"The ESO Media Push" by Kevingway from Tamriel Foundry

The following is a call to arms by Kevingway, from the Tamriel Foundry forums:

Hey guys,

Over the course of this game’s life, I’ve noticed that YouTube videos and other forms of media are actually quite rare. Any theorycrafter finds it difficult to conjure up all the different resources and tutorials necessary to create a stable build without poking around ingame, and other forms of entertainment related to ESO are severely lacking.

I propose that over the next couple of months, the community bands together to fill the YouTube “today” search pane with more content than hour-long playthroughs and Angry Joe reuploads.

I’m just now finishing up my last semester of college, so obviously I’ll have more free time to contribute videos similar to those I’ve done in the past, but I need some help. Not only does ESO have very little content in its name, but also this content receives very few views due to, I’d imagine, people having no reason to search ESO knowing what will show up (not much).

I’d like to extend this drive for content creation beyond Tamriel Foundry and into the official ESO forums, but I’m not currently subscribed. If somebody could keep this potential campaign running over there, and we could brainstorm some ideas for interesting media that would inspire others to do the same, that would be great. I’ve always enjoyed browsing YouTube for general gaming content, and ESO’s lack of media attention draws an even keener focus toward its bad hype.

How We Can Help:
1. Please comment w/ your favorite Twitch Streams/You Tube Channels
2. Post your Twitch stream, You Tube Channel and when you normally stream
3. Get the word out

I'm pretty sure ZOS pays for a marketing team. Doing their work for them, and for free, somehow doesn't interest me.
I've been muted since November 2017 because of the whiny crybabies on this forum and the liberal ZOS employees coddling them.

According to south park, I'm a grandpa. I have no interest in watching youtube videos of people playing games and commenting on them.

As for data and guides, I prefer the written form.

Couldn't agree more on the uselessness of videos. How come today's kids who are commonly considered impatient and lacking in attention span can still stand watching slow, boring, badly made YouTube videos that maybe contain the information they need?

What happened to written guides? Text with still images for illustration and clarification is fully searchable, and it's a lot quicker to take in than the spoken word.

Sometimes I'm to tired to play (cause I'm really really old), but I still wanna ESO, so I veg out to streamers or youtubers. I greatly enjoy the content put out, and I will agree that there's not enough of it.
If I had anything meaningful to contribute to youtube or twitch I would, but it seems that me leveling slowly through Deshaan somehow isn't good television :-P

For the people who are criticizing this idea already in favor of written media, it's ok to have both, some game information lends itself to video/social media and some lends itself to the written word. Videos are far form useless and for some people are probably easier to create than written guides.

To clarify, I am not claiming that all videos are useless, nor that video is always the wrong medium. However, ease of creation should not be routinely allowed to trump ease of access to information. This is what is fundamentally wrong with a great deal of YouTube information snippets. Good publishing should be made in the medium that is best suited to the content and to the target group, not in the medium that is most convenient for the author.

Not all YouTube videos are useless, and some content is best suited for a voice-over video presentation, but when I search for a guide on how to fix some small configuration problem with my computer and end up with a video guide explaining three simple steps in a blurry and badly narrated video, I can't help but think that just writing those simple steps down in a short list would have been so much easier for all parties.

I disagree, the author should have some say in the medium, after all they are the ones creating the content. I mean, sure there should be consideration of the audience and how they consume, but the authors create the content. If it's more convenient for an author of a guide to a dungeon or explain how to turn on my computer, wouldn't you rather have some medium rather than none?
I think the ease of creation has increased the ease of access. More information is what we need, not less. There needs to be an onus on the consumer to find the information important to them, but that doesn't necessarily mean blurry youtube videos explaining how to turn on your pc shouldn't be out there. And, honestly, to me it is much easier to find a youtube video explaining string theory than to try to find/read a paper on it.

I disagree with the spirit of your disagreement.

An author that is interested in effectively communicating will pick the medium that best conveys this information. This person will then use that medium, understanding the limitations of the medium, to convey the information.

The point that you disagreed with was that some authors pick the medium that is convenient for them. I will add to this that they will also pick the medium that is most beneficial to THEM, in terms of popularity, fame, and reward, rather than the medium that best conveys what it is they are contributing.

Youtube is often the 'answer' and the content creator is grasping for the 'question' that allows them to make the Youtube video. It is hard to get readers to play the author's favorite song too loudly, so I can understand why people don't want to do text.

I spent the better part of a half an hour watching a video posted here in the forum that was meant to convey information. The part of the video that I was interested in was 11 minutes long. I took notes, paused, replayed portions, and even had to look up something on Google because the guy did not enunciate properly. When I was done, I had 10 (ten) lines of notes that described (mostly) what this guy said. He rambled on a bit and I am not certain that he had much in mind before he started.

I will vouch for this, also. Deltia provides fascinating videos, as well as doing write-ups for his material. I consult his website frequently when I'm puzzled as to what abilities might work for certain characters.
And the great thing about Deltia, is that he's accessible and very friendly and helpful. After watching his intro to Cyrodil video, I emailed him and asked if he'd take some in our guild for an intro to Cyrodil. He agreed and led us on an amazing intro to PVP in Cyrodil, along with his buddy, PartyPyro.
It was a great time, and very instructive!

This game unfortunately does not have challenging enough content to really facilitate the level of theory crafting that some of us remember fondly from World of Warcraft.

The most optimal version of a build is not far enough ahead from an average player's first guess to make optimization matter.

Which is why it is good to showcase actual player skills, tactics, and advice for distinguishing oneself, rather than just a set of instructions to follow to reach X DPS or whatever. Being a competent player matters more in a game where there is more flexibility in roles/duties and choices, and when you also must make informed decisions about what abilities to slot.

I find that to be both a helpful and good suggestion. Especially since the Undaunted Pledges. Hang out in Mournhold long enough and you will undoubtedly see someone complaining of players that need to "learn to play" and because of ESO's promise of play as you want you have a ton of players doing PUG's because they are left out of groups for not having the right build, etc.......So they are in a dungeon and stuck at a boss, one tabs out to hit up google and all you find is videos. Click this website link for a "guide" and its more videos.

I experienced this myself pre-undaunted, I can only imagine its worse now. I also had a player state right out that they don't do videos because it would put them over allotted bandwidth each month. So, if you want more clicks and more people interested cater to all players and not just the type that min/maxes and is happy to sit through a whole dungeon video for information, or build guide, or w/e.
If options weren't necessary, and everyone played the same way, no one would use addons. Fix the UI!

As a Fantasy MMO Gamer for some time now, videos are good for
    1) Boss fights
    2) Instruction on things like Animation canceling, which should be roughly 2 minutes long.

I am a "grandpa," and I have no idea what the allure to sitting there and spending time watching people play video games with time I could spend playing them.

I have no desire to watch other people play this game.

You want to petition for something useful?

Put a dummy to beat on somewhere in game so people can actually learn how to DPS. DPS drives this game and the difficulty of its content.
