The Road Ahead:
The most important thing to remember about Tamriel Unlimited's virtual currency system is that we're not adjusting the base game—it will be exactly the same game, with the same leveling pace, experience point gain, user interface, etc. that you have been used to since April of last year. We're adding customization and convenience items in the Crown Store, but those will be added to the game as it is now; we're not going to make it harder for you to enjoy the game you already play to encourage you to use the Crown Store.
Does this mean that Experience from kills and other sources will be put back to its original values? Or will there be some other balancing mechanic, such as large bonus Experience from Group Content completion? Or will we have to keep testing and find out ourselves? I hope not, I'd love to get some official insight on this!
Personally, I'd much rather just have huge boosts at the end of group content, like Veteran Dungeons and Trials. People are always going to look for the most efficient way to "grind", so it's my philosophy that it would be better to design that into your game experience in a way that reinforces your game's core branding. On the one hand, ESO has beautiful environments and a rich world to explore, so overworld grinding
sounds wise at first, but unless you're carefully engineering every monster spawn to be equally grindable, you'll still wind up with very specific spots where people will congregate. Due to how overworld XP works, this is doubly bad, because it leads people to detest each other for interrupting their perfect 2-person grind condition.
Dungeons, on the other hand, are solid group content, with their own beautiful environments, and which we already can see are intended to be played through many times over. The various kill achievements, timed run achievements, and set item drops make that evident.
Will we see the rewards for these experiences increased to compensate for the recent Experience changes, or is there something else in store for us? Will Silver and Gold content have better Experience rewards to encourage its use by more game-oriented players, versus the immersion-oriented players who already like it for what it is?
In any case, I hope Zen finds a way to make it all work out.
