I get off the boat at the start of the game and I go to the first merchant I see. They'll give me 0 for nearly all of my inventory... Do I literally have to get a guild or something just to sell the crap I collected within the first 10 minutes of the game????
Well... the starter stuff you find in the tutorial area is pretty much worthless. Just destroy.
Except crafting mats!Items with 0 value are junk you picked up from the world. Off the ground, off tables etc.
Only stuff you find inside containers (barrels, boxes, desks, chests etc.) and stuff that drops from mobs has value.
What exactly are you trying to sell?

I was trying to sell Iron Swords, Shields, anything to that degree that I found that used to hold even a remote value in past games lol. I guess it's just going to be weird getting used to how a starter area weapon can be entirely worthless to a starter area merchant.

Its worthless to high levels, but if you want to make food and decon stuff for mats to a new player it may not be "worthless", but with so many VR14s with full crafting and millions in the bank it most likely is worthless.

Yeah no I've never played this game before and just started and was possibly expecting something more casual gamer-friendly at the very very start, not the "I HAVE TO MAKE BILLIONS EVERYDAY OR I BRING GREAT DISHONOR UPON MYSELF" form of RPGing lol.

I guess I could've been a little more specific.
Keep lockpicks, food items, other crafting materials, deconstruct gear for crafting mats. Other than that, they have a zero value for the reason I stated.

Yeah I just read up about deconstructing items in order to yield materials. I'm hoping that I'm right in assuming that means Iron Swords would yield something like an Iron Ingot, etc. I'll have to wait and see tonight when I get off work.
For white and green items (that are not part of a set) if you are not deconstructing them yourself to level crafting, I would just vendor them to a merchant. If you want to either sell items for decon to other players or trade with them so you level faster, you want to use items that you craft (the highest crafting XP is gained from deconstructing items made by another character).
Vendoring stuff will yield more gold than you think.
If you would like to sell items to other players conveniently, joining a guild that has a guild trader is a good idea. Just keep in mind that, since this is the first week of the game, guilds who have traders this week may not have them the next. But joining and leaving guilds is pretty easy in this game.
