Very undesirable split between swords, axes, and maces. Can this be changed to One-Handed Melee and Two-Handed Melee, or some similarly-named different thing? I for one don't use just swords or just axes, but change up which I use depending on if it's 1-handed or 2-handed. Thoughts from others?

From a logical standpoint what they did is correct. Someone that knows how to use swords (any size) doesn't mean he knows how to use maces.....

On the other hand, if someone knows how to fight with a dagger doesn't mean he knows how to use two-handed swords, so the logical standpoint cuts both ways :)

Well if you consider that in general the style you fight with a curved sword is completely different than a straight sword, you have to do some gross generalizations unless you want 20 different "masteries" :p To me it is more logical to go the way they did.

I would argue that it is easier for a 1H sword user to adapt for fighting with a 1H mace than it would be for a 1H dagger user to adapt for fighting with a 2H sword, but whatever :)

As a several years Iai jutsu practitioner I can tell you that is not entirely true. When my dojo switched from Enshin Ryu to Niten Ichi, it was very easy to adapt to a wakizashi. You could consider a wakizashi almost as a dagger.

I seriously doubt it would be the same with a mace....

As an experienced combatant I can tell you some swords are more like axes and some axes are more like maces. ;-) If we're going the "logic" route, then there is far more difference between a small weapon (one-handed) and a large weapon (two-handed) than between an axe and a sword. More to the point, however, I'm more concerned with how this affects playing the game. I'd rather be able to either use all one-handed weapons or all 2-handed weapons better for a single point investment, and not have to double invest just because I like dual-wielding swords but using an axe with a shield. :3
