Lag spikes on EU server

I've experienced frequent lag spikes on the EU server since the move (I'm hardly alone if zone chat is any indication) - any word on why?

Yup, some real big spikes, right around mid-afternoon (CET). I mean, everything STOPS.

    I expect it'll get sorted but..ouch! :P

Kind of ironic...before the move I hardly ever suffered any lag while playing...since the move the lag has been awful..playing last night lag made it unplayable, long lag spikes....abilities not firing when pressed, stuttering movement, weapon swap not happening or taking a few seconds.. etc etc...and yep many people in zone chat having same problems.
Hopefully it'll be better by the time I get on tonight..

Last night(Friday) I had my first experience of serious lag, never had it before. Judging by my Guild Chat I was not the only one, many members just gave up for the night.

However being stubborn I stuck it out and later on it got a lot better........

I'm UK based, have a good internet connection, have just tested my ping to Frankfurt it came back as 23ms........

    Not technically minded.....

    Is that good? :D

Same for me in a couple of Pact Zones I was revisiting. They were soooooo long, I felt sure I would be dead when things started moving again. I'm not sure every one was affected though (it happened to me at one Dolmen and when I came back to game, everyone else was fighting as normal).

    Anyway, it's all good today.

So sick of support I cant be bothered to raise a ticket to get told "Get a new ISP" as that has to be the issue despite the problem not surfacing until after the move to Frankfurt...

(Yes I've even been told to buy a basic keyboard and mouse as that's all the game supports in answer to other issues)

I was one of the lucky ones, even in PvP I hadn't really experienced any latency/lag issues. Certainly none at all in PvE.
Now.. since the day of the move I've had trouble with both PvP and PvE lag !

I suppose your going to explain that away as problems 'my end' also ???

Same here, no problems to speak of prior to the move.. ofc there was the occasional spike, but that's the nature of the beast. But generally none of the issues I had with the game previously were anything to do with lags..

Since the move it's been terrible.. and getting worse it appears.

Ok, for those of you who are interested in a litte bit of background, here's a little bit of background:
    • The ESO client uses TCP connections to the server. Do a netstat while the client is running, look for two connections to hosts in the 159.100.232.* network, with ports in-between 24100 and 24507. You'll see TCP connections on IPv4.
    • Here's an interesting read about multiplayer games using TCP vs. UDP (kudos to @Moonraker). Money quote:
Because that is the reality of TCP – on dropped packets you’ll get huge lags as TCP first needs to detect the missing packet, then resend the packet all while cutting down throughput.
    • Aha, so lag spikes might be caused by dropped packets. But when or where can packets be dropped?
    • Here's another insightful read about router congestion at the peering points between ISPs. It's from a VP at Level 3 Communications, a major global backbone provider, which incidentally operates the data center where the new EU server farm is located (just do a traceroute to the above-mentionend IP addresses and whois the next-to-last hop; it's in the 195.122.154.* or 195.122.155.* network). Money quote:
A port that is on average utilised at 90 percent will be saturated, dropping packets, for several hours a day. We have congested ports saturated to those levels with 12 of our 51 peers. Six of those 12 have a single congested port, and we are both (Level 3 and our peer) in the process of making upgrades – this is business as usual and happens occasionally as traffic swings around the Internet as customers change providers.
(this information is from May 5th, 2014)
    • Ok, so it's network congestion that leads to dropped packets, which in turn lead to lag spikes over TCP connections.
    • So, this means that it's only Level 3's fault? Wrong. Network congestions can crop up anywhere: in the server farm's infrastructure itself, at the routers from/to Level 3's network, at the peering point between Level 3 and your ISP (if they peer directly; otherwise, there may be even more parties involved), even at your router at home (as any household with internet-savvy teenagers can testify).
    • So ZOS is asking you for specific information, including your ISP. This will help them to nail down the locations where lag spikes originate, so the situation can be remedied. There may be several third parties involved, so don't expect wonders overnight.

In closing, I'd like to remind you folks of an episode that happened in 2005. WoW had just started in Europe, and some time after launch, perhaps as customer numbers picked up and traffic increased, the latency in game constantly got worse, especially for Germany-based players. Turned out that Blizzard's ISP, TeliaSonera, and the biggest German end-user ISP (DTAG), were at odds regarding their common peering, i.e. who should pay whom more money. The situation wasn't solved for months, while players, who couldn't do anything at all, were the victims of corporate politics.

Yes, its always on your end.
im just pulling your leg, ive been having lags every now and then since release, especially in cyrodil where getting booted to pw screen has been a daily sort of. Everytime its been brought up "its on your end" have been the standard reply.

[*] Aha, so lag spikes might be caused by dropped packets. But when or where can packets be dropped?

Here is what I have noticed, and I am in NA. I have had some of the same issues frequently lately. Every time it is something on my computer downloading something. From the launcher downloading a PTS update to Windows Update downloading a defender update (happened just as I was getting to Mannimarco in Sancre Tor so I had to run through that place again).

I run my rig under a clean boot all the time, but the few persistent programs/update services that will use the Internet almost always kick me out of the game.

Thing is, all this stuff used to go on before and it was no problem. So, either it's something with a recent windows update or something in the game update, but any time anything else wants to use the Internet, the game gets locked out. If you have IM's or Spotify or web browsers running it could be related.

So, try this, do a clean boot so nothing loads that would use the Internet.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

See if it helps at all. Not saying it will fix network issues, but it might make kick outs happen less frequently.

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

What I've noticed about these lag spikes is everything stops. For example if you're fighting a mob and a spike hits the mob stops attacking too - as if the server is no longer doing anything.

Typically, when you lag in a game, the server keeps chugging along but the data isn't reaching your client. If I lag, in other games, while fighting a mob I'd discover the mob has killed me(or very nearly) once the lag clears - not the case with this lag. The mob stops attacking you too. Very strange. Maybe it's just how this game handles latency issues.

I was getting mixtures of de-syncing and Lag-spikes the last time I played. It was highly disorienting to go somewhere and then all of a sudden be some distance back in addition to being locked in place.

I am getting the same. The whole scene freezes, when it unlocks and the target or even my toon will be displaced a distance then suddenly appear.

I didn't get it the first day on the new server where things were crisp and quick, but it is happening more frequently and for longer durations.

This may simply be load and, as has been said , that for some reason traffic is not getting in and out of the new servers quickly enough.

Shame as an otherwise great execution has now been spoiled
