The Dunmer (aka dark elves) in the elder scrolls series always have had sharp features and a sort of worn, haggard look to them. They are a cursed race, after all, living in a volcanic, harsh world. I don't think 'pretty' was ever really a description applied to them.

Perhaps you're thinking of the Drow, not the Dunmer. Different Dark Elves. Elder Scrolls is it's own universe. Heck, even their 'dwarves' are basically bearded elves.

Ugly is a matter of opinion I suppose. I've seen some ugly NPCs and some half decent ones, ultimately if you create your own Dunmer you can make him / her as sightly as you want. Feel free to read the lore, about the nature of their curse and the harsh lands they live in, it may help explain why they're not as pretty compared to the Bosmer or Altmer.
I personally think the Orsimer are the ugliest elvish race, but eh!

    QFT

Haggard and sharp features are how the male Dunmer are generally described.

That and untrustworthy, thanks to them worshipping Boethia (Tribunal displaced him for the moment, but not forever) they are generally described as trustworthy as a hungry vampire, and extremely cunning to match.

My Dunmer is handsome, it's just a rugged handsome.
My Altmer is also handsome, with his refined looks.
But my Khajiit is handsome beyond words, his fur is beautiful and he has high cheekbones, and makes Brad Pitt/George Clooney/Whoever look pedestrian.

I've always been a bit disappointed with how Bretons looked. Despite being 'half' elf, they don't really look all that elvish. I find the Imperial race slightly more handsome, but that's just me!

they look fine im just sad they still butcher and i mean BUTCHER the dark elf accent. they do not sound like that at ALL. just cuz they deleted the sound files in oblivion and had to quickly redo them with whatever voice actor they could grab at the time doesnt mean they should have kept that "fancy" accent. they are supposed to sound like ghouls off fallout (its eactually the same voice actor as well)

Remember that other TES games takes place after ESO and so one could think that maybe racial features "evolve/devolve" from ESO to what they are in others.
For example I'm sure that few volcanic eruptions or constant ash rain could cause something ;)

EDIT: Remember that basically all mer are from summerset and from there some left to find a new home. Look how woods have refined bosmers or harsh volcanic ash environment dunmers. They keep on evolving :)

My hookup (no pun intended) with ESO is with the pretty female Orcs. Sure, they are nice to look at, but Orsimer are also supposed to be a cursed Elven race. Tusks don't exactly negate a cute baby face with big blue eyes, and the green tint does not hide a perfect complexion. Only male Orcs look brutish.

I think the females of ESO have all been cutesyfied (yes, that's so a word), and I'm not sure I like the fact that I am OK with that.

Vanity is a characteristic of the self absorbed and decadent Altmer. A static, unchanging, stubborn lot from which set apart the Chimer, ancestors to the Dunmer who grew weary of standing still in old ways and archaic thinking. It was these wise mer under the guidance of the prophet Veloth, who himself was guided by Azura, Boethia, and Mephala, that transcended the weaknesses of their pure blood cousins in the holy land of Morrowind. With righteous conviction they overcame even the might of the Dwemer and by the power of Azura were "cursed" in the eyes of the lesser beings of Tamriel. Though by the view of Sotha Sil, a mer that transcended even further than his Dunmer brethren to become a living god, it was a blessing. Blessing or curse it purified the Dunmer of such things as vanity, burning away the impurities of ancient features, leaving behind only the elements of mer which could bare the hardening and forging.

The Altemer may yet say, "my beauty is purest of supreme mer blood."

The Dunmer may say in reply, "my beauty is all that is supreme of mer blood."

Keep your soft features and doe eyes. The Dunmer have use for neither.

I've seen several cute and pretty Dark Elves.
Elves in ESO look FAR better than in Skyrim where no matter what it's nearly impossible to make a good looking Elf.

Bosmer however, are absolutely adorable in ESO.
