Maybe a kill counter that only tracked kills to whomever did the most damage, but I think that would make even more lag.
Instead of adding a leaderboard based on killing blows, add a ranking system into the game. Then make people choose between unranked campaigns and ranked campaigns. Add a new quartermaster that sell exclusively sets of gear that requires different amount of ranking and that cost ALOT Of APs (50 to 100k per piece).
Optional : Bring faction points into the game. Faction points can be earned by capturing / defending objectives and scrolls. Make the leaderboard work with faction points instead of alliance points. Alliance points would remain in the game but they would be earned by landing killing blows. They would be used only to buy stuff from the quartermasters (sieges / gear / gems / etc).
Edit : Ranking would be earned with total Killing blows or Killing blows / Deaths ratio.

In this vein, i so love those tells from really terrible fotm sorcs that use this tactic to steal a killing blow (and did absolutely nothing else but run away from every engagement) and run their mouths.
Never ceases to amaze me just how idiotic people are.
I hang back and let my friends do all of the work, and then throw in an endless fury to steal the killing blow and *** them off. I can confirm that the kill goes to who got the killing blow and not who does the most damage.

Na it goes to who got the most damage. Many times I look at who killed me in the chat feed and it's different from the killing blow in death recap.
