We'll likely be down for a couple more hours.

I appreciate the admins responding. But giving an estimated time like you guys had promised is super important for the player base.

I just bought the game a week ago and to me this is sort of unprofessional. I have played many mmo's and even small time companies release eta's. You should give your team a window that's reasonable for them and allows us to not keep asking "Is it up yet?!". What ever it might be 4 hours or 6 hours or even if you say 6 hours but finish earlier or even have to prolong the eta. People would be so much happier with this then just saying "Servers will be down" and no ETA. I expect this from small time gaming companies and mmo's with player bases in the thousands but even then I really have never seen any company not give ETA's. And its obviously been an issue that you guys promised to started giving estimates on. I really love this game so far but please from a new players eye try to at least give us some kind of ETA normally. Not just "It will be up when its up".

This is not a game leaving issue for me or anything like that. I just love the game and want to see it grow all the more! So please hear your communities plea for eta's and try to set up proper times with your team that allow you to give out eta's.

I love how everyone really starts complaining when maintenance takes longer than expected. This is normal. This happens on every MMO that exists. Some maintenance times take less than others. Patches take longer than regular maintenance times. It's a fact of life.

For those of you who think they know how it should work, I'd love to know which companies you have worked for who run and maintain an MMO. I'd also love to see these flawless executions of maintenance and updates that you have successfully completed. Maybe then those that are like myself can believe that there is indeed no reason for these waits.

Until that time, pull out one of your many other games, enjoy them or watch a movie, and keep checking in for more updates later. Now back to some Ocarina of Time for me.

true, but still, an " its taking longer then expected" and an eta would be nice, instead of lets not say anything until there is a riot on the forums lol

The problem is lots of people think this is just maintenance. But in their notification they are actually doing PATCH maintenance. So this isn't just a regular maintenance cycle. They may have come across unforeseen issues once they loaded the patch data onto the servers and are running around trying to get it fixed. We don't know.

Communication can be a tricky thing as well, because just take a look at how WoW used to do things. They used to give estimates all the time years ago, but all that happened there was when they didn't meet the estimated time, then people cried and complained more. Not actually giving estimates and times means that no one can point a finger and say "But you told us it would be up at this time."

My words can't convince people, I know, but I can at least try to have people see common sense. But that's all I can do, try.

It's reassuring to know that we have so many expert developers playing the game. Some of them even have MMO experience, including megaserver experience. This is the only logical conclusion.

Where I also like to see servers get up as fast as possible, there isn't really any reason to cry over it...It's part of the game, sometimes it's fast, sometimes slow.

A rough estimate was given about an hour ago, saying about a couple/few more hours.
So I'm guessing 2-3, Central. [Edit: I was wrong, I'm in already!]

For people saying it should be as quick as closing down notepad and restarting it: that's not quite how rebuilding an MMO server farm works.

Very roughly (since this will change between each company) it goes something like:

First, you take down external connections, and the game server processes.
Next, you ensure all servers are fully synched and everything it written.
Then you perform maintenance tasks that could not be performed before. Install OS security updates, make DB schema changes, run scans on the DB to clean up, etc etc. This can take a while, depending wat maintenance needs doing. There will be no cool features that you'll see from this step, either.
You copy the updated resources to each machine from your versioning system, then build them on each machine (or build them centrally and push the executables, which can work if every server is identical).
You find that the YUM update of some basic OS parts also updated FD_SETSIZE, which your compile needs to be considerably large, so you need to manually edit that back.
    Recompile again.
Run the sanity tests, most of which will hopefully be automatic, but some will be manual, so mean hopping ingame with the latest client before you open the public floodgates, to check they worked.
If stuff didn't work, in a bad way, you have four options: mark it as something to fix next restart; fix it *really fast* (very minor easy issues); roll just that one fix back (not always possible); or abort the whole update.
Once you've got everything verified as working on the first machine at least, then you can allow downloads o fthe client to start.
Then you do all the other machines.
Then it's time to open the floodgates.

    Why?
    Downtime should be near non-existent.
Players play on build A while build B is being patched.
When build B s ready, you send out a message that the client needs a restart. They download a patch and are back in game on build B within minutes.

This is 2015, antiquated methodologies have no place here.

Maybe it's not the build as much as it is the maintenance?

Maintenance is usually 2-3 hrs, not 5 hrs and counting

You're not in IT are you?

I am. If I took the servers offline for 5 hours for basic maintenance they would find another guy to run the IT dept. Where I work the minute the servers go offline the phones start ringing. If the servers were down for 5 hours the people who answer the phones would have killed me at the 4th hour.

Things happen. You should know that if you're in IT. And they were apparently doing other things other than just patching that had to do directly with the server.

For people saying it should be as quick as closing down notepad and restarting it: that's not quite how rebuilding an MMO server farm works.

Case in point: by coincidence, we also had a server update at work today. This normally means about 15 minutes of downtime (we're only small).

There aren't many places where the main and test server differ; mostly, it's in the database data, and the pure scale of the thing. But there are also some config files that differ.

And the server could not start up. We tried a full reboot of the server (typically, we don't need this, and the server uptime was close to two years by this point). We tried rolling back to the old version of the code (when a restart fails, so you roll back, then the rollback fails, that's the Worst Possible Case for a restart). We tried a variety of other things.

Eventually, we found that in the live server, one config file had a 0 where it should have a 1. So we were down for an hour, finding this single-bit error, in a file that should have been impossible to change under our usual procedures, but... well, things often happen which are only possible in hindsight. :)
