So, I decided to be an Angler...

Many moons ago (roughly 2 moons) I decided to go for that rarest of titles, even rarer than Emperor, that would allow me to (perhaps) have the odd "kowtow" emote directed at me: Master Angler.

My guildies thought I was mad, My GF ( a V6 NB) thought I was bonkers and I began to think, when it was obvious that I couldn't stop, that I was indeed insane!!

So I thought I would give it a crack and I am loving it!

So I have so far knocked out the following areas and caught all the fish:

Stros M'kai
Khenarthi's Roost
Bleakrock Isle
Craglorn
Coldharbour
Stonefalls
Deshaan
Eastmarch

Now I am on Shadowfen and then The Rift to finish off the Pact Fisherman trophy.

It's not for everyone because most people would find this to be sooooooo mind numbingly boring, not me though! I now have a HUGE stash of Perfect Roe, about 60 XP potions and more gunny sacks that I can poke a stick at so there are some good benefits from the supposedly tedious practice of fishing in ESO.

LASTLY! THANK YOU to @DarthRupert for his amazing website, dedicated to ESO fishing, that is just perfect! I tried many "googlings" and when I found his site I stopped the googles, I highly recommend it! Not sure if I can name it here (as per the rules on advertising) so I won't but if anyone wants it then send me a PM. Thank you Rupert, and thanks for putting your forum name on the site so I knew you were on here!!

I got my Master Angler a few months ago. I had it halfway completed when the recipe that uses perfect roe was announced.

Even though I was halfway there I still ended up with about 80 perfect roe for my Psyjic recipes.

That is the one HUGE bonus of fishing.

Got Craglorn but I am dreading IC, that one won't be easy but I will get it, just not on a populated server

Well for me it is, I have seen a couple dozen emperors (and emperesses) but (on PS4) I have not seen a single Master Angler, not one, so in my experience it certainly is rarer.

Please, I see 2-4 new emperors a day. Just depends on how long I play, 5 or 10 minutes...

I can't seem to get the last couple fish in every area... it's frustrating the hay outta me.

I may have some insight there but this is not yet proven, indeed I have not done any research either but I do suspect it to be the case.

I am finding that I seem to be getting more success with the secondary bait when fishing for rares. Right now I am using Minnow and I have got two greens in 5 minutes, the last fishing hole I did I got all 4 fish in 15 minutes using Roe.

It's purely speculative at the moment but I am exploring it. It makes sense, the secondary bait is harder to find so maybe it has a higher chance of rare fish??

it should be so, but i dont know,

when i done the MA, i wasted one time more than 200 Minnows for a single green fish,
a day later i just finished a whole Zone with normal baits within 30mins and not even more than 200 baits in sum

That has to be frustrating, wow. I have only starting using the secondary bait with regularity tonight so I have not experienced that thankfully. Up until today I have left it as a back up bait.

Oh yes it is. Former Emps are a dime a dozen due to Emp farming and people using friends and alt accounts to farm AP.

I have much more respect for a Master Angler. When you see one of those, you know they had patience, dedication and determination to get it.

Secondary bait, near as I can tell after lots of fishing and talking to others, doesn't give any better chance to catch rares. The biggest fishing factor is RNG. If you catch more rares using 2ndary bait, it's not the bait, it''s RNG. My advice is use the 2ndary bait first just to open bag space.

The best advice I can give, having been there, is be persistent and have a lot of bait. If you can fish in a group, you do have a better chance of catching rares. But with Perfect Roe added to the game, catching white fish is not a bad thing. My experience is that RNG is streaky...that is, if it's bad it stays bad for whatever you're doing. Go do something different for a bit, and try later. That gives RNG a chance to flip from bad to good.

IC fishing is not that bad. I got all the fish in just a few forays. FYI, you can be in sneak mode while fishing, coming out only briefly when you cast. Getting to the fishing holes is a bit tricky....hint-use invisibility potions.

DarthRupert's website is the best resource I've seen for fishing. I always throw his link when people have fishing questions.

I don't expect it to be too hard. Enemy players will be laughing too hard at the notion that someone is fishing and will leave you alone. Or maybe they'll join you? :-P

There seems to always be that one elusive fish that takes forever. For me, the Midget Salmon in Alik'r and the Blue Monkfish in Auridon cost me several stacks of bait.

I've gone through 700+ worms trying to get the Pikeblenny in Deshaan. I took a break and went to Stros M'Kai then Bleakrock, getting each of the rare blues in the first hole. The RNG is very erratic in this game. Too erratic.

It would be neat to have a skill line for fishing. Even if it was simplistic. Something like this.

Catch 10 unique rare blues
Increase rare fish chance by 5%
Chance increased 5% during a thunderstorm

Catch 20 unique rare blues
Increase rare fish chance by 10%
Chance increased 5% in the morning hours

Achieve Master Angler
Filet a rare green gives a 25% chance of Perfect Roe
Filet a rare blue gives 100% chance of Perfect Roe

Yeah cheesy, but in real life fishing is a skill. You get better at it. There's always going to be luck involved though.

@Heathenpride thanks for the shoutout. Glad to hear it's getting used. Good luck out there with the rest of your fish! And don't worry too much about IC. I certainly won't tell you that players won't attack you while fishing...because they will...and likely in stealth. But try to stay close to the wall and I recommend zooming all the way out so you can see them long before they see you. I even had a "pug group" formed with players from every alliance at one point, and we communicated through emotes.

For anyone having trouble with the last fish or 2 in a zone, all I can really says is stick with it. Try to get some friends, guildies, or other anglers to join you; for some fun and better drop%. The RNG is strong with the fishing system and I've used any where from 1 to 1000 bait to catch a zones final fish.

Talking about the Secondary Bait, @Ourorboros pretty much said it (and I think their comment in the old post is what got me to test it). This is something that popped up due to a major lack of info during beta and at launch. Also I think the bug with the Stros M' Kai fish and Chub may have helped the theory grow. It was something I also believed at launch (because why would 2 bait options be implemented per water type?). It wasn't until I came back and started fishing again that I decided to actually test it. I still have doubts whether or not it is better, but I used around 1k of normal and special bait when I tested. And the resulting numbers were incredibly close; even when looking at margin of error for the RNG nature of the system.

If you are looking for that last fish, get people to join you, it will improve the odds.

Is this really that much of a big deal? I miss just a few DC zones to get the title and I don't feel any special maybe cuz I'm not.
Feels just like when somebody posted their quest/exploration achievements as they have done every single zone, dungeon and quest there is. I as a completionist consider these things a must-do, but it's rather honorable if a strict PvP player gets through all this.

Yesterday, my fisherman got those last two pesky blue fish in Deshaaan after days of trying and frustration. He then went on to complete Shadowfen. Now he's made a good start on Eastmarch. 7 more zones and he'll have the title!

Having trouble with Blue river fish in Rift (300 baits so far).. then about 1/2 done with Shadowfen for EP.

Maybe 1/2 the fish for AD picked up randomly so far.


Feel like i'm getting closer to the home stretch.

Shadowfen for me is being a nightmare, don't know why but it's slower that a wet week

Deshaan was like that for me. Those last two blue fish... arrgh, what a bugbear! Shadowfen I did in a way shorter time.

Good luck all, got the title some months ago. It is the only title I use since then.
