Random Fiend Invites?

I don't mind invites from folks who I have grouped with in a group dungeon. But I get the occasional "friend" invite out of the blue. Is there some neferious point behind these?

Possibly either people looking for friends just for the heck of it ---- OR ---- gold spammers/those associated with them. Or who knows maybe they want to see your account name for some malicious reason. I decline those, but now I sit at a maxed out 100 friends so it's no longer an issue for me. It is however, very annoying. It's hard to fix that, but I have seen someone spam it before after I hit decline which leads me to believe it was automatic? Of course they were reported and put on ignore.
