Why is the patch size so big

I only have 1 terabyte and as it is I have to start uninstalling things. Im down to 272 gigs, I have a couple other MMOPs and games on here but even WOW doesn't take up that much space or GW2 which are the other two I play.

Can we get an official response on why you guys cannot figure out how to do patches like a proper MMO? Like I shouldn't be forced to uninstall things just to play.

Bigger game = bigger patches. I mean the game is huge - a big open-world, graphically rich, expansive game. That's part of what makes it awesome. You can't then complain about the size when you enjoy all the perks of said size. Show me a zone in WOW or GW2 as big as Cyrodiil.

Cyrodiil is bigger than whole Eastern Kingdoms (which is like 20 zones)
Othervise 1 ESO zone is about as big as 3 WoW zones.

Though that is not a very fair comparison as WoW zones don't use much textures and are usually very barren. While ESO has a very rich environment.

    Can't comment on GW2 though.

Make sure you're only downloading the patch and not the whole game again. Without any figures it isn't possible to know what exactly you are attributing to the patch.

What puzzles me is why the first half or so of this download happened so quickly. But as soon as it hit about the 70% mark it has slowed to a crawl. 70-71% has taken nearly two hours for me and I am certain nothing else is taking up bandwidth on my network.

I don't care how big a zone is or how "crysis" looking the game gets or is. Your patches, especially for these patch notes, should not be this big. For like update 5 sure that makes sense. But for a incremental patch .... no.

It is a huge incremental patch. I actually hesitate to use the word 'patch' as it means something other than what ZOS appears to use.

A patch replaces stuff with other stuff, a difference listing really. ZOS seems to do this in a clumsy and brutal manner. Brute forcing whole sections rather than replacing what needs to be replaced would be my guess as to why this happens.

    also remember

Fixed an issue where the wrong weapons would display after a weapon swap.
Fixed an issue where the game would freeze or become unresponsive after weapon swapping.

Very well mean the assets for every weapon/armor/animation in the game.

There were a lot of sound issues as well so that may be a re-download of the sound assets.

You can't know what they have to replace to fix the problem, it may not just be some code out of place
Tl;dr really weigh the fun you have in game vs the business practices you are supporting.

its just this size of patch you would expect from a major update, not something where the patch notes barley fit onto a page.

Also why cant zenimax clean up after them selves, my HDD should not be getting full because they decide the patches should be 500 gigs (exaggeration)

    Woohoo! Just hit 72%

By the way, is this the patch of the patch of the update? Or is it the patch of the patch of the patch of the update? So hard to remember these things.

no this is a QQ. Its a valid one too because a patch should not be 12 gigs unless its like an expansion or a majour update

Yep the game is massive (42.2Gigs as of now) but its not the responsible for eating 728Gigs of your hard drive.
Its important to remember that if the patch is not adding new content, its only replacing the files and not using more space.

Also huge games require Huge storage. Storage space is dirt cheap now a days, just get a external HD and move all your stuff there.

That said i would appreciate if they didn't need to replace 25% of the files every time they fixed something.

Now while I sit here waiting I'm curious to know what Koloki's UNFUNNY JOKE was. Hmmmm......

Man this is taking longer than Update 5. Been 4 hours and still have gigs left to download. Anyone gonna start a poll on how many things won't actually be fixed xD?

Seriously hope these are good fixes though and from now on I'm leaving the launcher open on maintenance mornings.

I'm sensing a bit of sarcasm here, I pay on time and in advance for a service I find therapeutic. Today they *** up and delayed my use of the service and will possibly cause me to incur overage charges for bandwidth.

I also find complaining therapeutic, the fact that two people took the time to make a sarcastic "poor you" comment made me feel a little better about what a whiner I am ;)

3 hours and 55% downloading an incremental patch, nice work guys.

This download time is effing silly. I have a great connection and it is over 5 hours? can normally download a gb in 30 minutes

You are spouting this crap everywhere. Stop. You are just dead wrong.

On a side note, we got to download 6-12 gigs (depending on whether you used the "workaround") supposedly to fix sound files... and... lo and behold... we now have a new bug with sound in combat.

Every modem MMO is graphically rich... and expansive. ESO is no bigger than SWTOR is... and their patches have never been this big.

Might have to do with the data types transferred, some file types are heavy compressed like textures, other are not compressed and as the installer compress the stream they will go fast.

As for download size, most patches outside of the 6 week content updates are pretty small. This is large, it might be an update to large files like sounds.
It might be updates to huge files who are not patched but replaced, bug or too many changes in them.
Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.
