Should there be a filter on certain "famous" names from TES lore?

For me, at least, it is very immersion breaking seeing characters running around named Xxxxx Septim, Xxxxx Tharn, Xxxxxx Nerevar, Xxxxxx Whitestrake, etc. There already is a form of name filter in the game, you can't name your character with names like ***, ***, Gay, etc... Personally I think this should be extended to "famous" names from lore as well, such as the ones mentioned. Other games, such as LoTRO, do this...
What do others mean?

It's a game let people use the names they choose as long as they aren't sweary or some other kind of offensive.

I'd prefer not to see a Tiber Septim running around because if he gets to be emp at any point the game has to shut down but have no issues with someone calling themselves Gaius Septim of Ragnar Greymane... in some ways those are just lore friendly anyway...

I don't care if there ever is anyone else named Tiber Septim, because history will prove they are not THE Tiber Septim that became the 9th Aedra.

While I think there shouldn't be characters called Tiber Septim and such, sometimes a connection to a "famous" name is well thought-out and not just for the sake of sounding "cool". For example my character Divia Tharn is a minor member of the extended Tharn family with ideas above her station and a chip on her shoulder because "uncle" Abnur didn't even know who she was. I wouldn't want that kind of RP possibility taken away.

Only full names and only of major historical figures, e.g. Tiber Septim, Molag Bal or Vivec. I have no problem with re-using regular names, like those two clans you mentioned (both are unimportant in the grand scheme of things and might actually be a thousand years old, who knows) or noble names like Tharn. Abnur certainly has a large family, no harm in roleplaying one of its members. Heck, my guildmate created a character who looks exactly like Abnur and it's weirder than a re-used name could ever be. :P

Aren't famous canon characters (although famous is in the eyes of the beholder) already covered in the T&C? I'm sure I remember reading something in there about not choosing a name which is considered ZOS/Bethesda intellectual property. I'd imagine that would catch Tiber Septim, Vivec, Ulfric Stormcloak, etc.

That said, as someone with a potentially "iffy" character (named after a minor NPC in Oblivion) I'd rather they didn't start enforcing this over-zealously.

Too many Septims or Neverars would be a bad thing but banning Blackbriar or Battle-Born seems a bit overtop. They're just families with some political influence in 1 region a few centuries later. I'm sure they had ancestors. Ghanima's use of Tharn seems legitimate and creative to me. I have an Indarys. If you want to ban Battle-Born I expect you'd want to ban that too.

I agree with previous posters. As long as people aren't naming their characters after actual historical figures (e.g. Tiber Septim), who's to say that those with the last name Septim or Tharn aren't long lost family members or whatever. I personally went a little obscure and named my dunmer toon after Sul from the Infernal City books. I made my character the long lost great grandfather of Sul...or some such nonsense. Regardless, it's not hurting anyone. If you feel like lore-friendly names are too immersion breaking, then RP it like that person is an imposter. If they are of an opposing faction in pvp, kill them and state that you took down that imposter and made your faction a safer place to live.

I personally believe that utilizing a famous lineage in naming our characters helps to facilitate more immersive role playing which is ultimately a betterment for the community at large when groups of people can really dive into a giant world created for us. Regardless, don't let it get your panties in a wad. I'd be much more opposed to gamer tags like @lordrichter mentioned. They really should allow us to display our character names on console.

Because a lot of people always wanna control how people play, you can see them everywhere in game and on the forums.

Kinda sad really.

Let people play how they want, and name their chars Gerbil The Dovahkin if they want.

On Xbox I only see the user's gamertag, not their character names. Most of these are not very TES-ish.

That said, my main toon is an Imperial named Quentius Curio.

Some people like to name their characters that way. It is what it is. If it makes the game fun for them I'll give up a little bit of my immersion;)

P.S. I don't really think you're just a dumb Nord, but that option was too good to pass up.

Customer Support made me rename one of my characters (with the name of the god of all gods from Tolkien's universe) and told me it is forbidden to use a name from a movie, video game or any other license that ZOS does not own. Furthermore, I was asked to report any character with that kind of name. So I'd say in theory, it is already forbidden to have that kind of name in the game. In practice, it is not applied to everyone by ZOS customer support.

It would be nice to see lore friendly names only while adventuring in Tamriel!

But, it's risky to force players to name their character like it should be to fit the lore in a MMO. ZOS should display character's name along with PSN ID's/Gamertags on consoles to begin with. I'm kinda avoiding aiming anyone in the game for that reason, so immersion breaking to see coded names like : XxkIllEr_ElItE_22552xX... -.- Not even speakable when you have voice chat only to communicate.

As long as people can be "Buttmuncher3000" I will always prefer to see a RP'er choose to be a Battle-Born ancestor, even if it is Shaquille O'Battle-Born.

I agree. Someone who might be RP-ing as Clivia's distant country cousin JimBob Tharn makes more sense in Cyrodiil than several guys running around at the same time with various misspellings of Barack Obama's name, for example.

I mostly agree with this option, however as was mentioned, I'd rather vote for people to be able to use names of families, such as Tharn or Battle-Born. However I wouldn't like to see many names or their variations that come from one single lore character (Tiber Septim, Nerevar, Almalexia, once I saw a Templar called Sotha Sil - a bit over top)

While I do kinda understand your point, OP, I still think it's up to the players how to name their characters, though.

Two of my characters are "Demnevannis", and I always liked that name for some reason since I met Baladas Demnevanni back in Morrowind. Funny thing was when I was playing with one of them and met another player with the same lastname, turns out we've chosen it for the same reason

What annoys me is the fact that I play on PS4 and they don't let us change our names. EVER.
