Why no cosmetic slots?

So Dulfy has recently transcribed the epic 2 hour Paul Sage interview (full article here: http://dulfy.net/2014/07/12/eso-paul-sage-the-road-ahead-qa-transcript/).

A lot of the content has already been discussed but it has raised a couple of questions for me, one of which is - why the hell aren't we going to get a proper cosmetic system?

Sure we have disguises, which is kind of cosmetic-lite. Single one piece outfits with no room for customisation whatsoever. But why not have a corresponding cosmetic slot for each armor slot? That way if I prefer the visuals of, say, a level 20 Breton helm then I slot that into the space.

We've been asking for this since before launch, and it'd be great if ZOS could give us a full answer as to why it isn't being looked at.

Thanks

I know what you mean, sometimes a better piece of gear looks worse than what you are already using, but you have to upgrade because that's how you keep ahead of the survivability curve.

They are adding Dyes, and you can craft sets, which help maintain a look. And there is always the option of sinking some tempers into upgrading the existing gear. But sometimes you have to bite your tongue and equip the new piece.

Your OP is only two hours old and you're complaining about lack of replies?

Yes, it bothers me, but then ESO lacks many things I want in an MMO, they know people want stuff, they choose what to implement. Posting umpteen threads isn't likely to change their mind, as indeed it shouldn't.

I would also like a separate storage area for pets rather than having to waste my precious bag space on them, same for disguises as well.
So they raised the floor and lowered the ceiling. Except the ceiling has spikes in it now and the floor is also lava.

ya it would be nice to be able to wear the lvl 1 bosmer armor at vet whatever. this one likes the look of it.

this one would also like a slight change in kahjiit player dialog so that when you do the player talk options it says this one or he or she you know talking in third person.

I liked Rift's system. You could equip any kind of armor you could wear in the cosmetic slot as just the appearance. Or you could use their full costumes in the same slots.

Because they don't want crafting to be obsolete.

Currently, you can find every craftable style in the game. If you could cosmetically alter every piece of armor, then there would be no point in crafters collecting motifs, because they could just switch the appearance of their armor at will.

Yeah that would be about perfect. I like the look of some of the lower level stuff. It would also be neat to be able to appear to be wearing heavy armor when you are actually wearing light. The costumes that are ingame look sort of like spandex onesies.

Styles evolve as gear levels though, so this doesn't really solve the problem if I prefer the design of a level 25 piece to the design of a VR12 piece

I'm baffled how we can be getting new fluff like pets while things like this are still not being worked on? It'd be great if we could at least be told why a cosmetic system isn't in the plans?

It's probably a ton of work, and they've decided it's not at the top of the bang-for-the-buck list. Maybe someday.

In the meantime, dyes will help quite a lot.

Rift did it the best way imo. They have 1 slot unlocked to start with and it's expandable to 20 Costume slots that you can stick things on for different looks at the touch of a button. I'd love to see ESO do something with that concept.

YES this bothers me. I'd have MUCH MUCH rather had them put in cosmetic slots instead of dyes. Everquest 2 had a good system with a cosmetic slot for each piece of armor, weapon, shield, etc.

The disguises don't work for me, the text on the crosshairs like you are sneaking takes me out of the immersion real quickly.

Personally think SWTOR did that best... but that system would not fit here.

For ESO I have to agree with the earlier post about motifs.

They give you many options (15ish?) for each rank of armor in light/med/heavy that is solely based on looks provided you have the motif for it.

The inclusion of dyes will be enough for me.

Should give us a Wardrobe for Cosmetic stuff and those green novelty quest rewards you get that do silly stuff like a graphic effect or something.

Also, Fishing Bait should not take up inventory space. Neither should treasure maps. It would be great if they were all tagged as quest items somehow and didn't use any slots.

Furthermore, they should increase stack size to 250 to better facilitate crafters.

They should bring in a wardrobe option with housing. Meaning you would have to change cosmetics through going into your or others homes.

As much as possible should be player constructed, even cosmetic stuff. One of (if not the) best game economies is in EvE online where practically every single on of the hundreds of tradable items come from base materials that are mined by players and developed into more and more complex items. The only thing that is not player made are the training manuals (that I can think of)

The system wouldn't replace crafting, or damage crafting. You'd still need to upgrade gear for the upgraded stats. A cosmetic system simply lets you choose which armor skins you want equipped (a secondary set of slots) alongside your functional gear.

its a fashion choice. If you can look as you like without cost then the motifs would be worthless and a whole section of the economy would die.

How? You'd still need to craft/buy the pieces to put into a cosmetic slot - exactly like you have to today.

I'm not saying without cost, I'm saying separate slots for cosmetics. They still need the items to put in them.

I prefer the Dyes to be honest. Yes I want my armour to look the same, but with dyes I can get a more personalised look, which is more important to me.

That said I would like a way to keep a look on my gear for longer, my Templar is using a disguise at the moment because it is far superior than the look of the armour, but it's not the best look either.

    .

But it wouldn't matter what style you crafted it in. All the motifs, would be worthless. if you can make any piece look like any style you have killed the market in style motifs.

In Rift, you could also DYE the armor you used in the cosmetic slot.

As for crafting dying...why? When the some of the best armor in the game is craft only..how would having cosmetic items (especially if regular armor could be used in a cosmetic only slot) impact the crafting in a negative way?

You still have to upgrade gear to actually play the content. I don't get that rationale at all. Perhaps I am missing something?
