What’s in a name

The names I use in all my gaming are based upon the phonetic spelling of Native American languages. I do this because it interests me and the rate that some Native American languages are dying out is alarming. That number is approaching 100 with tribes like Iowa, Wyandotte, and Natchez having no one speaking the language today.

In “Dances with Wolves” the Native American actors did not know the Lakota language and had to be taught it by Tantoo Cardinal who played Black Shawl, Kicking Bird’s wife.

All this information is a little busy I agree, but to me the Native American culture is rich and a joy to study. Their languages are the same to me. My favorites are Cherokee, Lakota, and Blackfoot.

So needless to say all my ESO characters have Native American monikers. I have two accounts:

Cherokee:
  • Wesa = cat
  • Wahya = wolf
  • Osdi = bear
  • As Gaya Dihi = man killer

Lakota:
  • Wakan = Mysterious
  • Misu = Little Brother
  • Lila Wi = Beautiful Lady
  • Ista Itan = Proud eyes
  • Wiconi Washte = good life
  • Cante Tinza = brave heart
  • Aiyiana=eternal bloom

Blackfoot:
Amani = teller of truth

What is your naming philosophy?

I normally do the same thing.
Anything appropriate to race and lore, but the occasional funny name does get slipped in there sometimes in a moment of, normally beer related, weakness (my stealth based Argonian Nightblade Farts-Like-Thunder being the one I can instantly think of, he's not really very good at stealth though, for obvious reasons :) )

My main character Circuitica is named after a character I created for the first MMO I ever played. She was a super hero with a power of electricity. In ESO she's not a storm mage, but the name still lives. Somehow the name and the character have become a part of me, an alter ego of some kind.

My other characters are named after plants/flowers (coz I'm crazy about alchemy). The names are in Finnish (not a surprise they were not taken already). Nokkonen (Nettle) is a temperamental little bosmer and Tiikerililja (Tiger lily) is my Khajiit.
That's what a dose of reality does for you. Never touch the stuff myself.

Nokkonen - Bosmer Sorcerer (DC) | Scholar of Storm Magic

Tiikerililja - Khajiit Templar (DC) | Princess of Warm Sands
Tulimir - Khajiit Dragonknight (EP) | Fiery Puss

I have a Dragonknight named Relkin and a Sorceror named Thrembode, from a series of books I like.
I also have a Khajiit named Mwwwrr, because that's the kind of sound a cats should make, and therefore it makes sense (in my head, nowhere else) it's a Khajiit's name.

    I got names from books/series/games...

All of them reserved when the game got launched.

Heh , i always find the name rush funny , even if in ESO many only got in one hour later and so it was easier to grab the names. The early bird catches the worm.

Strangely enough, I prefer to come in later when all the popular names have gone. It tends to make me more creative if I can't choose the easy route.

I use names from books or other sources that seem to fit the character I create. I rarely try for any kind of theme. I started keeping a name book though back when i was playing Etrian Odyssey on the DS. I had to come up with a name every time I created a clan member. I decided to use different nationalities for different jobs and wrote them all down since I hate having a lame name but want to play now not later after I find a good one.

With ESO it is not as hard since we can have spaces and last names. My Nightblade is named Ravyn and I have seen several others but I have a last name, too so it's all right. I don't ever want a joke name or a popular name.
Scura di Notte - Altmer Nightblade (gear)
Lalin del Sombra - Bosmer Sorcerer (alchemy/enchanting)
    Angevin Sarkany - Bosmer Dragonknight
Alkemene Velothi - Dunmer Warden (Morrowind)
Sanna yos'Phalen - Altmer Sorcerer (provisioning)
    Cosima di Mattina -Altmer Sorcerer
    Naria Andrano - Dunmer Templar
Luca della Serata - Redguard Templar

I have a roster of names, variations of which I used for most of my games. Laehl, Azzuria, Brunhilda are pretty standard for me.

Sometimes I try out lore-based names, like my Daggerfall Dunmer who has a decidedly Breton name ( she was raised by Bretons, natcherly ) and my Imperial Sorcerer has a very Roman-esque name.

It all honestly depends on my mood, but very few of my character names break lore unless they're bankers and then anything goes: Paqqrat, Stacks-Things-High, etc.
Brunhilda Icehammer - Nord Dragonknight, 'Smith & Enchantress 'What is 'ranged? I need to hit something!!'
Laehl Direthorn - Bosmer Nightblade, Purveyor of fine Clothes, Bows and Staves
Reeza gra-Zuni - Orc Templar 'War Shaman' and Apothecary
Noemi Snowpaw - Kajiit Dragon Knight - I laugh... or I'd have to kill you.
Kitera Dreamon - Breton of The Dominion: Because those Daggers don't appreciate a great Mage.
Lysara Shadowcroft - Dunmer Bloodmage: This will only hurt a lot.

For me. My main so far in ESO is a Templar called Roseanna. I also have a Breton female mage. She is called Norah Jones, and has a likeness to the singer of the same name. I have a nightblade elf called Adanael, A nord, styled after a character I had in another MMO , called the same. He's Bjalfi. And I also have a male Kajitt. His name is Ra- Jar-Dar. I also have quite a few other potential names for the character spaces I have left. Most notable of those, would be my most decorated character, from another MMO, a man Guardian from Lotro. His name is Ordgaric. Surname? Helmgard. [just created hence the inclusion] And lastly for the pick of names I would include my families surname, only in Tolkiens Dwarf language, which I shall not reveal here as its MY surname and also not in the game yet. :P

My character names are based on my own fictional stories that I been writing for almost 20 years now lol. They become so much a part of me that every game I end up using them and basing what kind of character they will be with their class and play style.

Well i can see you point also.

I just like to have names from characters i like from other places and the fact that sometimes the names attract others who like/know the same things.

I cant stand having similar names really , either i have the exact name or i pass it up. So to me getting them at the start is important.

I always name my first Dunmer after the first Dunmer I created in Morrowind. I had no clue about the whole Dunmeri culture and lore. So I ended up with Delvis Pendrillion. My Breton sorcerer is called Theranis Maudevaire. And I have a Altmer chara who I called Earalinde. I rely heavy on lore like Names.

Tribal cultures are often the most interesting and diverse, in part due to the variety of languages between individual groups.

I have long tried to keep my characters named with relatively appropriate names for their races. My one Khajiit is named with not only Khajiit Prefixes and suffix, but the name of a breed of cat that exists IRL. one of my characters uses dragon naming conventions.

only one bares the Internet moniker i have used since i first miss-spelled "hyperion" when i made a Xbox Live Account on my origonal Xbox.

I named them in this way for RP reasons, even tho i only ever RP on my own out of boredom when waiting for something to happen.
I play every class in every situation. I love them all.
