Having issues with blocking

I'm practicing in being a tank in pve and I noticed there are a couple of issues with blocking. Haven't really seen any answers on the interwebs so hoping someone here can shed a light.
Firstly my block is getting cancelled randomly. I'm not out of stamina, or let go of the block button or anything but I get hit and I see my shield getting reset, at which point I have to reapply block. I say this is random because other times I'm holding block against the boss and the shield holds until my stamina runs out.
The second issue is I read somewhere that you can cast instant spells while blocking. Whenever i cast dragon's blood the block gets cancelled but dragons blood is an instant spell. Incidentally this also happens for other spells like obsidian shield or immovable. So my question is, is it working as intended or is it some kind of glitch or am I just being stupid?
If it makes a difference I'm using a MacBook with a touch pad.
I'm interested if anyone has experienced something similar and an answer to either of those would be much appreciated.

Touchpad. Never would have thought of playing this game with that, seeing as the mouse left and right click are the primary attack and defend. That maybe why your block resets on itself if the touchpad doesn't like being held down. How does it register interrupts when hitting both buttons? Other keyboard keys may have the same problem, whereas a mouse or game controller wouldn't.

Ok thanks I think you're right about the touchpad being the culprit. I will connect a mouse and see how it goes.
