"Avoid stealing" gameplay option toggle

We have an "Avoid killing innocents" option, it'd be nice to have an avoid stealing option as well. For those times when you're not interested in crime, but there's items right on top of the crafting table..

I'd prefer a confirmation message actually (Or better yet, a toggle between No warning, A warning, or don't allow me to steal at all.)

Happened to me on the weekend. Went to the blacksmith station, tried to interact with it and instead I stole an item lying right next to it. Got a bounty and then a guard caught me - I did have a bunch of stolen stuff on me that I lost(I guess justice had been served). All because of an accidental theft.

To quote myself quoting one of the devs responsible on the subject:
Further, having a “No Theft” toggle would remove interactivity in the world and it would eliminate one of the few non-combat risks that people might encounter. Sometimes even the most careful player will run into a hostile monster by accident (and sometimes they get killed by this), but we do not allow players to toggle off hostility. That would be quite odd, right?

I'm sorry, are you literally claiming that having a player's character choose to pick up and pocket an item against the wishes of that player is an intended element of difficulty?

Or, put another way, are you quite literally claiming that the poor design choices in effect here are only to screw over players?

So... yeah, this is, apparently, deliberately designed this way to screw us over. :\

Happened to me too... Thank god my inventory was empty...

As for Gamerz idea. I only wait for those who scream "IMMERSION BREAKING!!!!". Would be helpful though.

Either way. I believe its a learning experience. And I bet it won't happen again to you, after the first time. :D

Honestly, the loudest detractors tend to be people that are busy erecting a straw man about turning off the ownership tag for containers on a whim, or about how stupid being able to turn off guard hostility would be.

Immersian breaking is when you go to talk to a a merchant but then some other random npc guy pushes you and you "miss" the merchant and accidently grab his carrot.

Much as I hate to say it... grab NoAccidentalStealing from ESOUI.

At least until ZOS comes to their senses on this one. It's not a good fix, because it actually makes thieving a lot safer overall. But, it's the best stop gap we have at the moment. :\

It is super easy to not steal from a container. In fact, you can look in the container first before deciding if you want to attempt the theft. It is also easy to back out of attempt if it was a mistake.

But, things on tables and such, and lockboxes that are near something you would normally interact with those are the problem. There is no way to back out of those.

Also, I found that changing the angle of the camera can really help. Stock, the game has a right offset to the camera for over the shoulder viewing. Problem is, you can be facing say a crafting station, but the camera angle is pointing to the owned item or lockbox. Changing the camera angle so it is more centered can reduce accidental thefts.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

Agreed. It's not so much the looting of containers (as that has a toggle) its the picking up of stuff off tables or racks when you try and speak to a vendor. Nothing like going to talk to a guild trader, picking up an axe with zero value you didn't want and being killed on site and fined - not a great experience.

Problem is, that does not work on items placed in the world, or locks or lockboxes.

There should not be a toggle for this. It should be like real life, where when I talk to a cashier or wander into a stranger's home items in my field of vision mysteriously appear in my pocket.

Yeah - this is problematic. I was in the bank menu when a lockbox appeared (but not in my field of vision). When I exited the bank menu so I could talk to the banker again to enter the guild bank, my cursor was over the lockbox that I didn't know was there and I clicked "E" before realizing this. Instant crime, instant $77 fine. Seriously?

Off topic - I really wish they'd fix the bank menu interface so that you don't have to back out of talking to the banker and talk to them again if you want to use the guild bank or guild store.

Be glad you were not around in the days before the made the bank/vendor shut up when you chose an option. I would get to listen to the banker exclaim about Nedras about 15 to 20 times some bank visits.

However I do agree that we should be able to move around the bank menu without exiting the banker conversation.

There was a thread about this not very long ago that was answered by ZOS. They essentially said, "that's the way it was designed, learn to be careful." Not saying I agree with it (I don't), just passing along info.

On a related note, there is an addon that can help with this. It essentially makes it so you have to be hiding in order to steal. The name of it is "No Accidental Stealing". The problem I have with it is that it makes no distinction between containers and items in the world, so you also can't look in containers without sneaking, which I like to do, then decide whether or not to hide and steal from it. So, I don't use the addon on most of my characters, I just do the "be careful" thing.

Yes, if it goes in the pocket, but it should be a two part process (like it was in oblivion).

They don't beat the hell out of you when you pick up something from the shelf at the local mart, only when you try to walk out the door with it.

Well if they just want you to "be careful" then grabbing something and talking to someone or interacting with a crafting station should be on different buttons/functions.

cause when I go out to a store irl, I don't try to talk to a clerk and accidentally pick something up and put it in my pocket right in front of them. I mean that's a wholly different action.

Yep a toggle would be good! I went to craft potions in crag and pressed E to use the table but I guess there was a safebox right next to it and I got a bounty. I was confused for a moment!

Yes this needs a toggle, being able to accidentally steal things is ridiculous and poor design.
