Heavy GPU load after Update 4

Hello,

I've browsed and search the forum but haven't found a specific thread for my issue.
What I wish to know is if someone else also is experiencing this.

Since Update 4 my GPU fan is going bonkers... It winds up-and-down and the GPU core temperature reaches 85C. I know it's not a serious temperature, but it hasn't gone above 80C anytime earlier.

Performance (such as fps, details, resolution etc) is not affected.

I've tried playing other games (Watch Dogs, Wolfenstein) and the fan keeps calm.

Chassis has been opened and dust has been checked for (none found).

Two screenshots from GPU-Z are included #1 (left) shows the info while playing ESO, and #2 (right) shows the info while playing Watch Dogs.

Perfcap reason = power...maybe your PSU is failing and overheating?
  • DuelWieldingCheesyPoofs
Well mines not that bad but i have noticed my going nuts when playing this game, mainly cities and around rifts ect.

its not even a year old and a decent gaming pc, other games are fine and it was fine before i think 1.3

but i dnt bother questioning anymore i guess they will fix it when ever lol

@babylon PSU as in the main Power Supply Unit of my computer? That shouldn't be it, I think. Because when I play Watch Dogs for example, the Power Consumption is (on the screenshot) 45-47%, but in ESO it's a staggering 100-107%.

The computer was bought in April this year, but of course tt could be damage from the factory as well. The odd thing is, however, that ESO is the only game (tried total 5) that creates this issue.

@inspiral1 yeah, mine is bought just 5 months ago as well. Something did happen to my game around Update 3 as well. The textures stopped to render as they are supposed to. But this issue is a new one and has appeared after Update 4.

Just seems weird that your GPU is hitting max power...is it overclocked?

Prior to this patch I could run two instances of the game at the same time and each instance was flawless. After the patch, one instance will run well, but not flawlessly.

The difference between two instances before and after the patch is so stark that it may help ESO track whatever 1.4 messed up.

i have the issues with gfx rendering too.

@Babylon Nope, nothing out of the ordinary. Haven't tweaked anything. The strange thing is that very heavy games (such as Watch Dogs) only cranks the voltage up to about 40% or so.

Ok! An important update regarding the issue:
I tried all different kind of in-game gfx settings and found that turning on V-Sync (had it off, never had any real problem with tearing) did solve the matter.

I have no idea how that would affect my GPU temperature. Only god knows... And only god knows if god knows... :p

@inspiral1 is the issue regarding gfx rendering the one where, when you approach a NPC real close it first render it in Low, then High, and the directly snaps back to Low and stays there? In that case there's a temporary solution you can try (if you not already have).

Turning settings down is going to reduce load on the card and that will lower the temperatures.

Yes, but no setting apart from V-Sync has been changed and yet, it lowered the temperature of my card with 10-15C. Feels not right, but my hardware skills are quite limited.

You might want to look into the airflow in your case too.

All good as well. Nothing blocking and all has been thoroughly cleaned

Thanks for all the input @babylon ! Always nice to get proper replies on forums. Doesn't happen too often nowadays :)

    80~85C is normal for GPUs.

nice Il try turning on vsync

yes those texture effects, i solved by editing the default but i still get it on building, low res then pops to high res, specially keeps.

Depends on the GPU but that's a little hot, mine runs at 65DegC at load. And a good case (and fans) helps with airflow.

Yeah, it is about 10-15 degrees above my average temperature at (heavy) load.

80-85 is still 11-16 degrees below the max operating temperature. But no other game come close to this temperature, and before Update 4 - not ESO either.

@inspiral1‌ yep, that's the 'solution' I was thinking of as well. I also tried to change that value back to 0 (thinking that it might be the reason), but it didn't affect anything except rendering all NPC's at Low. I've read on ESO forums that others have it on buildings (and even plants), but for me it only affects NPCs, and started sometime around Update 3.

@mikaelvinrothb16_ESO‌, for me ESO has a maxes at 100 frames per second regardless of vsync setting. Assuming you have a 60 Hz monitor then without vsync it likely was pushing towards 100 FPS, but with vsync it will stop at 60. So that likely explains why the temps drop with vsync enabled. Now, if you have a 120 or 144 Hz monitor then none of this applies. I have a 120 Hz monitor and with or without vsync I never get more than 100 FPS.

I have noticed that ESO will push the power above 100% for my GTX 780Ti at times, especially in areas that are either solo instanced or with very low populations. The Harborage is a very good place to see how hard the game will push your GPU. Without vsync that area pushes the card hotter than most other areas. My card will get hot there when it is pushing 100 FPS.

I would not worry about it and I would suggest sticking with vsync enabled if you have a 60 Hz monitor.

Thanks! I'll visit Harborage and see how different settings might affect the GPU load.
