbage Map
Treasure Chest = Garbage Chest
Undaunted Chest = pee-pee on your face chest
and so on. And that's the reason why loot is awful.

Aaah. It would be nice if there was something unique or even rare in those chests.I dumped all my treasure maps due to there being less goods worth anything in them than what is in the normal chests.

I have stopped seeing them as treasure chests and more so 1-2 deconstructable item chests with 100 gold to make you feel like you got something as you passed up a columbine

Got a laugh out of that. I gave up on farming briarheart. I have a 5 piece with jewelery but the rings have terrible traits and are v15 (why?). I cant make myself farm for a potentially infinite amount of time for a few drops on a set that I am not even convinced is viable for anything but grinding.

I really just open chests for the EXP.

the only time opening a chest is exciting is when you roll a noob, go your noob island right after the tutorial. You find a chest and open it and get a nice green or blue item you can use. Since your a noob its a mssive upgrade. This might happen once or twice more like before you reach level 10. After that you really get nothing good in chests at all.

Anyone every play EQ2 and rembemer the different style chests and even the master chest. That was some exciting sh*t to see what was going to be in there.

yeah, that's the thing....you run around and see a master chest and think, "oooooh! " then you open it and you say, "awwwww "

Chest loot is horrible. At "best" you'll get a piece of set gear and never higher than blue quality. Any set gear found in chests lower than v15 will be green quality. As a wonderful "bonus" all the endgame set loot you could get in chests in now bound. Yay!? They need to get someone to bring some fun to chest loot. It's like they were so worried about chest loot being overpowered that they just made it bland and boring then nerfed it a few times just to be sure.

Please correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't getting VR16 blue set gear (undaunted or otherwise) a good thing?

You can just turn it into purple and then blue via the improvement section of crafting stations...right?

Please advise if i'm being stupid, i'm still learning some of the high-level play mechanics and perspectives.

As for chests themselves, I usually just do the farming route in Orsinium. Have most of the new sets vr16 divines, just missing purple Briarheart jewellery. Pothole Caverns is quite nice for chests, aspect runes, heavy sack and XP farming. ^^

Got me beat. I did find a master chest at like level 15 and it took me forever to open it. Was really excited, FINALLY got it open and remember being disappointed.

Still open a chest when I see it because ocd.

I have gotten to the point of passing up all alchemy mats except columbine. Took forever.

Add this topic to the list of never-ending complaints that get rehashed in the forum. Like lag, BoP, RNG, etc.

There have been some great ideas for improving chests, but it must be a low priority for zos. But I still open every chest I find. They're a great source of soul gems and glyphs. They yield a little gold and XP. They are the only source of Malachite shards. They are perhaps more common in Wrothgar than ancester silk nodes, so are a good source of ancestor silk and other v15 mats from decon items. The glyphs are great for leveling enchanters.

As for improved loot from higher level chests, I got over that expectation long ago.

Oh I wholeheartedly agree, but the fact that i got a set piece from an Intermediate chest in Wrothgar at all is a whole lot of luck.
