Why do respecs need to cost an arm and a leg?

What the hell else are you spending money on? Good god, the things people complain about....what, it should be free? You should be able to change daily? Hourly? Why? Where's the challenge to build your character step by step? Get over the entitlement and play the frakking game.

I have no idea what I am spending the gold on, but I never seem to have any. I make my armour so I don't repair it. I suppose that might be why I don't have the GPz, because I spend a lot of time finding mats for the new armour rather than making cash questing :). Of course it might also be the limited gaming time I have :). I know where most of my cash tends to go as a lump sum though, it gets used to buy more storage, so I guess that's the answer ;)

Add me to the group of people who don't understand why respeccing costs so much. ESPECIALLY in this game. You can build a character in some pretty exotic ways but knowing that if you end up not liking the result you'll have to spend a ton of gold to try out your next idea really stifles creativity and experimentation. Which absolutely results in cookie-cutter builds. Having to attain a ton of gold in order to respec does NOT give me a sense of accomplishment, it is merely a barrier that keeps me from exploring one of the most interesting aspects of this game.

This ^^ You shouldn't be punished for experimenting and trying new things.

Not everything needs to be in blinding snow uphill both ways. It's a skill respec for christ's sake.

There is absolutely no economy in this game. You can spend hours farming for short gains, get lucky and find a rare motif, or spend months researching to sell traits, but in the end, there is nothing to really buy outside bank space, bag space, and save for the next mount. Everything else you can do on your own or find with enough patience. So spending a little bit on a re-spec at least offers some form of a gold drain.

I keep reading in this thread about how most people just build the most popular build because it costs too much to experiment. I think a lot of people build the most popular build because they think that's the build they'll be most powerful with.

And I think a lot of us make more interesting choices: we build whatever we want to roleplay even if it's not the most powerful build. I know I build my char that way, and make some choices for survivability and others solely for the pleasure of a certain type of combat.

I enjoyed having to agonize over what skill to spend points on as I leveled, what skills to pick now, which put off until later. It made my choices more meaningful. It made them interesting. It added a lot to the game.

Now that my character is mature and I accumulate gold at a reasonable rate, I'm still glad I can't just respec at no cost. it would just make the game too easy for me, and it would be boring to me.

Its actually fine. You can have over 300 skill points. How about you go get those instead of respect all the time? Ive done it numerous times when it was WAY more expensive. Its in a good spot now.

Actually....why not? I'm trying to figure out the logic behind trying to KEEP people FROM respeccing. Why does ZoS care if you respec? What does doing so hurt? Will too many people respeccing all at once crash the server? Seriously, what's the rationale? I'm personally not one of those people who wants to respec 20 times a week but even if I were....I'm trying to figure out how is that a bad thing?

I figure ZOS figures the game will keep your interest longer if your choices are more significant, including making your spec more significant by making it not free to change. Nothing controversial in them thinking that, even if not all folks agree with it.

I also want to add this: think about in the Lvl 1-50 part of the game how important your spec choices are as you level your character and have to choose what to spend your latest skill point on, particularly in the early levels: those are significant and interesting choices, like they are intended to be, and add a lot of interest to the game, I think. Yet some folks could say, "Why don't you just let us have all those skill points from the start, let us get our char the way we want it right away?" This seems like a kind of related attitude to the one that says, "Let respecs be free, what's the big deal?" The deal in both cases is that you are less invested in your character, and common thought says the less you are invested the sooner you'll lose interest.

Wow, calm down. No need to get your jimmies in a rustle.
Makes thread because of rustled jimmies, proceeds to tell people not to get their jimmies rustled.

Maybe the problem is you, and not the price of respecs?

You can change your character and style of play any time by dropping different skills onto your skill bar.
The respec is to completely unlearn things. Isn't that a bit counterintuitive? I mean, I respect too, but it isn't something you should be able to do every hour. Respecing is like going back to college so you can change your job.

Yeah, i agree. Look, the price of re-spec is a part of providing challenge and sense of accomplishment in the game. I get that not everybody wants the same level of challenge, or that some people don't want any challenge at all. I just don't like a game that has no challenge or reward. i think the respec price is just right: not too expensive to accomplish, not so cheap that my character build has little sense of accomplishment.

How does being *** for respec make the game challenging?

    No kidding hey.

go boot up a 1999 copy of Everquest and play that for 6 months where you're only level 23 out of 50 and some sunday afternoons are spent recovering your body (i.e. all your equipment) from the basement of a haunted house...netting a cool -23% of a level...oh actually you lost a level down to 22. And you're human so at night your monitor is pitch black
