So here is a chance for everyone to play the armchair developer. When this issue gets resolved (if it gets resolved?), we get to see how smart the community is in general. Hopefully ZoS will share the gist of problem when it gets fixed.

Clearly it is server lag, too many people playing at the same time!

When I watch videos of 1-2 FPS it looks to me very much like what would happen if I tried to run the game on CPU only. So I think something is going wrong with the GPU rendering, whether it is a memory leak or driver/coding issue.

I noticed my FPS to go down when several players casted healing springs. I think it's effect has to do something with it, though I have no idea why this drop don't end when the spell effect is gone.

What is interesting so far, is after the first few days, lots of people were calling for a revert of the lighting system, as they were sure that was it. Now 2 weeks later...not a vote yet.

IMO it's the new lighting and parical effects. If I got into my user file and turn off the partical effects totally, it fixes my fps. The only issue is then I can't see anything the is being casted or spells lol

I think it has to do with skills, spells ect that effect more then 6 people. I noticed last night that meat bag siege weapon fired my frames dropped instantly. Somehow it's not clearing it self out of memory or maybe it's stuck in a loop or something. Moving away from the situation doe not improve your FPS once you get hit with the bug, only restarting the game.

I picked the wrong option -_-. I can't seem to find the post atm but some people have found disabling lighting effects completely fixes the FPS issues. Of course this means you can't see any spells, light sources, etc. So not really a viable fix but it does show us it is at least related to the lighting system.

Also as a side note it's definitely not a memory leak. If it was a memory leak then a client restart would be required to fix the issue and a relog wouldn't suffice. Not to mention a memory leak would lead to relatively frequent crashing.

The low FPS are due CPU limits, also known as Draw Calls.

As more people and objects are to be rendered per frame, as more power is required. PC CPU´s are about 10x less powerful in that job than those of Consoles because of the API that is used on PC´s these days.

Therefore anything that exists the maximum of Draw Calls (2-3k on PCs), will cause a lag as our GPU´s simply put need to wait for the CPU´s commands on what to draw.

You can see this very well with objects in the distance, they pop up even at 100 draw distance and how our FPS go downhill if many players are on the screen or you are in towns / in combat.
Another example for this is how the worlds actually look like. Many MMO´s have pretty empty landscapes, no clouds, no weather effects or little things swirling around like insects or loads of NPC´s, non static objects.

I think that the Devs went a bit overhead with the quality of the game, not considering the issue´s it can cause for PC users. The game looks almost too good for an MMO, especially if you consider that they want us to fight 100v100 in open pvp.

There are basically two options to help.

    1. Mantle

If you played Thief or BF4 you will know the benefit of it. We are talking about twice the FPS on Ultra. This however most likely wont be an option for the Devs, I am not in their team but I believe a game must be designed from scratch to support Mantle, its nothing you can just "add" later.

    2. Multi core support

Many players report that their quad core is not fully utilized. Actually the whole rendering happens on one single thread. If they could change this to three threads I am sure we would get a higher FPS, especially those on AMD CPU´s.

ESO isn't alone with these probs however, WS has them too and WOW had them as well for many years until they went triple rendering so to speak. SWTOR still doesn't has it I believe?

It seems to be variable as to the cause. It seems to be one no set culprit.

Here's why I say that. In Daggerfall's bank, if I stare at a blank wall, I get mid 30s, no problem, at the highest resolution. If I look anywhere else, where lighting is in play, it drops. So it would lean towards lighting.

However, yesterday I was in Alik'r. The moment I got near one of those 'dying bug' clouds, my FPS dropped to slideshow quality.

Was it the particulates? Or was the game engine going nuts trying to handle the lighting from the moving particulates...

It is connected to memory leak. If I don't restart my whole computer after a few hours of playing & start toon hopping I have a full crash. Other players in my pvp guild have the same issue. The fps issue only happens while in Cyrodiil during pvp content there. The other night I was at 1 fps when I was leaving Cyrodiil via wayshrine. When I got to Davon's Watch I had 60 fps.
