Staying Positive

It's upto us collectively as a community to make sure that p2w never rears it's ugly head. With consoles players maybe being more demanding for p2w types item we have to say "NO". It's also upto us to battle the trolls and muppets that come with a larger population.

They have repeatedly stated that convenience and cosmetic items only in the crown store .

That being said i'm still a bit skeptical, they did tell lies recently or at the very least they were economical with the truth.

This forbes article suggests that ESO will clean up on consoles due to the lack of viable competitors.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2015/01/22/why-elder-scrolls-online-may-be-a-hit-on-consoles/

Usually a sub model fails because it doesn't hold enough subs. The reason for the change here is rebranding for the console market.

They're been negotiating with microsoft and they finally managed to get a deal that works for everybody apart from a minority who support the sub fee only idea compared to the larger main console customer base.

The dlc model closely resembles skyrim as does the console ui model.
Roughly 36% of skyrim sales can be attributed to xbox.

At first when i saw news i said "oh no this is Swtor all over again"
Watching the twitch stream changed my mind however and suddenly it looks like the model could work.

So i'm staying positive new content on the way and influx of new players coming in.

It if all goes pear shaped i've been meaning to level my cats in hello kitty online in preparation for the new expansion "clouds of catagonia".

While I entirely agree with your sentiment, the community has no say, whether the game carries on largely unaffected (as did Rift) or nosedives in the content design area (as LOTRO did after not many months) depends entirely on ZOS integrity; Trion had it, largely, Turbine sold theirs to Warner Bros.

Zenimax doesn't exactly fill me with confidence based on research of some of their other dealings (Google is your friend) and the fact that ZOS have deliberately made it so Store items are unavailable by in-game means (by which I mean you can't earn Store currency simply playing the game like you can do in Rift and some extent even LOTRO) isn't a good sign IMO.

In those games, as a subscriber I can literally get anything in the Store by playing the game, I don't need to spend real cash, ZOS aren't allowing that to happen.

I meant by protesting and making our views known. If it's going be p2w eventually we will probably not be able to stop it but that doesnt mean we can't try..

Also with the console "i want it now" mentallity they might demand that certain p2w type items be put in the crown store.

Zos says they listen to the community so if enough people protest then they have to act eventually.

I'm anxiously awaiting tomorrows patch notes. All we know is there are big changes and the notes are huge and it seems 1.6 is coming at us just in front of the console release. Maybe I am crazy, but I have a feeling some changes will go a long way to make this feel more like Skyrim online rather than an MMO with Elder Scrolls lore.

    *puts on tinfoil hat*

Not that I would have a problem with it either way as I like this game now and I like Skyrim, but I just think console players are really going to expect something a lot closer to Skrim than this game actually is. Of course this sort of change would be "SWG NGE" level of change and I hate that comparison getting thrown out willy nilly usually as it is generally exhageration.

While your enthusiasm is a great sentiment, ZOS will do whatever their media conglomerate parent company (who are not gamers, have no feelings of preservation for TES, and will squeeze any idea for a better bottom line) tells them to do.

Wait and see, that's my motto for this matter.

So maybe updates will come slower. I expect the game will still be great and getting better! I for one have high hopes for the crown store providing things I have been hoping for... mostly character adjustment options, though I won#t say no to a few nice costumes to dress up for special occasions or the occasional interesting mount... ;)

    They opened the door.

They could align it all just wonderfully like a talented air traffic controller, or we could soon be watching the planes crash and burn. I'm hopeful for the former, but more realistic about the latter given how they have a track record for "smooth" up till now.

In regards to having a say in it if they start going P2W moreso than their current proposed schema, ask yourself, if the new players coming in either don't mind that there is a cash shop or actually like shelling out money for shortcuts, and that population outnumbers or provides more revenue than those that don't like it, what do you think ZO$ will do?

    Bear in mind:

    https://youtube.com/watch?v=4RxYZLOS5Jw

When asked WHY change the sub scheme, Matt basically (after a long speech about listening to the community), said that we asked for it. I don't recall any outcry around these parts, was this somewhere else? Maybe the investor community?

Still hope it works because I'm a TES fan, but it's hard to be optimistic.

The best way to stay positive is to play the game and avoid the forums. Because the btp announcement is still fresh it's easy to get caught up in the negativity. Try to reserve final judgement until after it's been live for a while.

If that's a title they need to fire the guy who comes up with them. But really I doubt console gamers will demand P2W items (DCUO is a great example) and even if it is, it would only effect that platform.

At first when i saw news i said "oh no this is Swtor all over again"

That would be a good thing.

SWTOR has been incredibly profitable since it switched to free to play.

People saying it died and failed have absolutely no clue. It's still got a hell of a lot of people playing it.

Profitable probably but the free 2 play model had paywalls everywhere which made it not fun. It might of got better since but i never went back to find out.

Well; I think that is actually what makes it work. It encourages people to subscribe so rather than just be a F2P game, it really is still just subscription based with a way to sample it for free. It of course may or may not be better if it had a better showing for itself as free with less restrictions.

Most of their money though is coming from subscribers who also purchase stuff in the cartel shop. Mostly cosmetic and it plays on people who are attracted to the Star Wars lore buying RNG packs hoping for a rare item.

The only problem SWTOR has is for all the money they boast on making since going "F2P," they really do not seem to be investing it in the game or developers. I think that is the EA way and just hope that ZOS; while I am sure is all about making money like everyone else in the world; is at least a bit more interested in this game where EA has much bigger or as big video game franchises.

No, the paywalls are still quite bad.

In fact the cash shop and the whole free to play model they have has EA written all over it. It's terrible. More thought goes into the shop than the game which is a shame. Plus it's a lot of RNG lockbox lottery in the shop and I don't agree with that.

I meant good purely because it makes enough money to keep going, which i'm guessing we'd like to happen here, and brought the game to a lot more people which is always good.

As long as the shop and paywalls aren't a thing (paying for hiding helmet, that kind of rubbish that BioWare added) that take up all the focus then i'm prepared to be optimistic.
