Champion point: Why just for veteran ranks?

I'm curious to what the thought process was behind making champion points accumulate only on characters that have hit VR1+. I ask this because it has crossed my mind that with this system in place the game becomes less ALT friendly because I'm sure that many players will feel they are wasting their time on their sub 50 toons when they could be accumulating Champion points on their VR toons.

When champion points were first announced I believe it was on a stream with Matt Frior and two or more streamers. One of the other streamers quickly pointed out that it sounded like the Badda$$ ranks in the borderlands series yet those ranks are earned from the beginning of the game. Doing so allows the player to concentrate on the games quests and story line making the ranks come second and making them feel more like a bonus and not something to concentrate on. ESO on the other hand isn't doing this making the ranks feel like the primary goal while the rest of the quest/story experience is left as a secondary objective. This system could potentially lead players to grind out champion points as fast as possible since it's seen as a primary and not a secondary feature to the game and such a large grind could lead to burnout and loss of players.

Thoughts? Comments?

Thanks for reading.

I don't see how this can work without letting people accumulate points from level 1. By the time the new players get to vr 1, the balance will be really out of whack between more experienced vets and new ones.

Why can't you accumulate CP's pre-VR when you have to spend them pre-VR as your characters are going to be weaker than 1.5 without them? It's pretty rude, really. CP's should be for strengthening your VR characters only, not for grinding with VR characters to use on pre-50's.

It is just like Diablo 3. You have to "cap" your leveling to start gaining those points. You can consider reaching "Veteran Ranks" as the real cap, because this is the truth. Story-wise as well, it really all ends at 50 with Molag Bal, what you do afterwards is being forced through the "enemy" factions content / quests / story, which was a terrible idea since day one, but an obvious one to "triple the content".

We never really had true content for "VR ranks", with the exception of Craglorn which was required once most people hit VR 10, or these days there would be even less playing the... "end game". Now we get a few thousand "Champion levels" to fool ourselves that the "end game" doesn't... end!

Besides, Champion Points are not even important pre level 50, of course they can make a lowbie character ultra strong, but you can still sail through the first 50 levels with relative ease. The true difference will of course be at VR 14 and "competitive end game" (you will excuse me if I ROFL here).

    An interesting point of view.

I've seen many who will suffer the 70 cap saying how they've stopped playing their VR14s and gone back to leveling alts so they can run them through the VR stuff after March 16.

That seemed reasonable to me, but you comment here makes me wonder: true, a new VR1 has all the VR questing content to plow through for XP/CPs but I wonder how the XP rate in that compares to the repeatable stuff at VR14.

Of course, ZOS will nerf to Oblivion all the XP grind spots people discover, just like the 'crystals' and other XP sources got destroyed in Craglorn, but even so it may still be perhaps better.

Moreover, I've seen it reported that Enlightenment is zeroed if you log into a non-VR character so maybe ZOS are deliberately making alts seriously handicap 'mains', in which case even more reason players with VRs will abandon pre-VR alts.

It's supposed to be an AA system to show progression once you hit lv50. Vet ranks are allegedly being removed at some point in the future and this is how players will progress and build their characters.

As it's based off of xp accrued instead of rewarding it based off of end-game achievements or gameplay (End game gameplay gives garbage xp when compared to grinding mobs.) it's a completely boneheaded design and shows ZOS' laziness when it comes to implementing new systems beyond the cash shop.

Currently and it will go to the server tomorrow unless altered in that patch the best method of gaining CP will be via grinding mobs. So you're telling me @ZOS_MariaAliprando that the best way to progress in an end-game focused AA system is to not do end-game content but rather just mindlessly grind mobs in a group of 2?

To that I respond with my advice given above and a huge "LOLOL". Seriously. "LOLOL".

After they announced the final 70 points to a VR14, I started leveling alts. In that time, got 2 to VR1 and one to level 42. The last one may make VR1 in time, so I can play any class and earn more points. After going through that grind, I hope they don't backtrack on it.

Yeah; it makes it hard enough to just ignore optimal gains even at VR levels and doing what you like while just getting them slower. I realize that the amount of XP you get from 1-5 really is not that much to make progress toward a champion point, but at least having it add to the pool doesn't take it away all together.

I would like to be able to gain CPs on all of my characters once one of my characters hit VR. I played one character pretty exclusive since early launch. I feel like switching between roles will now be harder to do, requiring a CS respec. So my Tank will probably stay a tank and I need to level an alt to DPS. I can't play too often (few times a week). I will set my Tank behind my guild by trying to bring an alt to VR.

It may be a nitpick but it is a legit issue.

because they can connect the change to a dlc squeezing the last drop of money out of you if you want to gain CPs from the beginning at lvl 1.
    hey its only convenient^^

Think it might be tied in to the idea of becoming a Champion?

VR has historically been noted by completion of the main quest line: i.e. saving the world?
Just because you don't like the way something is doesn't necessarily make it wrong...

    Earn it.

Personally I've always thought if pre level 50+ characters can use the champion points, it only seems logical that those characters could earn them in some form also. As it is I think it's a little bit of a strange system at the moment in that regard.

If you can be anything, be kind.
