Kicked for "spamming"

I recently got disconnected from the server for "exceeding the message rate limit", or something to that effect, despite having not posted anything for several minutes. What I had posted was at a perfectly reasonable rate, and one that had never gotten me kicked off the server before. I do hope that this is just a bug, and not the ZOS team being incompetent.

Did you experience any lag just before getting booted?

This error often shows up after a lag spike and is just the server catching up with all the commands you had sent.

So for example if you were trying to open a door and pressed 'E' multiple times, those presses all hit the server at once and it boots you for spamming

i had the same problem twice already.
i was not chatting at all, just opening chests and bags.
then suddenly i got a message i was kicked for spamming.

If you use Wykkyd's outfitter and swap skills too fast or during combat this will happen.

Here is the full article:

Players who receive error 318 may be disconnected because of excessive messaging. Please refrain from sending too many messages (spamming).
If any AddOns are installed, we suggest disabling them and see if that resolves the problem.

If the player believes they have received this message in error, they should please type /bug in the in-game chat box and log the following information:

• The entire error message
• What zone they were in when the error happened
• If they were in a particular cave or dungeon
• What they were doing (crafting, battling, etc.)

Alternatively, players can also provide the above information directly to Customer Support.
