Were forward camps removed to incentivize cash shop soul gem purchases?

Yes yes yes, conspiracy nut and all that.

Really though, they have obviously been planning the switch to F2P a long time.

Thoughts?

It is possible. I am going to go out on a limb and suggest that many players on the forums aren't too keen at the moment on giving ZOS the benefit of the doubt about why anything was taken out or held back over the last couple of months. Yet, people were complaining about forward camps and asking for them to be changed or permanently removed. So there is plenty of room at the moment for any interpretation of motive.

My guess is that we will see regular forward camps return to siege merchants and quartermasters and limited forward camps sold in the Crown Shop.

I'm pretty sure it was unintended, but it does help incentivize the cash shop. Forward camps will be coming back with restrictions leading to use of more soul gems, but I doubt this was ZoS's plan all along to hook us on soul gems.

You don't have to buy them from the cash shop.

B2P is the term. Not F2P.

But yes, now that I think of it, it make sense.

But then again, I don't mind. If I do PvE for an hour, I can fill up a dozen souls. And the empty ones are cheap.

No. They got rid of them because many people voiced strong opinions that the game would be better without them.

I am still uncertain whether Cyrodiil is better though. While the horse riding simulator has not bothered me as much as I thought it would and there is some satisfaction knowing when a castle defender dies she probably ain't coming back, I do miss the epic prolonged battles and I find there is a lot more waiting around as opposed to actually fighting.

Anecdote to illustrate how bizarre I find this claim:
Let's say I bought a new TV. Around the same time I made the statement, "I have no plans to buy a new house" and someone paraphrased it as "jrkhan says he's not going to buy a new house". Lets say I then got a raise and/or another kid.
I then announce "I'm planning on buying a new house"
The obvious conclusion is that I lied! And my purchase of the TV 6 months ago was actually planned for the new living room!

The purchase gate DOES make a difference.

Also, you can buy empty grand soul gems in-game relatively cheaply (121g). And noobs don't rez anyway, so why would they buy gems with real money?

I'm pretty sure that the autosave feature in Oblivion was planned so that they'd be able to put a cash shop into TESO after 11 1/2 months and people would be used to it.

Eventually, I'm sure you'll be able to buy them in the cash shop.

It's going to turn into a "do I want to put enough in-game time in to get the item, or do I want to just spend $5." That's how this is all going to go a year from now. Count on it. This is how MMO cash shops work.

The analogy would be complete if you add that you could only place your T.V. in one space in your new living room, the space is an odd size, and the TV is a perfect fit.

Once you see one gaming company employee leave and start blogging, these sorts of things move from the realm of lunacy into possibility. You have to capture the blogs fast, though. The companies apparently enforce their nondisclosure agreements.

I can see Zenemax can make tons of money selling forward camps in store :o

Best comment ever, remember when wheeler commented in a thread and everyone was like zomg Brian you're the best. Funny took them 9 months to realise this guy is out of his depth and has no idea what so ever of how to fix the mess he made.

Steady they got there in the end I guess.

Yes. The b2p model is just a variant where you pay the right to use the cash shop.

    This anecdote is poorly chosen.
You are not a company that sold a product based on the promise that the game would remain subscription based because it is the best model for an MMO.
There are quotes of devs floating around the forums about it.

And those quote are showing they understand full well how destructive the f2p model is and how much the only viable model is the subscription.
This move to b2p/f2p is just an investor getting impatient and wanting faster ROI, ruining any chance he would have to get a long term cash cow at its disposal.

Anyway, on subject, no, the forward camps were not removed in preparation of the f2p switch. They were removed because tha twas the right thing to do in order to improve the game.

    I don't think so.

Zerg blob bombing was a huge problem back in the days of Forward camps. Battles were determined by which side had more FCs, not by which side did better. I believe ZOS would have removed the FCs regardless of the change to the business model.

This question cannot be serious. Soul gems are already cheap and plentiful; it'll only be beneficial to the hardcore players who cannot take the time to pay 10k gold for a stack of 100 if they run out.

FC were removed because of AD abuse. They were not in Beta.
