Framerate Issues

I'm getting lower framerates than what I'd expect after upgrading my gpu from a 770. Running on ultra with shadows on medium, depth of field off and lowest settings on particles. Out in the world I get around 50's but occasionally I see 70-80's which is great. But, in places like daggerfall city and elden root I'm in the 20's. I know these are generally taxing but shoudlnt I expect a little higher than this with my current card? Not having any issues with other games I've tested.

My PC is as follows:

GTX 980 4gb
i7-4770k 3.5GHz
32gb RAM G-Skill 1887
BenQ xl24te Monitor

What driver version are you running? Was it a clean install?

I would expect you to get better FPS on the minimum side in towns.

Yeah my framerate has always dropped a bit when in the main cities. I have a top rig so not sure what I'm doing wrong.

My driver is 344.16. I didn't uninstall any drivers before switching the cards though. Would that cause an issue? I basically just took out the old card, installed new one, then booted up and installed the newest driver. My setting in the nvidia control panel is set to quality. Should I make individual settings for the game itself? Sorry for the dumb questions; I'm still trying to learn when it comes to how this all works.

    Hey there @Wicked_Wolf,

We made a few suggestions in this thread that seemed to help folks with frame rate issues. Could you please take a quick run at those steps and let us know if they help? Thanks for your patience!

Hey Gary, thank you for the response. Running at full screen 1080. I will try the ini changes but could you clarify what these setting changes are and what they will do exactly? I'm fine with the steps on how to do it; I've done it for skyrim many times but I'd like to know what each of these commands are for.

He's running a 980...the guy shouldn't need to reduce graphics settings to make this game give good fps.

Oh that's what those settings do? Yeah turning down quality is a very discouraging solution. I mean ultimately, that sort of defeats the purpose of why I upgraded. Is there anything else I should be trying? If the game is that intensive, that's one thing (although that's a bit surprising) but if I'm doing something wrong, I'd like to try and fix it.

I'm not experiencing any issues in other games. Could there be any tweaks on the control panel or nvidia inspector I can try? Or, am I maybe lacking in the other parts of my PC, like the processor?

Apologies if these questions are dumb; PC gaming is still fairly new to me and I'm learning as much as I can. Building it was cake but all the nuances concerning graphics can be overwhelming.

I made the changes as described in that thread but nothing improved. I am even getting as low as 40 - 50 fps in the world around Grahtwood and 20's in the cities

If you switched your video card but haven't reinstall the driver you should now try that. I don't know if clean install maters but you can do a clean install to see if that's the matter. After you reinstall the driver, right click at you desktop and click the "NVIDIA control panel" then you can tweak your video card settings. There are some explainations below when you point you cursor at an option. You may also try reinstalling DirectX.

I had some issues specific to ESO since the latest Nvidia driver update (344.11). I did a clean install of the drivers which fixed the problem. The problem I had was different, but only affected ESO, so a clean driver install is worth a try if you haven't already done that.
      1. Download driver/installer from Nvida, save it
      2. Uninstall current drivers, restart computer
      3. Run installer for newest drivers (Choose "clean install" option when prompted), restart again

It is server Lag.... pure and simple.... It can't serve out the video, especially in Cyrodiil.

That's just not true at all. I get better FPS than what OP is describing on a less powerful computer. Server lag is a different problem.

Yea it is part of the problem. Not all of it, but it is Server Lag contributing to it.

What I posted in another thread about the same topic is, the fps increased a lot after I updated the Nvidia driver to the latest version.

But what I still notice is, it drops when I'm in a crowded area.
Like the bank in Riften (non vet), it's usually crowded that you can barely see the floor, then the fps is between 15 and 20. When I was in the very same bank at a time where it was completely empty (as odd as it sounds, but it happens^^), the fps was above 50, which is a lot on my end.

I haven't tried Cyrodiil (battles) yet, I hope I finally can get above 4 fps after the driver update, but I doubt it, to be honest. The more players and the more spells are casted, the lower it gets. On my end, this makes it unplayable in Cyrodiil (battles only).

Which server are you on? I'm on NA here.

I agree that server lag might contribute A BIT to this sort of problem, but not to that extent.

For example I get 40-60fps in town depending on how crowded it is, and as low as 30fps in Cyrodiil. Running a GTX770. If you're getting 15-20fps in a bank and less than 10fps in Cyrodiil, something else is up.

      Edit:

I also keep my draw distance at 50% which helps a lot. If you use the Ultra preset it bumps that up to 100% and slows things down. Try Ultra preset, lower draw distance to 50% and leave everything else as it is.

When running the installer of the newest drivers, you will get a "clean install" option. I think you have to choose custom installation, and then the clean install option will appear below the list of components you're choosing to install.

I uninstalled my Nvidia Display driver from the Control Panel as well, but I don't know if that's necessary. A clean install via the Nvidia installer should uninstall and reinstall everything for you.

Appreciate the tips everyone. Will try the clean install when I get home. Hopefully that will help.

One thing I noticed in the in game settings that's unrelated but strange. My resolution setting is always blank. Now i know it's 1080 because when I select it, nothing changes. But, I always found that strange. Anyone else have that?

The nvidia driver from nvidia.com has a clean isntall option.

If that doesnt do the job there are 'driver cleaner' apps to be found that will clear all the files and registry entries truly making it a clean install.

When changing type/generation of graphics card it is generally a good idea to do a clean install. The silicon in the GPU is different and needs different code/parts of the driver to work its best and the clean install makes sure youa re using code optimized for an earlier generation.

Nvidia is also really good about getting optimized drivers out within a month or two of a new card hitting the market that, in the past, have provided boosts of 40% or more the speed.

Lets hope one is coming soon for the 900 series.

      Hey there @Wicked_Wolf,

The suggestions in the other thread do not edit your graphic performance, but make changes to the way your computer interacts with the game. We see your performance remains the same though, so let's try something else!

Some excellent suggestions have been made in this thread regarding a clean installation of the drivers for your video card. We didn't see a guide on Nvidia's website, but the process is pretty simple. Once you download your drivers, run the file and accept the license agreement. In this "Options" step, select Custom (Advanced) and then choose Next.

Beneath the options for the installed software, there is a checkbox to perform a clean installation. Make sure this is checked, then select Next. Screenshot included here
