I think the light armor skill doesn't break stealth either..(dampen magic is the one I have) Could be wrong though.

Sorry for the ignorant question but this has always confused me..

When I cast Hardened Ward the little eye opens then closes again, indicating that casting HW makes me visible for a second. Is that really the case, or is it a glitch and I actually remain stealthed?

It just doesn't make sense that it should bring me out of stealth.

Thanks in advance for enlightenment. :-)

I am pretty sure Hardend Ward takes you out sneak from the moment you cast it, until the eye fully closes again. I have been caught marked and dropped because of this, I always try to hide behind something before casting.

Hey thanks! Hmm, I was afraid of that, lol. I will continue to try to hide behind stuff while casting it too. :-D

I tried to get the reasoning behind the different behaviours, and what I came up with is that everything that does not in itself have the possibility to cause damage and only influences yourself won't break stealth, with only one notable exception:

Vigor doesn't take you out of stealth, thus it is the only heal in game that can be casted stealthed.

As to some of the other buffs that may seem to fall out of that categorizing:
    • For hardened ward, it actually makes sense that you are taken out of stealth, since it will also affect your summoned pets. It is in line with other similar effects.
    • Buffs lilke molten weapons, expert hunter and similar will have their damaging component only active, if you actively cast another ability - which then takes you out of stealth.
    • Blade cloak (dual wield line) will cause reactive damage even if you do not do anything else - thus it takes you out of stealth.

Interesting, thank you. I can see the Hardened Ward thing if you have a pet out. But if you don't-- no reason you should get unstealthed.

While I agree with you on that, the current behaviour is consistent... the potential to affect is enough to take you out of stealth, exactly like mutagen, casted with no one around or any other heal.

Volatile armor does not take a DK out of stealth, even tho it is an AOE DOT(at least as long as you do not hit anyone with it), so there likely are more exceptions.

A tiny side note though, if you're using skills that don't break stealth in PvP while trying to hide from the enemy, if it's a skill that makes ANY noise, that noise can still be heard. EG: The light armour skill. It "jingles" or "tingles" while it's active. That can be heard even though you're in stealth. In fact, most noises you make while in stealth can in fact be heard. For that kind of reason, I make it a point never to cast anything, buff myself, joke around with light/heavy attacking against allies, etc while in stealth because it can all be heard.

Dammit, good catch... I thought that I tested all abilities but I seem to have overlooked that one.

Since the base ability is single target without the damaging component, maybe it depends on base ability behaviour only?

Nonetheless, @ZOS_GinaBruno , could you get Eric and his team to look at this? There should be some kind of consistency in this functionality.

Both of those don't ever directly affect someone other than yourself, so they are in line with my initial guestimation.

    EDIT to add:

Another good catch. Considering we manage to sneak up on others by crouching, it is only fitting to assume that we can control our smacking to a level that will not allow detection.
