Non combat quests

I dunno about everyone else but when it comes to questing i prefer lots of different things to do in them. Not always fight your way to here and get this or kill that. Two of my favorite quests in mmos were from everquest 2 a long long time ago. Not because they were anything amazing but because they were different. One was to go into the basement of this house and clean it up. Move stuff around put the stuff in the room in the right place where it belonged. I know it sounds dull but it was such a nice change of pace and it was still worth xp and stuff. Then another was to go across town to a bar and kick the bartender in the crotch. I thought that was funny as hell.

So this game has tons of chances and places to do this kind of thing. Why not have a quest to round up a farmers cows and walk them back into the fenced in area. And the reward is a vanity pet cow! Or quests to go hunting with a special quest bow for deer or something. Deer that are hard to hit.

Even really simple stuff like a repeatable quest you can do every so often to help different farmers pick whatever they grow. With the rewards being a random recipe that use what you picked and a small portion of whatever it was you picked. Like here you picked lots of apples heres a recipe for apple pie or whatever.

How about a quest working in a stable or a horse farm cleaning up the stable or feeding horses with a reward of an extra few points of horse stats.

Maybe one to help clear some trees for a farmer to expand his field. Go out cut down the trees and you get to keep the wood. After that the farm should have a repeatable farm quest of some sort. Something to give you provisioning supplies.

But all of these types of quests shouldnt be just click the arrow. It should be stuff that makes you think a bit. Like you enter the stable and you know you are supposed to clean it out but no idea how. So you look around and see a shovel you pick it up and put it in your weapon slot then use the light or heavy attacks to shovel up manure and push it into a pile with light attacks then heavy attacks to lift up and put into a wheel barrel or something. then you find the pitchfork and use it to spread fresh straw in the stable.

Have to get cows back in the fenced in area? cant just click them and tell them to follow you. Have to get around behind them and chase them into the right area. More mini games then just simple quests.

Then how about bar games. Play darts have drinking contests whatever. Just more fluff quests that add to immersion.

One of my favorite things about the single player elder scrolls games were the thieves guild quests where you had to sneak around and steal stuff from the homes of the npcs while they slept or whatever. No combat but still fun. Or quests to be sneaky and kill a npc. Poison their food without them knowing or whatever. Stab them with a special dagger while they sleep.

there are a few noncombat quests but not nearly enough. And the ones i have seen in the game are real basic real dull mainly just talk to someone the right amount of times. Or figure out a puzzle by looking at a wall to see what images match. But the rewards for them are never anything useful. A bit of xp or whatever.

I know more quests are not a priority on most peoples mind. But anything that draws you into the game more and gives you more options on what to do is a good thing. Mini games are always a good thing. Mini game quests with useful rewards for crafting supplies or whatever would be great. Not dull ones like writs go craft this this and this then put it in the box and hope it was profitable.

Just my thoughts on questing. What does everyone think?

You should maybe try Lord Of The Rings Online.

The last three expansions have been disgustingly over full with "do chores for people" quests.

Part of the reason I am no playing LOTRO currently.

Isn't there some like this? Like go find the inner city's farmers pig and bring it back to him because he thinks the bartender made is prized pig into a delectable treat?
If you chase two rabbits, you will lose them both.

Yeah there is that one, in DC IIRC.

If you had started in EP you would have found a couple of "find my guar" quests by now.

There are quite a few quests that don't involve killjoy anything.

You mean... like the three "round up the runaway guar" quests in Bal Foyen, Sulfur Pools and Kragenmoor? ;) I also remember tracking down a lost pig in Daggerfall...
Or quests to go hunting with a special quest bow for deer or something. Deer that are hard to hit.
Will rabbits do? Search in Eastmarch for that quest...
Even really simple stuff like a repeatable quest you can do every so often to help different farmers pick whatever they grow.
That one is in Cropsford, over in Cyrodil...
How about a quest working in a stable or a horse farm cleaning up the stable...
Close, in the Rift you get to clean a bug infestion from a barn, and then bring the caught bugs to a fisherman for use as bait...
Maybe one to help clear some trees for a farmer to expand his field.
Will cutting down a daedra infestation in Reapers march work? ;)
Then how about bar games. Play darts have drinking contests whatever. Just more fluff quests that add to immersion.
This is something that quite a few of us have remarked upon, and hope to someday see coming to ESO... bar games...

Point is, there are quite a few quests around where no killing is involved. And I must say, I always enjoyed them very much.

But I agree, there ought to be more! I'd especially like repeatable "random" quests (anyone remember the guild quests in TES:Daggerfall?), possibly revisiting old areas... and some of them ought to be non-combat oriented...

How about messenger quests - "...take these scrolls, bring a copy each to one of those three NPCs, who are somewhere in these three areas on three different maps?" No combat involved, unless you happen to run into something nasty along the way...

Prospector quests? "Go to these five areas on different maps, mine one sample of resource ore/wood/water in each, come back with samples for profit."

Supplier daily writs? "Bring -x- of non-refined resource -y- to NPC for reward"

Bardic quests? "visit five inns on five different maps, play one musical emote in each"

Treasure hunter quests? "Go to spot on map, find the disturbed earth somewhere in area, dig for treasure, find maybe a chest, or maybe just a old skeleton..."

Surveyor quest? "Go to these five areas on different maps, fill out survey reports, come back for profit" (Yes, just like the scout quest in cyrodil without PvP, but more of it)

Entertainer quest? "Go to this inn, dance three dances in the correct order, take a bow"

Pilgrimage quest? "take a trip, follow the waypoints, pray on each shrine, donate in the temple to finish"

I expect there will be quests where you actively have to avoid combat to prevent quest failure with the thieves guild and dark brotherhood (yes, I remember those from earlier TES games as well, and really hope that at least some of them will be like that...)

Yeah the frog race and the race in eastmarch i think it was were a nice change of pace.

But yeah still just talk to people and run around. just going to find the quar isnt exactly what i ment. I want the quests themselves to be little minigames not the standard click the arrow things. More interactive quests.
