Is this normal?

I bought the game the other day got it all downloaded and updated to be greeted with the message that the servers were going down for maintenance that ended up lasting almost 9 hours, Couldn't play all day managed to log in the next day played for a little bit and now I see the game is down yet again and has been for 10+ hours now....I mean i'm not gonna lie after the bleh beta experience and finally biting the bullet to give the game a chance im already regretting it I mean the game has been down for maintenance for almost as long as it has been playable in two days. Is maintenance normally this long / regular on a day to day basis?

I am also not meaning to sound whiny or anything as this is a legit concern and is currently heavily favoring telling my friends to simply pass this game by.

Nah not normal. But they definitely could have told us a week in advance it would be down this long for two days in a row.

they are upgrading the servers for the new dlc as far as i know.

This is the first time maintenance like this has happened since I started playing in June. I think it's pretty rare.

hopefully the upgrades will shorten those loading screens....lol.

Not normal. Signs point to something catastrophic happening at the server or data center level yesterday, that they were able to get in a temporary fix for to get the system up last night. The long term fix or replacement needed to go in today, and also ran into problems. Normal maintenance is a couple hours 2-3 times per month, with occasional, longer downtimes to load patches.

If he has just bought the game the loading screen he is use to is the current length. Until he has experienced a short loading screen he'll have no point of reference from which to be annoyed by the current length.

ouch sorry man bad timing. No this is not normal. Normal is couple hours a week downtime during the day (at least for U.S.)

No. Not normal at all.

Sure the servers are taken down for maintenance regularly, but this is a very long one. Hey, they're MegaServers, they need maintenance.

The warn you too! Of course they warn you about 10 seconds before they're going to do it, but they do warn you.

I wonder if the announce it on their twitter feed? If so, I really, really need to start following them.

Game has been out for 18 months, yet you think the last 2 days are representative of uptime?

You're just unlucky regarding the day you chose to start playing. Give it a few hours.

Yes, Zenimax has the power to foresee unforeseen circumstances a week in advance...

No OP, routine maintenance does not usually take this long. An issue with yesterday's maintenance has led to today's maintenance to upgrade their hardware so the issue never happens again. Please do not let it discourage you!

Probably a lot healthier than unrelenting pessimism. Most likely a chap people would rather be around as well.

No....if I thought that the last two days represented the game I would of either said *** it never posted this and just not tried to play or went 12 year old CoD player and made a three paragraph rant on how I want my money back cause this is a *** game....if you read im asking if this does represent the game or not and the clear conciseness is no...

You're considering telling your friends to avoid this game because it's down for maintenance? I'd suggest looking into the MMORPG genre & what it represents. This is completely normal for an MMORPG. Only recently FFXIV was down for over a day due to a hardware upgrade.

I understand that as a modern human-being we are incredibly impatient but please try to look at the bigger picture & not follow the crowd of moany fault finding individuals.

I decided to try the diner down the street from my house today because I had heard good things. To my surprise, when I got there, they were closed for renovations. Is this normal? I'm really leaning towards telling my friends and family to avoid this place when it re-opens due to it's closure today.

No, it's not normal, but it is necessary. The game is expanding so new server upgrades are a must. Hopefully it will make all our gaming experiences much more enjoyable. And hang in there, you're in for a treat!

So during the first maintenance for NA the EU servers went down so they had to stop maintenance and focus on getting EU back up, so they lost time and finishing the original maintenance today.

Also, this is an extended maintenance because they are upgrading the server hardware. So it's going to take a little longer than usual.

Again...hence the asking if this is normal....as the other day when I looked I seen nothing from them on how long it was going down for / times they thought it might be up then after it going up just seeing that it was coming down again that being my biggest issue being new coming into the game and have zero information to base anything off of.

So based on that current experience and if this was normal yes I was going to tell my friends to avoid the game as most of them have full time jobs / kids and play time is limited so something like 12hour+ maintenance times would be something that would inhibit there will to play a game...again that being here why I asked if it was normal

By the way OP ignore the salty naysayers on the forums. Most of them are kids that are unhappy that they don't get things done their way all the way just because Zenimax caters to the majority of the playerbase like any professional gamemaking company should.

It is not normal per se, but happens every so often for every MMO.

They did say they were not just doing server maintenace, but hardware upgrades... those always take longer. And they also mentioned they ran into some unforseen difficulties... that's why it takes two days now instead of one as they had originally planned.
But that's the way of the worlds, every so often, plans change because there are unforseen difficulties.

On the bright side, once they do finish, we shall have ESO again, with better servers. Might even be less lag (No, they cry, don't say this, don't jinx it! ). In any case, all the upgrades seem to be in preperation for orsinium, as has been mentioned...

Not normal. The devs have said that they try to avoid this as much as possible, but that it eventually needed to be done.
