What is the purpose of Sword & Board ? A Tank ?

hrothbern
hrothbern
✭✭✭✭✭
Indeed !
The whole purpose of S&B is a role with high damage mitigation from blocking and low DPS from the available abilities

Edited as addition:
IF ZOS nerfs the role of a Tank because of PVP abuse of S&B, they nerf an archetype role:

A Tank: Heavy Armor with Sword & Board

That should not happen !

"I still do not understand why I followed the advice of Captain Rana to bring the villagers of Bleakrock into safety. We should have fought for our village and not have backed down, with our tail between our legs.
Now my home village is in shambles, the houses burning, the invaders feasting.
I swear every day to Shor that after Molag Bal has been defeated, I will hunt down the invaders and restore peace in Bleakrock and drink my mead with my friends at the market place".

Try to explain that to people who state in official patch notes of PTS that they see tank type characters as someone who is supposed to have low health and do damage

    "Monsters

Mages, skirmishers, and tanks have all been tweaked to have less dramatic variation. In general, mages will have less damage and more health, while tanks will have less health and more damage."

The fact that people who think that way, decide what is "good" and what is "bad" for tanks and ignore feedback because "we dont know what is good for us" is terrifying.

You must have been playing the WRONG game if that is what you thought lol venture into pvp once and see that almost all of the pvp players are using sword and shield. The only people who dont are A) Those who refuse to conform to what the meta is B ) Those who do not know any better.

The better question is why do they still want to give the spell damage benefit to melee weapons......that makes ZERO sense

I think they meant that as compared to their current values not compared relative to each other.

Maybe, maybe not. It would be nice if they would clarify a lot of things, especially when they suddenly make changes that go against PVE tanks who actually do tanking in game.
Explain what in their mind tank is supposed to do.
Explain the true reasons behind stamina nerf.

It's this. This thead is a non-issue. That change isn't saying mages are suddenly going to have more health and do less damage than tanks. It was just a relative change to compress the differences.

Well this has gone for a long time and one shouldn't expect for better. I personally stooped caring and have been unable to take combat changes seriously in this game since that hilarious ESO live where they announced dynamic ultimate generation removal and the buff system. Anything after that was just downhill. I learned to enjoy it.

Now the fun is seeing how they will make this game more "fun" by ruining everything in it.

the reason a lot of builds use sword and board is because they focus on class skills and thus the weapons become just "slots" thus you want to use a 2 slot set, that leaves either dual wield and sword and board, unless you are going for a specific set (stygian) dual wield gives no good passives, where as sword and board not only has better passives it grants you some passive armor.

builds that use sword and board passively are things like casters that don't need a staff, or stamina that has built in class damage, etc.

Please reread this section. They are referring to enemy mobs (npcs) and not player characters. This was, I believe, to somewhat even out the difficulty/grindability of pve encounters.

Of course, I may have missed out on some attempt at humor, but it's quite clear to me that this statement has nothing to do with their view on player roles and simply on making monsters somewhat more homogeneous.

Yes im fully aware they are referring to enemy mobs, but with complete lack of communication from ZOS side regarding the "stamina regen issue" and "how they see future of tanks" we have no idea what happens in heads of ZOS designers, the thing they wrote about "enemy mobs", they both may and may not think the same way about player tanks.
Unless ZOS will come out from behind curtain and finally start communicating, we will have peculiar situation of "Schroedinger tanks".

You get another set piece slot and a slot for a major armor enchant. This alone make Sword & Board so strong and attractive.

I know it's possible to tank without using sword & board (as long as you use Inner Fire or a morph - if you're not using S&B and you're not using Inner Fire then you're simply not tanking, because you need to be able to taunt if you want to tank), but oh man are you ever making things tougher on yourself by doing so. Without using S&B you're missing out on a 38% reduction in the cost of blocking, a 28% increase in the amount of damage you can block, an additional 15% increase in the amount of ranged/projectile damage you can block, a 100% increase in the damage of your bashes, and a 40% reduction in the cost of bashing. Those all make such a big difference to a tank. And all of that's without even activating any of the active skills in the skill line...

More challenging definitely... If you don't find the current vet dungeons & trials to be enough of a challenge to your tanking abilities and you want that extra challenge, I say more power to you. I couldn't tank effectively without sword & board, but if you can pull it off why not do it?

Now that blocking is dead, why can't Sword & Board have some DPS skills?

It really bugs me that NPCs have Power Bashes that hit for 20K, while MY Power Bash only does about 4000 or something. If blocking is now pointless as a "meta", we should have some high damage abilities that we can use to build a new meta.

@ZOS_RichLambert, can we have a /lurk on this?

I remember when they nerfed bashing a few months after launch. My DK S&B stamina tank died a bunch in PvE when that went into effect.
