I think the idea of Grinding is leveling quick. Doing all the side quests, discovering all locations or any quests for that matter, is good exp. Steady leveling, but its not fast, by any means. Even if you speed run them all and spampress through the dialogue, it still takes 30x larger than grinding. I got to VR1 in a span of 3-4 hours. It took me a few days going through the story.
