Why no cosmetic slots?

In Rift, you could also DYE the armor you used in the cosmetic slot.

As for crafting dying...why? When the some of the best armor in the game is craft only..how would having cosmetic items (especially if regular armor could be used in a cosmetic only slot) impact the crafting in a negative way?

You still have to upgrade gear to actually play the content. I don't get that rationale at all. Perhaps I am missing something?

Yeah people seem to be. What does it matter what motif you use if the way its going to look is going to be up to the wearer and free to change?

ya it would be nice to be able to wear the lvl 1 bosmer armor at vet whatever. this one likes the look of it.

this one would also like a slight change in kahjiit player dialog so that when you do the player talk options it says this one or he or she you know talking in third person.

There is a khajiit speak add-on which I use for my khajiit characters. It's pretty good, as it doesn't affect non-khajiits.

I would love a vanity system as well. but in my experience if is not in game at launch it wont get priority until the game goes f2p since many of the costume pieces end up in the store. (not saying this is going to go f2p any time soon though)

I don't get it either. You still have to craft the functional piece of armor first, secondly you still have to craft the cosmetic piece. Granted you can keep a level one cosmetic piece on forever, but you still have to upgrade the functional piece of armor as you level up.

edit: Ok thinking about it I understand the concern is motifs. If I had a level 1 armor piece in my cosmetic slot I wouldn't care what appearance my functional armor had that I had crafted, thus killing the motif market. I kind of hate the motif market anyhow, I wouldn't miss it in the least. They were grossly overpriced at game launch anyhow. It's also annoying and incredibly immersion breaking to see people auction them in world chat constantly. If the motif market disappeared it wouldn't bother me one bit, and yes I have a Templar that I've invested buying all the motifs for his crafting when they were overpriced.

its a fashion choice. If you can look as you like without cost then the motifs would be worthless and a whole section of the economy would die.

How? You'd still need to craft/buy the pieces to put into a cosmetic slot - exactly like you have to today.

    .

But it wouldn't matter what style you crafted it in. All the motifs, would be worthless. if you can make any piece look like any style you have killed the market in style motifs.

Styles would need to be used for the cosmetic slots - so they'd still be just as needed for that

    Yeah. Once.

You know how much extra gold I earn from crafting because I can craft in all styles? And people have to keep coming back to crafters like me if they want to get that style again. They can't get it once and then apply it to every future piece of armor.

They would needed to make the item in the first place. Your cosmetic skin has to cover something and it wouldn't matter what style that something was because its going to look like your cosmetic skin. Why is this so hard to understand?

I'm baffled how we can be getting new fluff like pets while things like this are still not being worked on? It'd be great if we could at least be told why a cosmetic system isn't in the plans?

Because for many - perhaps even most, cosmetics is part of 'fluff'?

An ability to change hairstyles and colour! (and possibly accessories )

I know what you mean, sometimes a better piece of gear looks worse than what you are already using, but you have to upgrade because that's how you keep ahead of the survivability curve.

They are adding Dyes, and you can craft sets, which help maintain a look. And there is always the option of sinking some tempers into upgrading the existing gear. But sometimes you have to bite your tongue and equip the new piece.

I had to laugh at this because it reminded me of my final battle in Morrowind. In my first run through to the end I did not master enchant or spend the coin to have gear enchanted. I went with what the game gave me to make myself stronger and used it all. I looked like a bag lady. While I could only put good enchantments on exquisite clothes the game could put good enchantments on dreck. I fixed that the next time through because the game allowed me to.

I long for the flexibility of enchanting anything I want with as good as I can get. I loved the mirror in KOA Reckoning. I changed my appearance with my clothes. I am grateful that ESO at least lets me hide the helmet given the trouble I take with my appearance.

Ok I understand that. However many people like to look of different motifs and want to keep a look. So people still would want motifs because if allowed to do like Rift (for example) and put regular armor in cosmetic slots...they would still want the bosmer version of armorX. So motifs would still be needed and wanted as different folks still love the styles of the armor in game already..they just want to wear a few styles as their cosmetic choice. Some people are fine with the look and won't use the cosmetic choice at all.

So I don't see it having a huge impact on the motif issue.

The motif issue is, as @nerevarine1138‌ said, that you would only need to have the desired motif crafted once (assuming you didn't just use some random piece of equipment you found with the desired style). It's not about selling motif books. It's about selling your services as a crafter with that particular style.
Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.

There are lots of thoughts on this, I'm still not convinced personally that it'll have that large an impact on trading. But we've still not heard from ZOS, can we get word on why this isn't going to be worked on guys? Thanks

I don't know to whom you were replying. But as I said in my post right above yours...if...and I suppose only if...they let you use regular in-game armor in the cosmetic slots then I don't think it would have much impact. People will still love certain crafted styles of different motifs and want to use them in the cosmetic slot.

Now if it is only payable costumes then I guess it would have more impact. What would be best is to allow armor in the cosmetic slots and make most costumes craftable and have them listed under different racial motifs that way getting them will still be valuable and the crafters can still sell their work and services.
