Why no spear?

GeneralSethman
I get that the Templar has aedric spear, and I play that, but why no melee or distance spear for main hand? Throughout history it has been one of the best weapons on the battlefield. How is tameriel different? Shield and spear would be amazing to me.

Thoughts?

Would be an interesting addition, but it's probably not going to happen. Players have wanted crossbows added too, but again, not going to happen.

This question has been asked by legions of ES fans since Oblivion released, and continues to this day.

There must be some Daedric pact prohibiting the use of polearms in their games.

That said, one can hope that new skill lines will be released in the future...

Spears & polearms in general would make more sense than any other weapons that didn't make the cut, though, being by far the most widespread class of weapons throughout human history. Plus, it's not like we haven't had spears & halberds in previous Elder Scrolls games...

I don't see why everyone is so up in arms about adding new weapons. They don't have to be separate skill lines. They could just be different versions of a skill line (like Axe and Dagger are different in DW). Spear/Polearm could fall under 2H, Crossbow under Bow, etc. Essentially just skins to increase variety with a minor, almost negligible, gameplay difference.

I was not making a bid for any particular weapon, just stating reality.

P.S. "Rock" didn't make the cut either, and I think it had been used longer.

We definitely need an "unarmed" skill line......so I can beat down townsfolk with a brick.

I for one wish they'd have sporks. It really broke the game, ruined the immersion, ect. I'll never play this damn game, even though I am right now.

I know you weren't making a case for any particular weapon, but the fact is that of any class of weapon that isn't in the game already, spears & polearms make the most sense by far. There are tons of cool animations you can do for them, with the vast variety of polearms that there have been throughout history it would be really easy to do different distinct styles for each of the motifs. There's also a very good reason why they were the most commonly used class of weapon throughout human history, and it's not only that they are relatively easy to make and that you could adequately train people to use them very quickly: they are also very effective.

P.S. I said that they were by far the most widespread class of weapons in human history. Rocks may have been the most widespread weapons in human prehistory, but definitely not in human history. The term 'history' specifically refers to the time since writing was first used.

Sporks? Talk about immersion breaking! Everyone knows the spork wasn't even invented until the venerable Col. (honorific) Sanders saw the need for a utensil that had the qualities of both its predecessors, making it exponentially greater than the sum of its parts in the mid-to-late 20th Century.

And even then Its usefulness as a weapon was not even taken into consideration until 1986 when Danny Hawkins, age 6 stabbed older brother Mike for his refusal to share the last biscuit from the family bucket.

I suggest that before you make another spurious request you re-read your history military and weapons history.

    Good day Sir!

Wouldn't morning star just fall under Mace? Are there any Mace styles that look like Morning Stars? That would be awesome...

Unless you mean flails; yeah, flails would be cool....imo...but kind of redundant (see Maces)...

Spears on the other hand have a unique slot to fill, medium range; melee is close, spears/polearms could be medium, bows/staves, etc long.

Now I know distance is kind of wonky in ESO (I've melee attacked enemies from pretty far away...lol...like no way my sword actually would have connected) but I think the concept could still be cool...

Maybe they could make spears and polearms a semi-defensible weapon as well. Since they are more than just a handle and a sharp or blunt object.

Skills have been dumbed down heavily since Morrowind. Morrowind also had throwing weapons, halbreds/polearms, spears, etc.

I fear for how simplistic the next single player ES game is.

Morrowind also had it so when I clearly threw that shuriken at the bad guy, it clearly hit him, but still would say "miss"

Polearms would make a nice new skill line, and one I for one would love to see in ESO. I mean, come on, who here hasn't yet seen the "Red Viper" fight the "Mountain" in "Game of Thrones" and thought, "I wanna roll a character twirling a spear like that"...
They could resuse some animations from the aedric speat line as well... jabs, charge and radial sweep, meaning they'd have three outa five already... the cleave animation from two-handed also would work with polearms, making it four...
And then have all the different polearms as racial styles. Bosmer spear, Dwemer halberd, Breton glaive, Nord lochaber poleaxe, Maormer trident, Imperial pike, Akaviri naginata, Dunmer ranseur, Altmer spetum, Orsimer partisan, Khajiit monk's spade, Redguard voulge, Primal military fork, Daedric fauchard, Barbaric bec de corbin, Ancient elf corseque...

And we could also have one-handed short spears... check out the training near the skywatch fighters guild sometimes when visiting auridion...

Crossbows would be neat as well, but need no extra skill line, just rename "bow" to "archery" and add them as optional weapon, much like swords/maces/axes... maybe with more armor penetration yet longer reload times then bows?

Morning Stars... I expect we are talking about the flail type here, and all other flexible weapons as well, from chain whips to nunchakus or whatever... I am not sure if these wouldn't be difficult to program, flexible part of a weapon and all that. If that was no problem, then they'd make a good addition to one- and two-handed options. Though I expect they skipped them just for that reason.

Unarmed... is another skill line missing, although while I would like to see it in the game, I wopuldn't want it to be as effective as actual weapons. Punching someone in plate armor just won't do as much damage as hitting them with a battle axe after all. Not even if you add "brawling weapons" like punch daggers, brass knuckles, gloves with a horsehoe tucked inside, bricks and rocks held in your hand... Thus I'd love to see it as at best doing half the damage of a dagger, but getting some CC in their skills, throwing dirt into peoples eyes for a blind debuff, grapple for immobilize, leg sweep for a knockdown, a kick below the belt for a stun (double effect for male targets? ;) ) - that sort of thing...
