Extra skill slot

Has there been any discussion into adding a 3rd bar or allowing a 6th skill to the hot bar? Just curious.

Not necessary. I did suggest adding a single dedicated toggle slot but there really aren't enough toggles for that. They won't be changing it.

Pressing left on the dpad one additional time?

I get why its not entirely necessary from my dps character, but from my healer/support character I feel like if I had just one more skill....lol

Well, a third skill bar is called, "being a sorcerer or werewolf," a fourth is "being both."

Yes, and a Light Armor one, please, so Medium/Heavy users could complain at the forums.

The 5th slot could be designed in a way to keep toggles active on both bars. Right now toggles just take up too much space which makes combat and builds (mainly pve) a lot less interesting and complex. Also pve sorcs have a lot less build options because so many skills are toggles and need to be slotted on both bars if you want to use them. For example, if you would choose a pet build you would use 2x pets, daedric prey, empowered ward and storm atronach. Thats defines 6/10 skills and 1/2 ultimates, so basically 60% of your bars are pre-determined by a single play style choice.

Another solution could be to replace all toggles with long duration buffs (60-120 seconds) so they can be worked into the rotation instead of just sitting on both bars and without having an active purspose. For pets this wouldnt even be necessary imo because they toggle off when they're killed, giving an active use to the ability on your bar.

There is a 3rd bar. If you are a Sorcerer, the Overload Ultimate has its own bar (since it is also its own weapon). You can put your buffs on there, and some players do.

You realize the more skill slot bars you have the more you have to cycle right? And the more you have to cycle the longer it takes to execute your skills throughout your skill bars effectively. No 2 bars is fine as is. I'd rather use only 10 skills than be delayed to use any of them because I had to press a button 2+ times to get to the skill I wanted to use.

I'd rather use only 10 skills than be delayed to use any of them because I had to press a button 2+ times to get to the skill I wanted to use.

An example supporting this is Dark Souls 2. They increased the number of items which can be equipped to the right and left hands by 1, making the total 3. However, most players only use 2 because of the time it takes to cycle through 3. In a competitive environment, having to cycle through 1 extra item is a bigger disadvantage than it seems. PC has an awkward solution to the dilemma by hotkeying each item slot to a different key on the keyboard, eliminating the need to cycle (e.g. Battlefield 4 hotkeys Primary Weapon to 1, Secondary Weapon to 2, Gadget 1 to 3, Gadget 2 to 4, and Knife to 5).

In regards to adding more skill slots or a 6th slot, that would destroy the build balance created by having 5 slots on each bar. Right now there is enough space to make a build that does what you want and can defend against some counters. Normally, one extra ability is required to be able to defend against all counters to your build. Having a 6th slot will allow room for that ability and therefore eliminate all weaknesses your build may have.

This is a nice thought but in practice it would make for many unkillable players.

Given how poorly bar swapping performs already ...

Although I suppose lag related performance issues do add some unpredictability to the game, without which most content would be even more of a cake walk than it is now.

Of course everyone WANTS an extra skill slot. We all have that perfect build that needs just such a thing. It's precisely for that reason we don't have it. Choices and sacrifices. We can all max every skill we want. The balance for that comes into effect in the form of a limited ability bar. I think 5+1 per bar works well and allows for diversity while making choices matter.

As to a third bar, I think that would just be clunky and introduce even more possibilities for performance issues in a game that already struggles with swapping two weapon sets.

The inferior race (aka consoles) don't have enough buttons to play with more than 5+1 quickbar slots. So doubt you'll ever see that.

A fixed buff slot would be nice though.

Just add a dedicated skill box that is only for a single toggle ability.

Skills on the quick slot is probably the best compromise. Limited effectiveness in PVP battles and fast-paced dungeons, but decent if you want to try out skills in slower PVE.

Adding a slot for a toggle ability would be an advantage for classes with class-based toggle skills (not all of them have them.) No thanks. The bars are really ok as is. If someone wants a toggle, make them pay for that convenience with skill slots.

Even if all classes had class-based toggle skills, adding a dedicated toggle slot would just ensure that every build used them, further encouraging a lack of build diversity.

A fixed buff slot would be nice though.

Console users already have to do multiple double key presses to activate certain skills. Ultimates, dodge roll, interrupt, synergies all require two buttons simultaneously. There are a few double press combos left over which would work, not that we need it, but it could happen. A toggle slot would be great, but then again, balance balance balance.

I think 5+1 is fine, it makes you think.

@namelessone, this is a topic that has come up many, many times, but unfortunately there is a very strong bias in these forums against adding another skill slot. You most definitely are not alone in wishing ZOS would add a 6th slot, or a slot for toggle skills, but that point of view gets "shouted" down here in the forums.

Personally, I wish there was one more slot, but am certain it will never happen.
  • namelessone
I like the one suggestion of having a set piece that adds one skill slot but I am assuming theyd make the previous bonuses not worthwhile. Why is there such disdain about it? After reading some points I can understand the negative response to a full bar, but why the animosity towards one additional slot?

    I'd say over 9000 actually.

If they gave us an extra one though we'd be able to whip up a number 6 on people.
