Didn't you hear , you should just turn off all area chat , you know , they only way to communicate outside of guild/group.

Apparently turning off this awesome internally tested voice chat they didn't forsee problems with when the floodgates opened is the "solution".

(seriously I want to split time on the PC and PS4 , no remapping of controls , no text chat is plain silly , especially when the Producers specifically said in a Q/A before that you COULD hookup a keyboard and there would be text chat)

Wow I sure hope they do NOT put this in PC/MAC it will kill the game. Thanks guys, I will so not buy the console version as long as this is all they have.

Odd man out, but I really don't want them to add text chat. If there's text chat then the community is going to be expect everyone to use it, and the last thing I want to do is sit there with a keyboard in my lap while I'm playing.

Agreed they need an easier/quicker way to mute someone though.

I believe you can get keyboard extensions for both XB1 and PS4 controllers. so it won't be in your lap - but also, you can use the controller based keyboard. For PS4 it's quite fast - I don't know about xbox. But you won't be chatting while being attacked - so you'd have plenty of time! (You can use the quick emotes for emergencies :-) )

Trying to recruit for a guild is absolutely abysmal. Typing in gamer tags as the only option to add a member is just plain mind boggling. There is a wonderful game beneath these collosal screw ups but good lord did ANYBODY think this through and flesh out the guild process ?

You're making it hard...it's very simple (it's different from Pc but not harder)

When time to invite, have them meet you somewhere and hold the menu button.
    Select invite...

That's not true. The only invites you can send from that menu is group and trades. For guild recruitment you have to memorize the name with all the numbers and x's in the right place and type it in manually with the huge system keyboard covering your screen.

Voice chat should be used only in groups. Even Final Fantasy 11 had a option to plug in a keyboard to the USB port and this was back in 2003.

Good job ZOS. This was your second chance at making a first impression.

Got a video in going to upload to YouTube showing this, but all forms of chat in the console version are bad. I've had to resort to going in an xbox live party in my own, because I was spending more time muting players. I either had kinects to close to the tv, kids screaming, music and best of all, a group of people all speaking languages u don't understand.
Initially I was trying to recruit for our guild, which is almost impossible! Because the first thing is being heard over all the noise, the second part is having to write gamertags as there is no easy way off adding them.

Then there is the awesome quick chat function that not a single person is using..Seriously, been on around 12 hours now a not seen a single person use it.

Seriously ZOS, something needs to change drastically.

You want ZOS to address something and fix it? GOOD LUCK!

As expected its god-awful.. I end up turning off area chat after 5-10mins as I can not stand listening to everyone's open mics, mouth breathers, music blasting, screaming kids, people with mics turn up too high so its a garbled mess, etc...

Sad thing is this isn't even a full day in ... I expect in a week that no one will be using mics anymore because of this so there will be no form of communication.

ZOS if you're dead set on no text chat then there HAS to be push to talk for voice chat.

I feel like ZOS may try, but they are simply out of touch w/ the needs of their community. : /

Turns what could be an absolutely fantastic game into a "pretty fun if you don't feel like playing something else already" fallback plan for me.

    Such a shame.

Well if the inability to map your own controller layout is any indication, ZOS things console users are too dumb to handle any customization options and might ruin their game for themselves.

And this is why I play ESO on a PC because I had no desire to hear 12 years boys screaming obscenities at me and hear how they intend to have carnal relations with my mother when they obviously don't even know how to have said relations. It's bad enough trying to get people to use PTT on Teamspeak.

Any game with voice chat can be described with OP's post. One of the reasons I thought it was a terrible idea that the consoles do not have the option for text chat.

Voice only communication in an MMO is just not a good idea. Hopefully it doesn't kill too much of the console community.

I have had a great time so far in chat. I helped some guys out in the first zone and anyone that asked a question I tried to help them. I saw people and asked if they needed some gear since I went on a hunt for gear in the first zone and gave it to anyone that answered. There is always annoying people but a quick mute makes it easy to ignore them. Eventually they will understand the problem they created when no one else will talk to them. To each his own, but for me I am enjoying voice chat. I couldn't imagine trying to type it out on the current method that is available.

This seems to be a problem with many things, people love to perceive a perfect world, but always seem to fail in actually thinking it through. They go off with rose-colored glasses, only to be shocked when their "perfectly created" system doesn't actually work in the real world. Having dealt with engineers in manufacturing, they have this smug attitude that they know everything and that surely something they created could NEVER fail to work. Even when confronted with a failure, they'll continuously deny that it is actually a problem until someone else is called in to fix it. I've seen this with devs in other games, they have this idea in their head of how something works, even though the reality is that it works nothing like how they IMAGINE it does. How many players from the very start, months ago, said that voice chat ONLY would not work well and most people want TEXT chat... and here we are. Once again the devs put their own IMAGINED perfection ahead of reality, and now they'll have to devote resources away from new content just to try to fix this problem that shouldn't have occurred in the first place. Funny how a game that is meant to be soloable, is now being twisted into some sort of 'social experiment' on the consoles. As others have noted, many, if not the majority, of players don't want to be bothered with voice communication... text chat works perfectly fine on the PC, why ZOS decided to reinvent the wheel with the console I don't know.

It seems those complaining are non-console perspectives who are expecting a PC like interaction on console.

I've yet to play with anyone in prox or group/guild who hasn't played an MMO on PC who has any problems with the voice chat. Its those who have played MMO's on PC that are upset or indifferent. (I'm sure there are exceptions but this is my experience....little bubble of only a few hours of play today)

Seems like with some of the features that are different from pc to console, you must learn from the lesson of Master Yoda, "You must first unlearn that you have learned" it will take some time then it will become second nature.

I don't think listening to a random Nord blaring the latest Ariana Grande song is going to ever come naturally.

Sadly, most of these problems could have been avoided with the simple addition of a dedicated button for push-to-talk and a default of muted. Why on earth the default would be open mic night is beyond me (especially with so many Xbox players having kinects whose mic they're probably not even aware of)

This is only for grouping NOT guild invites. Atleast on PS4 I cannot speak to Xbox but as of now the only way to invite to GUILD is through typing out gamertags and it sucks

It seems those complaining are non-console perspectives who are expecting a PC like interaction on console.

Hate to break this to you, but if I'm playing on a console, I am part of the "console community".

It's not that I expect a "PC like interaction", I expect better mechanics from a AAA title in this day and age, especially when many of these features were solidified in MMOs well over a decade ago.

And more especially because they've taken over a year past their scheduled console release to get it right. Some leeway, I can give, but the state of the game as of console launch is nigh-amateurish and unacceptable.

    There's really no excuse.

So now they're probably going to be taking the next 6 months to fix their failed second first impression, which means that PC probably won't be seeing any of that content they've been teased w/ since launch for even longer. Again, unacceptable.
