Healing NPC being attacked in town made me a "fugitive from justice"

OK, so I wanted to be a good Samaritan. Another player was attacking an NPC shopkeeper. So, I healed the shopkeeper. I instantly became a "fugitive from justice" and was killed by a guard. btw, with almost 25,000 points of damage. Um, me thinks trying to heal a wounded NPC should NOT cause one to become a "fugitive from justice"
