While you can't "convert" your currently owned game into a steam key (which no one ever promised would be possible), the only real loss is that you can't purchase the gold edition on steam and apply the DLC it comes with to your existing account.
You could, I assume, login to your existing account after running the game you bought and downloaded from steam. However, the server knows you didn't buy that DLC on your old account, so it won't show you as owning it. It would only show up if you created a new account and applied the steam purchase to it.
This is actually common with MMOs, especially F2P titles. It's the same with Eve Online, and it's the same with games that come with a free month. It's not just on Steam.
This is, of course, and attempt by the company to make more money, but it's not evil. The special deals available through steam (like the current half-price offer) are designed to entice *new* players into the game. As a current player you will have to pay the whatever price or sales they offer all the existing players.
Otherwise, they'd never be able to offer a discounted price on steam, because every existing player would just keep buying up discounted copies of the game and applying the month of play time (or whatever they are offering newbs) onto their existing account.
