There's one important element you missed in this (otherwise good) analysis:

    You have a QA/testing team.

Right now I guarantee the QA/testing folks are up to their eyeballs on testing the work of the console coding folks (and have been for some time). So the only things that are being released in the Crown Store right now are things that won't pull them away from that. So we're getting cosmetic stuff, because that doesn't require the kind of testing that the rest would.

I like the idea they are holding things back until console release because of copying all the crown store purchases over. If they release new stuff now you get a 2 for 1 but if you wait then you are required to purchase it on both if you want it bad enough.

I dont see how crap like whats in the store now is going to make them more money than the sub fees did. It doesnt feel like enough, and not because Im a "gimmie gimmie' person because I dont care for the stuff anyhow. Just dont understand how they are making money with just a few items every month. Im tellin ya, they would make TONS of $$$ if they would just put stuff like character slots, barber shop, name changes ect. in the store.

Side note, I dont want them to put barber shop in the store but we all know its gonna be that way, nothing from ZOS is gonna be free anymore.

There are very few AAA titles that went to F2P, did not monetize with P2W (changing the game into a "let's cash in as much as possible before the game dies) and are actually earning enough revenue to keep delivering new updates.

They have some factors in common and ESO has none of that:

    1) Rich shop, with very nice looking gear, lots and lots of mounts (vehicles in SWTOR), with varying degree of rarity so the "whales" (compulsive buyers with lots of money) can grab all those rare things that cost 10 times as much as the others.

    2) True functionalities: respecs, bank slots, reskins, unlocking content that would be limited through the week...

    3) Those items are Bind on Equip and can thus be traded. Very important along with the next step.

    4) Tightly controlled shop currency that can be traded between players and / or ability to convert in game gold to shop currency and vice versa. This feature along with 3 allow a very known phenomenon, where people with large real life cash tend to run out of in game gold and so they keep purchasing rare mounts / gear / vehicles with real money and then put them on the guild stores.
So, the many players with lots of time on their hands but no real life money can grind lots of gold and then use that to purchase the mounts. This feeds a mechanism that allows "whales" to spend even more real cash on rarities, with the premise they'll make a lot of game gold with that.

Take away these factors and the F2P model suddenly loses a lot of potential and the game goes to a path of slow decline, at the end of which the developers implement P2W stuff to buy some more time before all is over.

More like add these things and the pay2win will cause the player base to decline. Also point 1 sounds more like a way to harm the players who cant control themselves and spend way to much.

There should be achievements where you can win Crowns or missions when the game quality is harder than normal and customers could win trophies or win Crowns. I would also like the addition of giving crowns away if someone has too many or share to those who don't have many ... At least something.

I've been saving my crowns for some real content. I bet they don't realize they are debt financing their new content with crowns, at least for some players, that likely will unsub when new content comes out and just use their accrued crowns to buy the new dungeon/zone/cyrodiil city.

I really wish people would stop demanding that they monetize a barber shop of all things. You shouldn't have to pay money to customize your base character. Extras, yes, those are reasonable. But not the base cosmetic aspects of the character.

Don't you get it? Consumers are not smart. They like to think they are getting something for "free" (F2P) or at a "discount" (B2P) even if in reality they are getting fleeced with micro-transactions on the back end. Instead of paying a nominal amount each month and just getting everything people like the illusion they are getting a "good deal". Sort of like when companies raise the prices and then "have a sale" or offer a "coupon". People are just gullible and/or willfully ignorant. The reality is nothing is free and you get what you pay for. You may not pay in the way you expect or even the amount you expect but you will pay. The same people who didn't want to pay a sub will now gleefully pay a la carte for a bunch of crap that adds up to more than the sub cost anyway. Brilliant.

I am not spending a single penny on the game until changes are made to the game that I want to see.
    1) Remove having to be in a guild to sell items to other players at a kiosk.
    2) Cosmetic modding for armor and clothing.
    3) Difficulty slider.
    4) Fully customizable player housing that isn't tied to anything in the game other than having the correct resources and enough gold to build. Don't tie it to PvP, guild membership, or anything at all. Oh, make it instanced so as not to take up world map space, too. Zeni screwed this one up already.
Any /one/ of these things implemented would get me spending again, maybe even subbing.

I don't mind if they release only three or four things a month - but have some balance each month between costumes, pets and mounts.

Pets and mounts seem to be very much in favour right now when all I actually want is costumes. When I say costumes I mean clothes. I can look like a walking heap of metal in game already if I choose to. Cosmetic armour doesn't come under costumes in my book.

Here's some items that I would pay crowns for:

    1) Changing the race of my character with all current skill points un-allocated. Common skill attributes between the characters would remain the same.

    2) Changing the class of my character with all current skill points un-allocated. Common skill attributes between the characters would remain the same.

    2) Increasing the capacity of my bank account.

    3) Increasing the capacity of that character's carry capacity.

    4) Increase the limit on the individual items I can store in the bank from 200 each to something higher.

    5) Increase one of more Maximum attributes of my mount.

    6) One time change to another alliance.

None of these would be P2W IMO.

As a former animator in the industry I can help answer that question! Most art and animation teams are usually on retainer. They may have some artists/modellers in house, and if they're not working on Project X, they'll work on Project Y. But the vast majority of artists, texturers and more are laid off after a product ships or were just freelancers brought in/outsourced to help with the project.

Few companies have massive amounts of artists/animators on hand. Usually a few full time, but not many. So they'll have a few people on hand to craft out/design things, but they're usually stretched pretty thin and are busy as hell. Graphic ninjas will generally focus on fixing old textures, creating new projects, sketching, drafting, revising, sketching, drafting, revising, revising, redoing, revising, getting feedback, screaming at their Cintiq, revising and finally finishing. They'll be proud of their work, and instantly hate everything they did the next day, and spend the next half of their career going "If I have time, I totally want to go back and redo [random_item]" because it never quite lived up to their expectations/vision.

But they're generally pretty busy people. It's not like artists sit around on their ass. There's always new things to sketch, new creations to render and things to go back and tweak, improve.

They will not make any more money with character slots and name changes than they will with any single costume, pet, or mount. They can offer them, and people will buy them, but it is not going to be something that makes the Crown Store suddenly a massive revenue generator.

I dread the barber shop in the Crown Store because the game needs more places to spend GOLD, not CROWNS, and the barber shop is a good gold sink. They are already shorting the gold sinks in the game by offering the same services for Crowns.
