The future of Add-ons

For those that use them, and I think that's the majority of players, add-ons have vastly improved the quality of game play since the beta days. Unfortunately, add-ons and their authors get no love from ZOS, and little enough from us. I'm reluctant to think what will happen if the new B2P model results in add-on authors leaving the game, and their add-ons as well. We have already lost some favorites, like CraftStore. I'm expecting to see some UI changes in 1.6 and/or 1.7, based on the Twitch interview. But ZOS has shown little interest in changing the UI or supporting add-ons. I don't see that changing, especially with consoles in the mix. I know people are emotional about B2P and the Crown Shop, but what do you think about losing your favorite add-ons along with this? It could happen. I don't know if this new model would work for me if I have to use the default UI.

I'm sure add ons are overpowered anyway They probably need to be nerfed.

Because more people are going to end up playing the game due it being b2p there should be more addons. Right now the add-on library is pretty small and some are pretty outdated. Hopefully ESO bring b2p will attract people/devlopers to make apps.

Plus addons are pretty easy to make. It written in lua which is a pretty straight forward language.

If they added user made addons to the crown shop more Developers would create addons.

ZOS would have to get more involved in add-on process before this happens. They don't write them, and I'm sure they would have to get authors permission. And if I was an author, I would want to get paid for my work.

If anything some of the older addon authors may come back given that anyone that has purchased the game will be able to login. Other than just plain not liking the game, there no reason for someone that is currently not subscribed not to login.

I know a couple of addon authors maintain addons without even having a subscription, so at least this will make it easier for them to maintain their addons.

I suspect that the influx of players may also bring some new addon authors.

I had not even considered the future of Add-ons outside of the fact that they would all break at the 1.6 launch and have to be updated... but if there's no one to update it because they all leave.

Maybe we can get @Wykkyd‌ to weigh in. Last I recall he already seemed to be at his wits end with ZOS' stunts. If we lose big names like him we may as well go without add-ons or try to use the "fix all" libraries that are supposed to make out of date add-ons work again.

    Hopefully @timidobserver‌ is right though.

We already have a model for this....Skyrim. Mod community is still active for PCs, console users are SOL.

Add-Ons/UI Changes that ZoS needs to implement themselves:

    1) A built in DPS meter.

    2) Different inventory display options.

    3) Optional Mini-Map for those that really want it.

    4) CraftStore/Guild Trader price listings, things of that nature.

    5) Better toolbars for tracking Horse Feedings, EXP, numbers on life bars, player information being displayed when looking at them, basically ggFrames or Azura or FTC but built in.

If ZoS does not want to do this *** themselves, then they need to stop peeing all over the Mod Writers and hire them full time for their work, really that simple.

Also I really like the proposed idea of having Mod Makers sell their goods through the Crown Shop. THAT would be an incentive to both make mods and sub for Crowns, without it being Pay To Win.
Bobbity Boop, this game might become poop, but I'll still play because I'm just a pile of goop!

I would never dream to put words in a high paying executive's mouth or state how they feel about something. That would be wrong of me. I simply posted an observation about something I saw and noted it as a plausible explanation for an increased focus on consoles. The rest is up for others to infer as they will :p

    /agree

When it's hard to even find an up-to-date character builder among the ones that were abandoned X patches ago, job #1 is getting more people in the game.

Only PC players. How will console crowd react to that? If they are as emotional as we've shown to be in past few months, I can't imagine they would just accept it.

They don't have a choice. Changes to the game are a violation of PSN/XBL ToS.

Which is another reason I wish I could play my characters on both. I need the add ons to help get skyshards, lorebooks, and clear zones.

Honestly, this is the biggest fear I have with this whole F2P debacle. I can't play without my addons (yes, the stock interface is so awful, I would quit playing if I couldn't use addons).

If we start losing addons because the addon devs quit, that's what's going to kill this game the fastest for me.

hopefully all the addon authors give them what they deserve and stop helping them fix their game for free.
after all the ESo dev team is flawless and perfect so there is no need to question their all mighty ui. just like there is no need to question any of their decisions right? just stfu and keep spenden

I stopped buying COD after Black Ops 2, and they are still making it. I hear each version is getting worse, just like I expected. COD was always a terrible game and I refuse to buy it. Doesn't mean it won't continue to sell. I bet this forum has very little influence on how many copies of ESO sells on console.

personally, no worries whatsoever. Will make do one way or another, just as i have in other MMOs :)
and probably half-off topic, but since we are talking about continuation of addons..

a huge, huge thanks (again!) to @Garkin for all the work he has put out thus far, for all the help he has given to so many people, myself included god help him, for all the addons i wouldn't have been able to continue to use without him

Yeah, I suspect there will be a lot of them. Especially since everything is segregated. PC/Mac plays with PC/Mac, XB1 with XB1, and PS4 with PS4. Dividing up an already lackluster population will probably leave things pretty barren.
