It's really unfortunate that with such a huge variety of ways you can build a character, only a few builds are optimal. I'm not sure what the answer is but I really wish ZOS would get to work on it!

Yeah I agree this is the issue in a nutshell... you can play as you want, just suffer the consequences...

I'm the complete opposite, I'm always looking on youtube or the forums for the optimal build. I haven't found it yet but I won't quit searching. Of course just because you have the optimal build you also need player skill, something I'm mediocre at best.

My character... I like to think he's from another land...
The name, the battle style, the armor style, the color dyes, everything I put into building my character places him as not from Nirn.
I had a character that I built some time ago in another MMO. I had a decent amount of popularity inside and outside of my guild. A fast moving rogue who spent his time slinging knives and spells. You couldn't catch him, you couldn't heal faster than his fast paced attacks, and he always had a trick up his sleeve to keep himself alive and full of battle prowess.

I didn't intend for him to hop from one universe to the other, if anything it was a silly moment of having trouble thinking up a name. When building my character I couldn't help but be attracted to my old MMO's character name. No other name would come to me, just his. So he was born once again in Nirn.

He was always meant to be DPS, but he has always had one wish every time he enters a battlefield. "I want to be faster no matter the cost." He doesn't believe in standing still, he scoffs at casting times, and he detests the necessity of blocking. He wants to run, he wants to sling attacks at rapid speed with out a moment of delay, he wants to dodge any major threat headed his way. His lust for speed is unquenchable.

Before I knew it, my old character had completely been reborn into Nirn. He doesn't follow others. He doesn't want to copy what other warriors find ideal or powerful. He has always had only one way of doing things and that's to be faster than anyone or anything else.
He's come a long way from slinging blades at opponents at unspeakable speeds, but he hasn't traveled too far. He's replaced his throwing knives with syphon magic and found comfort in carrying two swords. Magic is familiar to him, and as it did in the past he needs his magic to be as fast as he is.

This character has always been this way, he's had an expansive history in the previous MMO and now he carries it over into a new world he has yet to fully explore. This character knew that his obsession with speed could possibly take him down a painful route of death and failure, but it was the risk he needed to take to live his ideal lifestyle. Although he had a very rough beginning with many hard lessons to learn, he has found that his fixation on speed has paid out hand over hand.

I am not my character, but when I found myself reusing an old name, I unexpectedly found myself reliving an old character/story/ideal that I thought I would never return to again.

    - My character is not a cookie cutter build. It is totally possible that someone is using the exact same build as I do, but I have yet to see it outside of my character or read about it anywhere. In the past, this character was a type of cookie cutter build in the game he came from, but when I began applying the same style to ESO, it was not only uncommon, but the importance of moving fast had a completely different meaning in ESO. I was very worried that my play style was going to peter out in later levels, but as I got into the 30's, things seemed to change for the better. The speed and battle style are familiar to me as they did in the past and I couldn't be happier.

I really don't have a problem with there being ideal builds that the majority of people follow, there will always be some people who want to be the most powerful they can be and that was their intention when they bought the game. Not everyone is trying to replicate themselves in a fantasy world, some people just want a game that they can calculate out how to become the best and then confidently walk into all areas of the game knowing that their character will always be able to handle anything they end up facing. Another thing to consider is the classic "Main Character" set up, a lot of people will build an "ideal" combat character to help get themselves off the ground in the game. This, in most MMO's I've played in the past, is totally common for players who are beginning to play the game with no help from other in game players. It's normal from what I've seen, to build a character that is not your ideal replication of yourself in the game, and to use that character to progress the game, acquire rare items, make some money, and maybe find a competent guild to help you in further game progression. Then once those people have established their main character to do all the hard dirty work, they then have the stage set (rare items, money, friends) to build a character that would actually play to the way they enjoy.

I totally agree with the OP,

Take Kotaro Atani for instance, my main character, he is a swashbuckling Nightblade warrior Khajiit, who doesn't like using magical staffs of any kind.

He has finally reluctantly picked up a Restoration staff because he knows he needs to have more survivability in Cyrodiil but he does not like it, he is a dual wielding, bow shooting, sneaky shadow warrior and his build is built to be a fast sneaky ganker who can attack, kill and then disappear like a ghost. This is who he is and it weighs on me that he just can't be the way he should be. (Maybe with the Spell crafting system Kotaro will no longer need to wield a Restoration staff, we shall see... Healing spells find me...). One thing you will most likely never see is Kotaro using a Destruction staff, it is just not in his nature.

Kotaro is like Zorro (Puss in Boots) in a way, flashy at times and flamboyant, sometimes funny and friendly but can also be very deadly if needed since he is a trained assassin and killing things and people is what he is best at but overall he is a good person and very hero-like.

Now on the other Hand, I have an Argonian Nightblade, named Saliltul, and he is a Restoration staff, all magicka user who wears heavy and light armor and using a Restoration or Destruction staff feels like what he should be doing and does.

Saliltul is a very different person, he is a mean and vengeful mercenary type that twists dark magic and uses it to further the Dominion cause because he was captured and put into slavery by the Dunmers and had to endure many years of hardship and torture at their hands until he finally escaped with the help of some Bosmer scouts and now that his homeland has joined with his previous slavers, via the Ebonheart Pact, it is like a slap in the face to all that he endured, and all the Argonian's he saw slaughtered by the Dunmer, and this has changed Saliltul inside, he has turned his back on his homeland because of the arrogance and stupidity of his people and he has grown darker inside his soul because of it.

Saliltul heals people because he needs to accomplish his goal, not because he wants to or because he likes them, but he knows he needs allies to achieve his goal. Saliltul see's the Dominion as a means to a end, a way to win and maybe get the Ebonheart Pact to disband and finally free his people from the Dark Elven people's control and to extract revenge on the Dark elves that had imprisoned him.

Saliltul is a Anti-Hero, he loves and hates his people at the same time, he doesn't really agree with the Dominion at times but he is willing to use them to further his own ends. Is he evil..maybe a little bit but the one thing he is not is a hero..

I couldn't agree more. I play ESO solely for the RP experience. I love making characters with a story, and I couldn't care less if someone tells me that my "sorcerer" should stick to specific weapons or armor. In my head she is a battlemage, and I will play as I please - I have no need to be "overpowered" and rush through the game.
    Peace out :sunglasses:

I build my character how i want to build them. I don't care if it isn't the most optimal build out there and i'm sure other people have better builds than me, but i think i'm doing pretty well in this game with the build I've got.
