The former Emperor had no clothes, literally

I was on the PTS the other day in the IC and ran across an Aldmeri Dominion former Emperor (DK, Vampire). I could see his/her tag, but nothing else. His body/character didn't render at all for me, it was just a blank with a floating gamertag. No health bar even. He killed my buddy with chains/batswarm. His attacks rendered, but he/she didn't. We proceeded to "go at it" (and go at it I mean I stared dumbly at him/her in confusion, kept my buffs up, kept some distance while he/she tried to lock me up in talons a few times and batswarmed me twice or so). I had no idea if my very few attacks were even hitting because they vanished, I assume it was the spell resist but, again, there was nothing there. I saw a resto-staff attack from them once, and maybe a fire attack. It was mostly just talons, batswarm, talons (back up, back up) though. Hard to judge distance against a floating nametag.
1) I'm pretty sure it wasn't mist form. Though I saw them use it, kinda cause it rendered around their nothingness. It was like dealing with a player in stealth, where they leave stealth and they're suddenly visible except they never did. I saw another player using mist form later to get close to me, and it was recognizable. This was a blank/did not render/completely invisible.
2) I'm pretty sure it wasn't an invisible pot or some other kind of invisibility that lets them continuously attack while invisible. This went on for at least a few minutes and wasn't broken even after they had the sweeper boss start chasing them after I died. (My atronauch may have aggroed it, I dunno.) It was the full time this "duel" was ongoing. It did not break once.

Now, this was my 4th/5th time in PvP total so there might be something I'm missing. If it was legal, then fine (why?). Could someone tell me the counter? If not...
I wish I'd gotten their name and I wish I took screenshots. I'll remember next time. Has anyone else encountered this?
