EDIT: Moved to General Discussion.
I'm posting this under the crafting section because I'm suggesting a greater integration of fishing with crafting in a full overhaul. I actually submitted this idea as /feedback a couple of weeks ago but I figured it would help push this if more players comment on it.
I've been chasing the fishing achievements for the past few months on my main character and frankly, I find it's one of the more time-consuming, less rewarding and plain boring things to do in-game. For that reason I'm suggesting a revamp with the following points:
- As it is, regular fishing bait yields the same results as using the much rarer "fished" bait (Fish Roe, Chub, Shad and Minnow). I propose giving the latter an increased chance of obtaining rare fish. Maybe make it green to denote the difference in quality?
- Fishing is now integrated with provisioning by providing the rare drop [Perfect Roe]; I propose integration with alchemy as well by providing a drop like say... [Slaughterfish Scales], bringing back an iconic alchemical ingredient present in ES lore since Morrowind. Maybe make it obtainable as a rare drop when filleting slaughterfish specifically. This would bring a lot more attention to the neglected Lake Rumare and would empower Tamriel's fishermen in the trading market.
- I propose you make rare fish fillet-able, with a substantially increased drop chance for the aforementioned ingredients. It would already be a balanced tradeoff, considering their gold value. This would allow dedicated fishermen to obtain greater reward for their time.
- There seems to be a disparity between many of the game systems where it comes to colour coding. What I mean by this is: we have fine, superior, epic and legendary qualities for many things in-game, but fish only go up to superior. (This is also the case with provisioning ingredients, where superior quality is absent altogether, and alchemical solvents and reagents and potions, where everything is white EDIT: or green. But I'll leave that for another post.) I propose the addition of one epic fish per region or per alliance home regions. Also, one super rare legendary fish... maybe call it [Giant Slaughterfish] (Bravil Wizard's Grotto, anyone? ) fishable only in Lake Rumare or the IC? You could integrate these into existing achievements or come up with new ones specifically for them. This will of course add another layer of difficulty for the coveted Master Angler achievement and would undoubtedly add a lot more grinding time, which brings me to the next point:
- I propose the addition of a Fishing skill line under the World category. The purpose of this would be to reward players who are actively seeking these achievements with incremental benefits for their time and dedication to it. It would also reward crafters, specifically alchemists and provisioners, who seek the ultra rare ingredients or tradesmen seeking these ingredients solely for profit. The following is a list of suggested passives for this skill line:
- Increased yield from fishing holes. Most of the annoyance in fishing comes not from fishing itself but from looking for the appropriate holes to fish out of; this passive would be designed to help mitigate that, allowing fishermen to fish say... 2/3/5 more fish out of a single hole. Stackable with other players optional.
- Increased chance to obtain rare fish. This is pretty self-explanatory.
- Increased chance to obtain rare fish when using specialty bait (the above mentioned "fished" bait). This is an alternate option to the previous point.
- Increased chance to obtain rare ingredients when filleting fish. Or only perfect roe if you decide to scrap the slaughterfish scales.
- Decreased cast/wait times when fishing. For the impatient folks out there! More experienced fishermen in real life can often cast in ideal spots, shortening the wait for a catch substantially, so this is not too rl lore-breaking either.
- Increased XP from fishing. Allow players to gain XP through fishing! This would make the activity more consistent with other things we can do in Tamriel, and help mitigate that notion of "wasted time" many players regard fishing with.
So those are just a few suggestions for passives. As a side note: many of the rare fish currently in-game are not all that hard to catch at all, so obviously I would suggest balancing these passives with overall drop rate.
- As a last point, and in the event you decide to go with this and it happens to lineup with your upcoming housing DLC, give us Fishing trophies!!! Allow certain fish to have a rare drop that we can turn into housing decoration items. You could also integrate it into achievements where a group of fish would yield a housing trophy displaying the different fish on your house wall. They have this system in The Lord of the Rings Online® and it is amazing! I would suggest you look at theirs for pointers. That said, I WANT A GIANT SLAUGHTERFISH ON MY WALL! O_O
Overall this revamp would create a renewed interest in fishing in Tamriel and would help boost the economy by providing more sought-after ingredients or a better value for existing ones. It's brilliant that we can finally fish in an elder scrolls game without a bow, sword or spell
but I think there's still much that can be implemented and expanded over the current system. Thanks for the read!
