Randomize Appearance—did you use it?

I tend to put a lot of time and thought into customizing my character's appearance, but truth be told, it's not often that I stop to take a good look at other player's toons (though I have seen some exceptionally nice ones, of course). Which makes me wonder if there's peeps who feel that fiddling with all those sliders isn't worth the time, or for whom appearance isn't so relevant.

So, just out of curiosity—have any of you hit the randomize appearance button and jumped right into the game?

And a related question: How many of you have used a name generator rather than rack your brains for a creation of your own?

Thanks for any comments! :)

I found a randomized one that I liked, made a few tweaks, and was on my way.

I use randomize appearance until I get a face that I like and then tweak everything from there.

I do sometimes use a name generator, but mostly for ideas. I take a name I like and see what ways I can change it to fit the personality of the character I made.

I think the main usage will be as a starting point but then people will tend to fiddle with the result until they get an appearance they like.

I only ever use the randomise feature for character creation in mmorpgs.

I did the same as other folks - randomized for a starting point, then tweaked. But I also occasionally locked things I was happy with and then randomized again before tweaking further.

Only when creating bank alts or spamming character creation to stack mats early on!

I didn't use it but I may as well have, I don't like the look of one of my characters and now I'm stuck with it.

I never randomise, not even for bank ALTs. I might hit random a few times to get a feel for the race, see the different looks but then I start from scratch.

Same thing for names but years of playing tabletop has ensured I have pages of lists of names to use haha

I always pick a race and bulk I like. Everything else just goes in the middle of the slider. The only two games I ever went nuts on the avatar were Star Trek Online and City of Heroes/Villains.

STO has great character creation. Love how wild you can make Aliens. My favorite has arm, legs, torso set as short as they go with head as tall as it will and and finger as long as they will go. Fun watching watching him run, although it actually looks more like he's scurrying around rather than running.

Just to start off then fine tuned. They need a "back" button as my finger would twitch and go past one I really liked!

Normally I randomize until I find something I like then tweak. But I did create one character that was the ugliest person I could make, for kicks.

For my main I knew what I needed as based on a 'real' literary character so I spent some time playing until I was happy with the look, for my alt I used a made up name (using bits of Tolkien's sindarin language... yeah I know...) and again knew roughly what I was looking for... with that one I randomised about 7 times until I got something that looked about right and then customised from there.

I always find that when I use the randomize button I prefer the previous one and then I can never find one similar again making me wish I never randomized it in the first place..

And as for a Name Generator I kinda wish I did use it for some of my characters, at least then I could have a valid excuse for having a terrible name. :D

    Hah, So true!

Yeah, I guess I should've asked if you used "randomize" and then just went with that, but anyway, thanks for all the interesting responses.

So, I did start my Altmer Sorc with "randomize"... but then used the sliders at the end for a bit of personalization. Here is a picture of her at the Silatar Gardens.

Yes, I do have a simple spreadsheet that will randomly generate Ayleid-based names. As an example, my horse Elama ("green strider") was named as such.

i use the randomize feature until i see something that is close to what i want, and then customize from there. Its how I've always done it throughout many games.

Never use it , I really like to detail my own char, plus as far as names, for about 20 yrs of gaming online, I have always been able to come up with a decent name for my char's. Believe me never have I used some of the most childish name's that some have used and have reported more than my share of those that do use them.

No. I try to get the proportions to be as masculine and human-like as possible.

I struggle with the faces. Nords look derpy. Dark Elves are tricky. Breton you can make a reasonable human face with, but it's breton.

All my names come from other games/animes/movies...

Too keep them and have then time to customize my char looks , i did that trick , where i kept 7 names saved and used the last slot to create the char , then i deleted/added the name to the new chars the fastest i could.

Seems i was luck enough to not lose any of them this way , which im glad for since my 8 char name was open for quite sometime for the taking , im glad nobody did :P.

Spent three hours last night making my second non mule character and was still not satisfied. So I deleted him and starting over tonight. I randomize and use the sliders both and it takes me forever to make a name I like.

Now this, this could have been a poll.

To answer your question: No. I spent 5 hours on my main, 2 hours each on my played alts and 30 minutes each on my bank/hireling alts. To be fair, when I got to them I knew the ins and outs of the creator.

I'm very happy with how my characters look.

    I've never used the randomizer.
The characters I've created have been ones I've used in tabletop, so I had a set idea on their looks (and names) from the start.

I was a little disappointed in the men's hairstyles (Lol IMO a lot of them seemed designed for old men? Or maybe I'm just fussy! ) but working with what's available, I'm pretty much happy with how they turned out.

Never. I always start from scratch and know what I want my character to look like. That being said do like to look at some of the randomized ones just for fun.
