Actually, the devs saw a video of a guy with 2,000 champion points solo a 12 man trial, and that was a big reason they put in the Champion Point cap and the catchup mechanic. They saw how incredibly imbalanced it was getting.
good stuff, make boss cast an unblockable or unresistable aoe to leech power from everyone around, so it gets stronger with more and stays soloable alone.

That's a problem with CP, not with trial content being easy.
After reading the title i was like "What the..." but after your explanation I really think this could be fun. Normally I consider myself as a group player and I'm not sure how EXACTLY the devs could do this (since a raid you could do completly solo would be boring as hell and you should say something like "The min group size is 4") but the more I think about this the more I actually like the idea.
I'm not sure about this particular idea but I really enjoy the solo content in Orsinium. By that I mean you can do it by your self if you want, but if you run into any other players with same goal, you can work together without even having to group.
I dont think that soloing trial is a good idea (because I prefer the mechanics that involve teamwork), but scaling it for smaller groups (4+ people) might be interesting.
Also I think that it would be great to have 1-2-3-4 players modes for both arenas (Maelstorm and Dragonstar).

I think the idea has merit in terms of splitting up the main group into smaller sub groups, like having one section of the dungeon that has 3 different paths that have to be taken and each path only allows 4 people in it at a time and ask have to be cleared to move on but with the majority of the dungeon still designed with 12 people in mind.
Something like that could be an interesting mechanic I suppose, but an entire trial where you split everyone? While I like soloing and the idea sounds fun in theory I simply don't think it would work very well in the end. This would put far more emphasis on the individual player and any given player can easily ruin a run even more easily than with 12 people. If one person isn't pulling their weight there isn't even the option for the rest of the group to pull their slack, it's just ruined because of that one person. If we allowed other players to go in and help them then what's the point? We've made a 12 room dungeon with no interesting mechanic that just requires them to be cleared. Better to do it on a smaller scale I'd say.
