What’s in a name

    Hm, looking up languages in the lore is usually the way I go. Ta'agra is usually my inspiration. My last name may be taken directly from the language with a few minor spelling differentiations.

    But my main rule: always try to be unique. I typically don't use any comprehensible words at all. Louresheon, Xeao, Oriqu, Quisal etc. Anything relatively exotic to my ears will fit me just fine.

    But if you find yourself unable to think of anything, I use behindthename.com to help me out.

    I like greek mythology, so i normally base my character's name on greek mythological figures.

    few examples...
    tank characters : Ares/Athena
    archers/hunters : Artemis
    mage/sorcerer : Zeus/Erebus

    if I find class that fits the name, I use it.

    I try to avoid plagiarizing other sources for names. No characters from books or movies or other games for me.

    I had a Drow character that I used a name generator for, and she's been in several MMO's now.
    I did some research into Hawaiian names and thus my Redguard Templar got her name.
    My Bosmer was a villain using the Latin for "without light". It got shortened into Levi....and I've kept her around as well through several games.
    I am not spending a single penny on the game until changes are made to the game that I want to see.
    1) Remove having to be in a guild to sell items to other players at a kiosk.
    2) Cosmetic modding for armor and clothing.
    3) Difficulty slider.
    4) Fully customizable player housing that isn't tied to anything in the game other than having the correct resources and enough gold to build. Don't tie it to PvP, guild membership, or anything at all. Oh, make it instanced so as not to take up world map space, too. Zeni screwed this one up already.
    Any /one/ of these things implemented would get me spending again, maybe even subbing.

    Most of mine I've named after my D&D characters. I say most, because there are a couple I named after downing a few meads too many...and well... yeah, they sounded funny at the time! :P

    I came up with "Karnus" playing Quake 1 in the mid 90's and have used as my main in every game (that requires a character name) that I've played since. I just liked the sound and meaning of the word "Carnage" but felt I should use something a bit more unique.

    I tend to make up new names for every new MMO. While I don't RP regularly, I do try to stay in the general feel of the game.

    I've been getting name snobbby recently and turning down groups from Deathboy4000, all the Drizzit, Gandalfs, etc. and Bobstank types.

    For some rreason I find myself uninterested in spending any time with Underpants Q SlappaElf and Harry Dresden.

    I remember when I started in April every now and then seeing a group of 3 or 4 with strange names like sdfjjfassd, fdfgfdf, hjkjfgfdsf, yut43uuriu etc. They were all templars and I saw them a lot in single player dungeons killing everything and very fast. I always wondered what was the meaning of those mysterious names, were they some kind of family guild, probably some secret tribe or clan mastering templar class.. I never found out and I haven't seen them for a while, probably unsubbed, maybe they weren't happy with the class..

    My main Wenxue has been my ES character since Daggerfall. I picked the word out of a Chinese dictionary. Means something like writer.

    Rosiebelle and Hodorf are named after two of my many LOTRO characters. Rosiebelle's name was designed to be as fluffy and girlie as possible as she is a female dwarf (now an orc for added mischief) and Hodorf is a word play on Hodor/Dwarf.

    Azizom is named for a Farsi word meaning dearest/beloved that is part of the refrain in a song l like.

    Skybright is named after a character in my favourite book.

    Nommie my wood elf was supposed to be called Bitey but that was taken.

    Luckee is my black Khajiit and will someday be a member of the Dark Brotherhood.

    yea I didn't try to pick up the whole name until way later, and someone has it, I just wanted it as Habasi. I'm hoping it is sitting reserved on an unplayed alt, so there is no sugar-lips habasi and I am the only habasi.

    I have used one name since I started gaming when Asherons Call 2 came out - Shadow Shinto.

    Also have an Argonian named Shadowscale Sithis for obvious reasons lol.

    Have an up and coming Sorc -- not sure if dw or staff yet level 20 named -- Lux in Umbram Latin for Light in the Shadows.

    But usually just throw something that is able to go through haha.

    Oh yea one more and Orc DK named "Me Grimlock"

    I mostly try to give at least some thought to the names I use in gaming. I'm not always too successful though!

    I have, somewhere on file, (or had) two translation dictionaries that I have used before. The one dictionary is a list of ancient Norse words translated to English. The other is old[e] Saxon to English. Both are very old documents converted to pdf. There are many resources for such translation online.

    Further to those dictionaries, I would occassionally use English to Latin translators (my skills in Latin are not up to much).

    Most often when using any sort of translations, I would try to find a name that actually had a link to the character and / or was amusing.

    So far, in ESO, I have not really been too inventive in naming and have these I mainly use;

    (NB) Myfanwy: I picked this name as I think it is a wonderful Welsh name and I really like the Welsh song (in Welsh or English) of the same name, the poem of that name by John Betjeman and the pop song that uses the poem as its lyrics. Myfanwy is my only female character thusfar.

    (SO) Ahnova Spellian: Roughly; Another spell user. It was a slow day as far as imagination goes!

    (DK) Knows No Fear: Argonian - what else? He rides a mount called Carries No Hero! Doh!

    Candidates for deletion as I rarely use them;

    Ghree'boh (Khajiit): I used this name as a bit of a 'tip of the hat' to my favourite author but later found that this particular spelling could have what some would regard as somewhat negative conotations. :(

    Brewen Muchale: Get it? Brewen is a badly spelled form of the Old English 'breowan' which, in modern language, is 'brewer' (of alcohol) or could be used as 'brewing'. The second name is 'much' and 'ale' and has nothing to do with any other meaning from any dictionary (urban or not)!

    Mieeta Aklet: This one takes some imagination but refers to a (somewhat tenuous) translation or reference to the actual name of a place I know well. There are no prizes for anyone that can work out the place name and I will not verify, confirm or deny any guesses! ;)

    Finally, I have a temporary character that will almost certainly be deleted and has a name that was used as I was thinking about a certain movie as I just happened to be making the character;

    Erik The Nord (Nord): Yeah! I know! (Dons flame proof suit and hides away!)

    Its good to see that so many people do actually put some thought into the names given to characters they use in games. It matters little that the name used is made up from a favourite work such as a song or poem, a name made from that of a story character is good and names taken from history, society or ancient tongues all have merit. Names based on the lore of the given game are usually fantastic but, somewhat sadly, not all of us know enough about said lore to make good names based on such.
