Console: Why create a name for my characters when only my Gamer Tag is displayed to other players?

codybrewer78b14_ESO
I took the time to carefully think and research names for each of my characters that are interesting and accurate to Elder Scrolls lore. Then someone took a screenshot of my character and sent it to me and I realized it is my PSN Gamer Tag that is displayed to everyone when I walk around! Why is that? Here I thought everyone that played on console was just not creative and had all these dumb names, turns out it's their Gamer Tags being displayed. It is not this way on PC. When you name your character, that is the name displayed to others when you are logged on to that character. This is especially frustrating when I log on to my female characters and my Gamer Tag is very masculine. What is going on Zenimax?!

I think this is a load of hooey.
MS lets players use character names in other MMOs that use their systems.

I think ZOS just didn't have the time, patience, or skill to "do it correctly".
And, I hope they do fix this sooner, rather than later.

I'm thankful that I don't play ESO on console. Although, I do find that displaying a person's gamer tag instead of character name quite interesting. It says a lot, and explains a lot about the behaviors that console players are being subjected to when you see players that have gamer tags like XxX420BlazeIt4LyfeYoloSwagLulzXxX.

What I want to know is this:
Why do I constantly get "Name is already in use" when creating my characters, when that name is never even shown? If we're not going to see character names, why even bother with them, or with restricting them because someone else is using it for their character?

On consoles, I believe your actual character name is shown on items that you craft. That's probably the reason for the character name in use message.

Because on PC you see other players' character names, not their account ID. This is true when you're looking at them and when they're talking in zone or group channels. You can see either their character name OR their account name in tells, depending on how you started the conversation.

Conversation in guild channels is by account name.

So, unless someone's on your contact list or in a guild with you, you may never see their account name in game on PC.

Just more of ZOS' idiocy, they've been doing stupid crap like this since the game launched on PC.

On consoles, I believe your actual character name is shown on items that you craft. That's probably the reason for the character name in use message.

It's also shown below your account name in the guild roster, and I believe in the group interface.

Which begs the question: why not just frakking display our character names over our heads instead of our account names?

Can't be a MS issue...you know, 'cause this happens when playing on the PS4 as well ;)

It is a pretty asinine decision really...it was a bit jarring coming from DCUO where character names are displayed to ESO where gamer tags are.

Although given some of the DUCO character names, it wasn't too jarring.

There *could* be an argument about needing gamer tags to identify players even when they're on alts...but really, just add something like the DCUO inspect function - I can inspect anybody in range and view their equipped gear and such, as well as their PSN.

It's the biggest complaint I have with the game. My gamer tag is the same name as one of my alts and fits in with the fantasy theme, but looking at other players gamer tags is a huge turn off for me. What are you supposed to call these people over voice when their names are xXBig_Ballz99Xx or Dkieinf333?

You give people way too much credit if you don't think you will be seeing xxMaximusx123 all over the place either. I mean after the 15th Leonidas you have in your guild, how do start distinguishing them? You are Leo1, you are leo2, you are leo4 and as you rank higher in the guild ur number gets lower

I feel I echo many of the opinions in this thread. Personally I am also disappointed with the lack of character name visibility over that of the gamer tag. Specific toon names seem to be used in crafting along with the pledge of Mara, so I do not see a specific issue with just using the toon name if they are used for other things within the game.

All and all it is probably my only "complaint" with this game so far (sure there are things I would love to see added, but that certainly is not an issue with the current game itself as it stands).

Please consider adding this feature even if it is a toggle option or something to see gamer tags or toon names.

I thought the same of PC, but was positively surprised to see so many people with lore friendly names. I really want character names to be displayed...

I wanted to circle back to this, as the subject has been quietly dropped by ZOS:
Character names are currently displayed on all leaderboards instead of the appropriate PSN Online ID or Xbox Live gamertag.

Since this is a simple change, there could be one of two reasons for them to not have done it:

    1. It is too low in priority to rate an immediate fix
    2. They may be re-evaluating what they want to do

Maybe..maybe they can show both! Then you can make a character named House. Your title could look like this:

    Maxwell
    House
    Tyro
    Master Wizard

Better yet they include guild names. Make your own guild named Coffee:

    Maxwell
    House
    Coffee
    Tyro
    Master Wizard
