Why do people act like Buy to Play hasn't been the model since Pong? For decades, games were B2P. I'd argue the subscription model did more harm than B2P ever did.

Pong didn't have a cash shop. Next argument please.

Cash shop is not B2P. Buying ESOTU is buy to play just like buying Super Mario Bros. was. B2P put games in trillions of hands. Subscriptions don't even come close to those numbers.

The recipe can be found ingame, and if you're a ''skilled''crafter you make more drinks at a time...and they last twice the duration of the crown version. So...stop crying: CPs DO HAVE a cap afterall, and we'll get here.

PS: the crown cost is very high...10€ for 300 minutes...

    PPS: PvP ruins games.

Where is this crown store version? Cause it's not in the store when I open the crown store.

They should have made the crown store xp drinks for lvls only and the craftable for all things that use xp. I dont have any real problem with the way it is now though. Its about a 2% chance per fish to get the drop that gives you 4 drinks which is between 120 and 200 minutes of xp bonus. People wanna waste their rl money then i say go ahead. It will only put more money back into the game for development.

This is what they said a while ago, but I guess the prospect of $$$ made them change their minds once again.

Considering there's roughly only about 14,6 billion hands in the world, I doubt the accuracy of your "trillions" estimate.

That said, when we're speaking about MMORPGs, we need to compare with other MMORPGs and take into account differences such as high costs for servers & need for constant updates to keep players playing your game (keeping employers on payroll, rather than having them move on to next project).

The very first MMORPGs were almost exclusively subscription based, and were significantly more expensive than subscription MMOs today. Costs could run 6$ per hour for playing the game, or 100$+/month.

The first more affordable, big MMORPG was Ultima Online and guess what, subscription based.

Only during the past few years have F2P/B2P MMORPGs started becoming more popular, and as a result the quality has unarguably dropped.

Yet even now, over 10 years later, the market is dominated by a subscription MMO (WoW).

If subscription model did more harm than B2P ever did, then why is a subscription MMO the most played out there?
Why are people complaining about the lack of quality MMOs, and generally considering the genre to be declining?

Could it be that MMOs were in a better place, before companies got greedy & introduced these toxic Cash Shops as a result of B2P/F2P?

You can argue all you want, but not being a MMO, Super Mario Bros. did not require constant content updates or server upkeep, which is why it did not require a revenue source outside just purchasing the box (box sales always go down as time passes, which is why they're only a short term revenue).

Wonder how much that will now happen where you can't get people to join you for instances/trials due to exp potions

The actual problem will become that only the elite (who everyone for these pots seem to hate) will be able to afford to use them, increasing the divide that already exists.
