Seriously? That's what bothers you? There are lots of things in the game that should be changed or fixed. I guarantee for 90%+ of the people playing this is a total non-issue. Why would you care if for a very short time after you load you see silhouettes before the textures load? How is it any more immersion-breaking than not being able to see the characters who are there until they suddenly appear?

    Yep. Non issue

I've played 100s of top graphics games, and many online games. None has done this.

Starting with lower res textures at immediate load, and then pop in the large textures is what is usually done.

I don't really think this is acceptable in a top tier game like ESO
    .
Which would help, if the delay was in the client's ability to load the textures...

But it's not. As I said earlier (regardless of whether people believe it or not), the vast majority of the delay is in the server being able to send the data to the client about what textures to display.
    cjthibs wrote: »
    Sure, which isn't the case.
If the server was too busy to respond, it would be more random as to who is affected.
I always hear the same folks talking about it.
Then the people complaining are the ones with slower internet connections, not the ones with worse hardware.

Between my wife and I, we play this game on 3 different systems, of various speeds. My main gaming PC is a monster, with the game loaded on an SSD. I have virtually no client-side load times. I still get the black silhouettes, on ALL the systems, for about the same amount of time, especially when my internet is being slow.

I also notice it more during peak game times, so ESO server latency is also a primary cause. Regardless, it's all in how long it takes the server to tell your client which textures to load. To repeat what I said before, unless your hardware is very slow, virtually all of the delay is in the data transfer between server and client. Your system is a negligible portion of it.

    {edited to fix some horrifying grammar}

Fair point, but this never happened prior to the patch.

The client could actually assume textures to load, instead of displaying blank male bodies. Right now it is simply doing that.

Or it could simply not show the character model there until it has that information (which is what it used to do). Character model pop in is better than black male shadow men that then pop into characters.

You can watch a black male shadow man pop into a Breton Female. That's just a crazy thing to have in this game.

It used to simply take longer to pop in character models. Way better.

Your immersion isnt thr most important thing in the game.

What is the most important thing in the game, to you?

It will differ to each person, for sure, but the game is clearly intended to be immersive, with its high end ish graphics and lack of UI clutter.

Immersion was clearly high on the developers' priority list, as well as being very much a solid marketing point of the product.

This is honestly not the kind of thing to quit the game over, but it is a non-trivial distraction and a step backward in the product.

It looks like some effect you would see in a pre-release version, not a final live version of a top tier game like ESO is, and I thought we were just getting past that feeling with ESO, no?

I find the random game crashes far more annoying than the "shadow people" on load. The graphics rendering or whatever it is happening is still shorter lived than having to log back in from the start screen because the crash booted me.

its a common approach., GW2 does a similar thing. you are entering a new zone, lots of player, finite bandwidth. Option 1, invisible people, Option 2 massive lag, Option 3 black placeholders while the textures etc are loaded.

The only thing that bothers me is I see anyone who is using a costume put it on. And, those who put on a costume that makes your character scream or cry out, I hear that too.

Otherwise, its the falling through the ground on most logins and landing somewhere else that are getting irksome.

Who really cares, they are there like 5 seconds.

I agree. But what is annoying is that you also cant interact with NPC's until they load... For me its mostly the banker when I am switching to my crafter. And he seems to take longer to load then it takes for the silhouettes to go away.

Did you also notice those black figures sometimes have a 2H axe or a staff at their feet, and they slide when they start moving? I really prefer not seeing that at all... and no it's not 5 seconds for me; I teleport to a town, black figures around wayshrine take 15+ seconds to load (while I'm still invisible, and sometimes at ground level), then I run through the town and meet more black figures, some riding on beasts. So thank you @Riko_Futatabi for the tip.

Go to UserSettings.txt and SET PlayerStandInsEnabled.2 "0" - The default is "1", setting to "0" should remove them.

There is also an option to SET PlayerStandInsMaxPerFrame "8" - I have left this at its default of "8" since I've disabled the "PlayerStandIns"(as shown above) so perhaps this value has no effect, but I'm not certain on this.

Where might I find these files you speak of? :D

Yes, this was an intended change. It's in the patch notes, OP.

The game takes time to load player textures, there will always be some delay regardless of how fast your computer and Internet connection are. ZOS opted to have those loading textures be represented visually by a black silhouette instead of being completely invisible.

It makes sense for PvP areas like Imperial city when there are often enemy players waiting for you on the other side of a door, or at the bottom of a sewer ladder. As for immersion... well, it's no less immersive than having players appearing out of thin air.

While I agree, it's also to reduce the huge loading times. IC is a tiny subsection of zones the size of a small town, so 80% of the time your in a loading screen.

I'm just looking at this as another aspect of being a vestige... I see the souls around me when others do not.
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.
    ***
Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis
