I will have to disagree with you on this one. I have seen this so many times I cant even begin to count. Consoles are also why we only have 5 skill slots....there are only so many buttons on a controller. Anyone who has been a gamer for more that 20 yrs has seen a clear progression towards pc games being dumbed down so that they can be ported to console.

Where is it written that the console version has to have the same UI as the PC version or vice versa? And this whole dumbing things down argument goes out the window as todays consoles are X86 machines with dedicated OS's, so there is no reason to make a game different because it will be on that platform, other than the UI. And, that does not need to be the same. At all really.

Morrowind had differences with regards to Quickslots. The console version did not have any QS, but the PC did. No one was screaming for anything. The UI's were similar but the PC was much better with direct access to the specific window you needed and you could resize the windows and place them where you wanted them to be. Actually, I have yet to see a RPG game with a better UI than Morrowind has, PC or Console.

The 5 slots is more of a design choice than anything else. It makes one think about the skills they are going to use for the situation coming up. This game is not WOW and we don't need to have the scads of quickslots and skill keys that game has. But, this aspect is a discussion for another thread.

No one has ever said that this is the way it has to be. Its just the way it is. Why make two games when you can just make one. Its cheaper.

-5 points for the WoW reference.

My point is that the QS Wheel is a design choice, not a platform choice. They do not have to make two games, the UI is just an interface. This key stroke gives this command, clicking on this focus point gives this command, no need to make the underlying game any different.

There are add-on that help by allowing binding to move them to the 'q' position that you use once...

    Pretty much this.

If you're serious about actually being able to use the right potion at the right time, I would suggest checking out Greymind's Quickslot Bar addon.

If you're opposed to addons, well, ZOS built a purposely clunky interface for you because they figured you could fix it w/ addons later if you didn't like it.

This is like talking to one of my kids.

If you cant see how a wheel would be the easiest way for a controller to select a quick slot, then I just don't know what to say. Even the slightest difference in design will cost more money. Its more coding weather you think it is simple or not. It costs more money to write two different codes for the same thing. Therefore just like every other Dev in the world who has a game that is available both on console and PC, they just make it the same on both.

This is like talking to my dad....And I am 51 years old.

I never said it would not be an easier way to choose something with a console controller. I even contemplated adding that to one of my posts. But I did not think I needed to point out the obvious to you.

Since this game is only out on the PC, and that is the platform I am playing on that is all I am talking about. The PC version. That is all I care about and all I will ever care about.

It's a side effect of having an interface built to work with consoles obviously, right now there is nothing we can really do about it.

I'm surprised more people have not complained about this frankly.

You can tell a lot of things in game were made to be console friendly, which is odd considering how many bugs this game has the console version won't pass Sony's or Microsoft's approval process at this point lol

Probably why the release date has been pushed back indefinitely. If I were ZOS, I wouldn't put this on consoles until well after Thieves' Guild / Dark Brotherhood / Justice System / Champion System / Spellcrafting are all not only in the game, but tested thoroughly.

That's what we're paying for the privelege to do for them, I guess.

Are you a no-addons kind of person?

I like addons, just don't use a lot of them.

I meant using the Q slot mechanism that is in the game now. Otherwise, I just open up the inventory (I cue that up to Consumables and try to only have useful potions in there) and just get my potions that way. I can do that quicker than dealing with that wheel thing. I mean hit "I" I click on what I want, hit "I" I again. Not Hold down Q, move the mouse around and try to figure out what is highlighted with all the spell effects that can go off in the thick of things, and get the wrong one selected more often than not process. Heck, I had hard time selecting the bait I wanted back when I was trying out fishing. I got that figured out after a while, but I would prefer using the menus for that too. (can you use the menus to pick the bait? I have never tried)

In fact the only reason I have anything qued up on the Quickslot is, well I do use the Magic potion quite a bit, is that it tells me if the potion cool down is over. This way I don't waste time opening my inventory if I can't use one yet. However I do find myself taking potions when I don't want to if they are qued up. Sometimes I miss the W key when walking and hear the whoosh sound and think crap just took a potion while walking down the road.

I looked into these mods early on and decided they would be just as quick as doing it the way I do it with the menus. I tend to only carry about 5 potions so choosing the one I want from the list is fast for me.

I might try the Grey Mind bar to see how that works. I think I looked at it one time but it might have been out of date or something or maybe it was another one that I saw that was not being developed anymore I forget.

This Quickslot is not necessarily better for consoles. I use a controller, not KB/M and I have multiple issues with the Quickslot. Changing during combat is easier with a mouse, as controller sensitivity makes it hard to select other potions quickly and accurately. The other issue is being stoked in battle and accidentally pressing the D-ring the wrong way, using potions when I don't really need them. Maybe die-hard console users won't have these problems, but I think Qucikslots sucks too.

I love the Alchemy skill in this game. I love all the awesome potions that are available. For me, there's just one problem. The game doesn't stop when I bring up my Q wheel and select the potion I want to use like it did in Skyrim! LOL So basically I'm just stuck putting either a health or a magicka potion in the ready position that shows up on my bar and calling it a day. As a result, I miss out on all those amazing potions the game gives us! Is it just that my reflexes suck? How do the rest of you use the Q wheel?

I seldom use them to be honest, almost never ...

It is as you said very hard to do for non console players, I always play with keyboard and mouse, not with a game pad and its really difficulty to access things that is actually controlled with a stick on gamepad.

That said, I don't know an MMO where using pots is still useful or needed to be honest. Most of these games have an Elixir or Flask system these days, you use these bottles and then they are active for an hour or two. I find that a lot better even though I am used to potting from the old Ultima days but as I said, with a keyboard control and not a gamepad.

Last but not least, I find that Alchemy is pretty dead right now. But I felt the same at Skyrim, its just not doing much and I would like to see better recipes there, like one for creating gold, another to maybe give us a lizard skin for an hour ...

No problem for me using the wheel for potions. Even during a fight i can switch from healing pot to invisible pot to catapult. I have a mouse with several buttons and i have the wheel under my thumb button. The button next to it activates it. (3 buttons at thumb i have)

Somebody always says "no problem for me" but since it requires a long-hold to pop the wheel up just to switch, it's never going to be a streamlined and efficient process, period. At least not without an add-on like greymind, and even then it's way more awkward than such a basic thing should be.

The interface in this game is horrid, plain and simple.

I can see using 2 or 3 addons, but when users report playing with 20 addons or more, this is a game design flaw and affects the playability of the entire game.

The potion wheel is just another chunk of crap in an already crappy interface.

You're definitely not alone!! I find it hard to access the right potion in certain instances of combat so I end up just not using potions at all, unless it's a die or potion case. If I think I can make it without using one, I just tough it out and keep fighting

Let's say you've got a boss or mini-boss and you want to use a potion of spell crit or weapon crit, or conversely a potion of spell resist or something like that... the potion is good for ten seconds. Right after its use, you need to set the Q-wheel for a stack of health potions or magicka potions because you know you're going to need them; by the time you do that, most of those ten seconds have passed and the first potion is wasted. Simultaneously, you're trying to maneuver with WASD and pull your fingers off of those keys to press 1-2-3 or whatever three-fingered salute you've set up, in addition to throwing a Q-key press or an R-key press... and never look down at your keyboard because you've got to know what the mob is doing in order to block, dodge, or move to avoid that uber-fireball-of-going-to-fry-your-ass.

Yeah, the Q-wheel works great... [/sarcasm]

    Stupidest design ever.

I use 4 potions and Q them in left right top and bottom. It can be switched while running and/or fighting so it doesn't need much skill at all. I just hit q point the direction of pot I want and done in less than a second.

Yes the wheel menu is clunky imo. And getting the potion to the Q quick slot on the bottom left of the ability bar is a pain sometimes.

Though this is an old thread, sadly this problem remains and has never been addressed by ZOS. They keep adding amazing potions and I have a Maxxed out Alchemist... and I am utterly unable to usefully access my potions. It's soooo frustrating!
